A Disappointment

We were anticipating a great time filled with new information about Chinatown and some good tastings throughout the tour. We made sure to be at our meeting spot inside the lobby of the Financial District Hilton before the assigned tour meeting time of 9:45AM. Shirley Fong-Torres arrived to meet with our guide Herbert. She introduced herself to everyone in our group and chatted with all of us. I came away with a wonderful impression of a perpetually smiling spitfire who loved to laugh and was genuinely interested in what others had to say. Our first tour stop was a gown shop, where Herbert explained some of the traditions of an Asian wedding and how the bride (and to a much lesser extent, the groom) collected gold from the patrons throughout the reception. We were invited to go inside the gown shop and look around, and within 5 minutes we were all to meet across the street at Portsmouth Square. The next stop was a tea shop where the co-owner gave a wonderful, detailed explanation and demonstration on tea leaves, from origins to types to how to properly steep the leaves. The level of intricacy involved in a cup of tea was amazing, and this was the highlight of our tour. We sampled two teas and truly enjoyed the education. At this point, we were feeling a little hungry as we'd not eaten breakfast in anticipation of going on a 10AM food tour and enjoying tour samples. Herbert pointed out a place that featured freshly roasted chicken, duck and squid and we all looked on at the golden brown poultry and squid hanging in the window. We also peeked in to a fortune cookie factory, but didn't really learn anything about its history or the process of making fortune cookies (if you snap a photo inside the factory, it costs $0.50). We were then instructed to go inside two grocers to see how things were displayed and sold. Herbert did not go in with us but simply was a director, telling us where to go and what to see. This was a bit disconcerting as after the great tea demonstration. The rest of the tour consisted of Herbert pointing out a place, saying a little about it (no real history or background) and then telling us to go see it for ourselves. Although this was a food tour, there was no food until the end of the tour (at lunch). The dishes were announced by the server when they were served, but if you didn't catch the name, too bad...there was no explanation of the history or reason behind serving each dish. There was no explanation of how to properly eat each dish, and it ended up being akin to being on a giant blind date with random people who had no idea about the Asian culture and didn't seem to care to learn. The dishes themselves were bland and disappointing. We couldn't wait to leave and were flabbergasted that Shirley had willingly put her name to such a tour. Shirley, we loved you but the Wok Wiz tour needs an overhaul. Next time you're in NYC take the time to do the Foods of NY Chinatown food tour, you'll be amazed.

The tour was so detailed with information about both Chinatown and the chinese culture. It was pouring rain, yet we had the best time. The stores, tea tasting, fortune cookie factory...... and delicious lunch, it was the complete package. Our tour guide was informative, friendly and knowledgable. I would reccommend this tour to anyone who enjoys food and culture.

Lovely Lady as Tour Guide

Having been to Chinatown on prior occasions as a guide for friends, I felt we didn't see as many attractions as we should in the alloted time period. We did learn some things about the culture and that was very interesting and important. The food was delicious.

This was my second time on Wok Wiz. The first time we visited a calligrapher who demonstrated his art. We went into an herbalist shop, and the herbalist showed us many herbs and told us what the traditional medicinal use was. We went into a tea shop and sampled tea. This second time, we had minimal interaction with the merchants. We said "hello" in Chinese to a framer (not a calligrapher) and we said "hello" in Chinese to a jeweler. We did go into a produce shop, but the owner did not talk with us. We were able to observe a funeral parade--an unexpected event--and this was worthwhile. However, , we could not go to the tea shop due to time constraints. It was nice that our tour guide had personal ties to the area (she showed us where she was born). We did not have as much direct contact with "do-ers" versus "sellers" . It was not as rewarding as our first experience. Lunch was fine, yet the other guides do not make up for Shirley and her effervesce

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our Wok Wiz tour including lunch. The tour was informative and well paced. Our guide, Dorothy, was charming and shared much history of Chinatown as well as her experiences growing up in this locale. We highly recommend this activity.

Fun and Informative Tour through Chinatown

My husband and I had a great time on the WokWiz daily tour and recommend it to anyone wanting to explore Chinatown. Our guide, Frank, was great, he gave us the history of the area and told us stories about growing up there and how things have changed. We went through lots of alleys I would not have wandered into otherwise and were shown some of the best parts of Chinatown hidden there including the fortune cookie factory and a famous barber/musician who played for us. We had a nice small group and greatly enjoyed the lunch that followed with a variety of dishes, we left very full! Frank provided us all with maps before we left and he marked out some of the places we went by so we could easily wander back to do some shopping! I must also mention we were late for the tour, being from out of town we had trouble navigating/estimating time on the public transportation, but they did not just leave us, they gave us a courtesy call and let us know where to meet the group so the others were not waiting around and we still got to go on the tour! Frank was so kind about it and we truly enjoyed out time in Chinatown. Thanks Frank and the WizWok Tours!

Highly reccomended SFO Chinatown by an expert

Dorothy Kwock, our knowledgable guide with humor, made it fun and exciting with stories of her family who actually lived there. Stories such as how her sisters who were messengers for the first telephone system had to run through the old neighborhood to get the right person who had a telephone call were very entertaining. Another was how Fong-Torres family was started in Chinatown. We were amazed how spry and lively Dorothy is. She gave full attention to the group and had us participate by sign reading on walls, deciphering Chinese characters etc. And who could forget the dim sum lunch and the explanation of each dish- some of which were new to me. And tasty!! The tea sampling, the Jade shop tour, and the explanation of different vegetables and fruits at the local market were all very educational. For example, the tea tasted much better with the small white glass cups and gradually seeping of the jasmine tea in the tea pot. The explanation of how to saver the the flavor and aroma of the tea before drinking it down, much like wine, made it very enjoyable. Stories of the Freemasons and Mafia, the religious church ceremonies/ incense burning in the daily lives of the current Chinese, the reason for the Hyde street cable cars for the steep hills to make housing on higher ground readily accessible made the tour very entertaining. All in all a most memorable fun tour.

The tour was fun, but I would have liked a bit more factual historical information. I really enjoyed the dim sum at the end of the tour. I also enjoyed the tea shop stop.

A real New Year's Eve Treat
Sun, Jan 25  10:00 AM cknash Male 60-69 Domestic Tourist(s) Family Without Children
Lola was a delight. She guided us through a very crowded New Year' eve in Chinatown. Her explanations helped us all understand what we were seeing. The visit to the tea company was a real treat and well worth the stop. We had others in the group with a small child. Lola took care to include the little one whenever appropriate. Lunch was very good with a nice variety of foods, well prepared and served. I would reccommend this tour to anyone whether a first time visitor or a San Francisco regular.

Great Woz walk with Lola. She was informative, friendly and interesting. I saw parts of Chinatown I had never known about. As a resident of the Bay Area, I have walked through Chinatown for years, never realizing until now that I was walking through history. Lola brought it to life. We visited an herb shop, printing shop, tasted tea, had a Chinese lunch, saw the produce and poultry markets, visited the tiny alleys that are full of history and fascinating little shops. We learned about the history of the Chinese S.F. population from the gold rush era, etc. Altogether a worthwhile tour. Highly recommended.

Enthralled with Chinatown
Sat, Jan 10  10:00 AM rmsets Female 50-59 Domestic Tourist(s) Other
Although I've visited Chinatown many times, Lola enthusiastically spun personal anecdotes that gave me much greater insight into what I was seeing. Hearing how the community has taken care of its members in the past plus how they continue to do so today was inspiring. Stories of the history, the culture and, of course, its food made for a fascinating and enjoyable morning.
