Wonderful time

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our walking tour of Chinatown. Our tour guide was a delightful woman who was extremely knowledgeable about Chinatown. She was very personable and kept everyone engaged. She made the history of Chinatown come to life by talking about her own family and life in Chinatown going back over 70 years ago. We had a great lunch with our tour guide afterwards which gave us more time to ask questions. I highly recommend this tour.

It was my first time in Chinatown with my two friends and we thought the tour was wonderful. Dorothy was our tour guide and she was excellent. She was articulate, fascinating sharing her own life with us and overall made Chinatown come to life.I would take the tour again if she could be our guide.

Great thing to do with out-of-towners

Our day guide, Dorothy Quock, was a delight. She wove a tapestry of her own life mixed with the life of Asian Americans as they came to this country. We walked through Chinatown starting at Portsmouth Square and she spoke of the political changes and the specialties of the area as we walked. She even talked about the influence of African Americans in the area as well as other ethnic groups that settled in the vicinity in the 1800's and early 1900's. Fascinating! She was enthusiastic and alive in her presentations. One of the highlights is the Red Blossom Tea Company and the explanations of the various kinds of tea leaves and our tasting. We stopped at Chinese herbalists, passed the fortune cookie factory, and explored the many alleyways of this area of San Francisco. We find that this Wok Wiz Tour is one of our favorite things to do with out-of -towners and family. I have done the tour now four times and each has been slightly different based on the guide, but all fabulous! The dim sum lunch at Four Seas was out of this world--fresh, tasty and all explained by our host/guide Dorothy. This is a must on anyone's itinerary when visiting San Francisco. Shirley Fong-Torres, the founder and owner, has created a Bay area treasure.

Dim Sum the best part

Tour offered an interesting perspective on Chinatown, but the tour ran long, three plus hours. Tour guide Dorothy offered an personal perspective, but was often repeating her typical liberal San Francisco political views. Lunch was good. The rest of the tour group was a bit stiff.

We had a a great time with Dorothy...she was enthusiatic and passionate about her hertitage... I learned so much about the Chinese culture and Chinatown itself. One thing is for sure, Dorothy should bottle whatever she does to keep so young...I hope I have her energy when I'm her age!! Thanks Wok Wiz!

A Glimpse into Another World

Our tour guide, Emily, grew up in San Francisco's Chinatown in the 1950s. The story of Emily, her family, friends and the "ghosts" of early San Francisco were brought to life by Emily's passionate and beautifully described tour of Chinatown on foot. I could imagine what it would be like to grow up in a crowded urban environment where all family members worked hard for a better life. Thanks to Emily, I see Chinatown not as a series of slightly down-at-the heels restaurants and souvenir shops but as a vibrant pan-Asian community where fresh fish swim in market tanks and tiny fortune cookie factories and musicians can be discovered in alleyways i'd never dream of exploring on my own. If you can, get Emily as your guide, and walk, for a short time, in her shoes.

If you just walk up and down the streets of Chinatown, all you're doing is looking at storefronts. With this tour, you learn some of the history of the community, buildings, and traditions.

Felt like a sales pitch at times

This was a good way to get to know Chinatown -- we strolled through some interesting areas and saw some places that I'd never been to, despite having lived in San Francisco for seven years. The destinations included an excellent tea store, some alleys that passers-by might overlook, and various historical buildings. But the tour also felt like a sales pitch sometimes: we would actually go into certain stores (for example, a framing store) and the tour guide would tell us why we should buy a bunch of stuff. That seemed a little sketchy, but fortunately it only happened a few times.

Thank you so much for the great and informative tour. Now we feel very comfortable going into Chinatown and to go shopping. It was edifying to hear the love of the area expressed, and to see the sites through the eyes of experience. Charming and lovely... A great family memory.

We loved our tour, eating our way through Chinatown in San Francisco with Shirley Fong-Torres! She took us to the yummiest restaurants, ordered great food for us (not "scary" in any way at all), talked about the history of the area and her own very interesting family history as well. I definitely recommend this tour to anyone who loves to eat and wants to learn about Chinatown!

My husband and I enjoyed our tour of Chinatown. Found it to be very interesting. There's so much to do in SF that after 3 hours we really didn't have much time to shop afterwards, but then shopping was not so much of a priority. The lunch was great.
