great tour

Tour was led by Shirley herself, and she was a fount of information. We visited a tea shop, a buddhist temple, saw a parade during the Festival of Flowers, went to Portsmouth Square, heard an old barber play the erhu, and enjoyed a nice dim sum lunch at the conclusion of the tour. The tour went on despite rainfall, so if you're planning to do this one, be sure to pack an umbrella & rain gear.

Unique perspective and great Wok (walk)

This is our second WokWiz tour in two years, but we would consider doing it yet again. The leaders of the tour are people who grew up and live in Chinatown, though they may have lived many other places as well. They are all well versed in the history of the area, but each tour leader brings a special and fascinating expertise depending on their own life experiences. We had Chuck and Dorothy as our two guides, both knowledgeable, humorous, and personable. Each showed us a different side of similar places as they related their families' histories from the last century to the broader perspective of San Francisco's development.

I have lived in San Francisco for nearly 40 years and I learned a lot about Chinatown that I didn't know. If you are a local , recommend it to visiting relatives or better yet take the tour with them.

It was fantastic

Alberta our guide was terrific. Being a native of ChinaTown she had fascinating stories to tell which made the walk or "wok" very enjoyable. Our visit to the Tea shop was very enlightening, we later went back and purchased tea. The lunch was tasty, fun to try some new foods. The time passed much too quickly but felt we had a good understanding of the area at the end of the tour.

Wok Wiz=Great Overview of Chinatown

I thoroughly enjoyed the tour. My tour guide was very knowledgeable and friendly. The dim sum lunch was delicious. We learned about the history of Chinatown and its people. I learned about the different types of foods and ingredients and when it is best to use it. Tea tasting was very informative. I enjoyed the quaint little shops off the beaten path that we were taken too. That is what a tour is all about. I can do typical touristy stuff on my own. This tour is well worth it. I will recommend it to my family and friends.

Better than I had anticipated.

I was very pleased with the tour. Our guide - Dorothy - grew up in Chinatown and covered a lot of the history of the area that I was not aware of. Having a guide with first-hand knowledge of the area was invaluable. It was a joy to see how many people recognized our guide on the street, and stopped over to say hi and she would then introduce us to them. I was a little concerned about the steep hills and walking too much and too far at a time - but it wasn't bad at all. The tour does go uphill, but in a zig-zag fashion, so you don't tackle any hill that is more than a block in length at any time - and usually there was a stop on the tour of that hill. We covered five or six alleys, all with a colorful history to tell. As a tourist not on the walking tour - we would have never seen these places. It seems the alley ways have the shops that local residents use day-to-day and aren't tourist-orientated. (Which was a real plus, you got to see how people do their daily business there.) We enjoyed our tour so much, we went back to Chinatown, on our own, a day later just to find some great food that we passed by during the tour. The tour ended with a dim sum lunch which was a great ending to our morning. One thing that we talked about after the tour - was how interesting it was to have other people on the tour, who were not part of our party. Everyone has their own perspective on things, and different experiences to share. Having the lunch afterwards was a great time for every one to talk and visit with each other and share experiences. With out the tour - we never would have had the chance to visit with other tourists at such length. We would definately take this tour again.

A great morning in Chinatown

Our tour began promptly at 10 as we began our first steps into Chinatown. Our guide, Alberta, was very factual and knowledgeable with the area (as she did grow up on Chinatown). I was very impressed with our visits to the herb, tea, jade and framing shops that we visited. She answered all our questions on the various products and when there was further questions, the shop owners were more than happy to tell her (to be translated). Her recommendation of "taking business cards for later" came in handy, because the next day we did try to find our way back around. We revisited the temple & open air markets with ease of a local. The tour really opened our eyes to the daily life of another culture right in the middle of the city. The grand finalle of lunch certainly satisfied our hunger both nutritionally and culturally. It really was alot of fun and I would highly recommend it for all ages.

It was a rainy day in San Francisco, but that didn't diminsh the enjoyment of our tour. Ms. Fong-Torres obvioulsy knows and loves the area, its people, and its food. Her enthusiasm and expertise was appreciated and enjoyed by all. Take the time for this tour, and you will see things you would have missed on your own.

WokWiz Wonderful!
Thu, Jan 3, 08   10:00 AM ddaprix Female 40-49 Domestic Tourist(s) Family With Children
Our family from New York was visiting San Francisco's Chinatown for the first time. We found the WokWiz tour informative and entertaining. It provided us the opportunity to see Chinatown in a way that a casual tourist might miss. Our knowledgeable tour guide helped us avoid "tourist traps" and introduced us to vendors that we probably would not have found on our own. We particularly enjoyed our visit to the Red Blossom Tea Company, and returned to the shop after the tour to place an order for tea and teaware that we were able to have shipped directly to our home. The dim sum lunch was delicious, and allowed us time to visit with another family on the tour. Lunch also gave us the opportunity to ask our guide more questions about growing up in Chinatown. We highly recommend WokWiz tours!

This was our second time taking this tour. We took our first tour with Shirley 20 years ago. This time Alberta was a tour guide. She was great. The tour was informative, easy paced, kept my 10, 14, and 16 year old interested. Alberta grew up in Chinatown so had many family/local history facts and info to pass along. The lunch was great. More than enough to eat. Would recommend this tour to anyone. You get a real flavor of Chinatown today, and all it's history!

Our Wok Wiz host, Shirley Fong Torres is not only extrememly knowledgeable, but warm, friendly and caring. Shirley delivered a wealth of information that was fact-filled and colorful, and she told great stories that demonstrated her experience and humor. We had an excellent time, and enjoyed every bite of our sumptuous dim sum lunch.

It's a wonderful tour. So much to see and learn. We were able to relax and really enjoy the dim sum lunch. Even my husband, the picky eater, was happy because our guide explained each item and how best to eat and savor it. No one in our group wanted to leave at the end of the tour. We had all become friends and were having a great time!

I loved Shirley and the tour!

I can't say enough good things about Shirley and the tour. Shirley is a hoot and great tour guide. One of the first things she said to us is that she was hungry and couldn't wait to eat. That got my attention and I could tell this was a woman after my own heart. The only comment I would add is that maybe she could allow more time and for photographs. I meet some other tourists and they had also been on the wok Wiz tour and felt the same as I did.
