Great way to see Chinatown!

We had a wonderful time on the tour. Our tour guide, Alberta, was born and raised in Chinatown so she not only knew the area and its history but also was able to share personal stories that made the tour more meaningful. She also had a good sense of humor and was able to engage all of us, including my two grade-school aged kids. In three hours, we got a very thorough overview of the area, with recommendations of which stores to shop in later, a tour of a Taoist temple, a forturne cookie factory and a tea tasting. We loved going through the busy produce and butcher markets on Stockton Street with our guide. She explained what everything was and how it is used. We enjoyed the lunch but would have preferred a more traditional Dim Sum experience instead of a preset menu that was not all dumplings. We felt so comfortable and connected to Chinatown after our tour that we went back the next morning to buy produce!!

Flavor of Chinatown

We enjoyed Alberta, our guide to Chinatown. She shared her experiences growing up in the area and took us to and past places we certainly wouldn't have gone to on our own through alleys and up and down bustling streets. Alberta provided us the flavor of San Francisco's Chinatown, something we enjoyed very much. We ended the tour with a light dim sum lunch in a restaurant packed with the local Chinatown population, always a good sign that the food there is the real thing. She was right about the sweet plums and that one bakery having THE best custard tarts! We'll be able to return to Chinatown with a little more smarts than before. Thank you Alberta and Wok Wiz. We will be recommending this tour to our friends and family.

this tour was underwhelming. more information to be had in a guidebook. lunch was good, but didn't need a tour guide to point out a spring roll. disappointing.

Fun and Informative

We really enjoyed the tour, the food was good and overall it was an excellent value. We both grew up in the Bay Area and we learned a lot on this tour. I especially liked the fact that the tour was given by an older woman who knew her subject and not some cute young person who just repeated a set script. Thanks!

More than we expected

Our tour leader, Bernice, not only showed us the sights of Chinatown, but also gave interesting information on how it was to be raised in Chinatown and explained the different Chinese cultures. Climbing all those stairs to see the Temple was oh, so worth the climb. Bernice made the tour fun and educational. The Dim Sum lunch at The Four Seas Restaurant was delicous and the restaurant itself was beautiful. After the tour, Bernice took the time to take some of us who were interested to a tea shop where we learned the differences in teas and got to taste what those differences were. Our tour companions came from England, Georgia, and Northern California, and it was fun being with such a diverse group. Meeting Shirley Fong-Torres was the highlight of the tour! Thank you so much for an educational and highly enjoyable tour. Jo and Nancy Ventura, California

The Wok Wiz tour was very informative with a knowledgeable guide. To finalize our tour, we had a great "dim sum" lunch and again our guide took care of us. Lots of good food. Our guide was very helpful in suggesting stores for us as we went shopping in Chinatown after our tour.

The Chinatown you won't find on your own!

Although I have been visiting San Francisco's Chinatown for over 40 years, this is the first time I really “saw” it intimately. The Wok Wiz Tour came highly recommended by friends and it did not disappoint. Shirley, the owner, is very hands-on. She answered the phone when I called to add two people to our group. She was on hand to greet us at check-in, and then at the end of the tour, she was there to graciously host our delicious lunch of Dim Sum ….. which included delights that we might not have had the daring to try on our own. Lola, our guide, was charming and engaging. In her narrative, she sprinkled personal anecdotes about her childhood in Chinatown and her traditional Chinese wedding. We learned about many unique Chinese traditions and history, glimpsed life in Chinatown …then and now; visited Chinatown's "living room"; experienced the tranquil of a Chinese Temple; and shared a Chinese waffle from a street vendor. We met a fortune cookie maker as she worked and a second-generation Chinese American who has returned to join the family tea shop, even though he once told his father, “I didn’t go to college so I could help you scoop tea.” Confucious say “young man has eaten words”. We were embraced like family by Shirley and Lola and warmly welcomed by all the Chinatown residents we encountered. It was like walking around town with a favorite aunt who knows everyone. This is a terrific experience, not to be missed on your next trip to San Francisco!

What a terrific experience, Hank was a delight!

What an opportunity to learn and understand different cultures and traditions and have fun doing it! Hank was our guide and the stories and insights he so freely shared, help to bridge both the cultural and generational gaps with my life as a Caucasian, Midwesterner in my 40's. I'd recommend Wok Wiz to anyone. Finally, as a big fan of cooking shows, I was drawn to this tour because of Shirley’s name. I had no idea that she would actually be there at the beginning of the tour and at our lunch. What an honor to share a dim sum lunch with her! The food was so good, and oh, that won ton soup – heaven. What a great day it was!

We thoroughly enjoyed our time on our tour. Our tour guide was the best, very knowledgeable and personable. We had folks in our tour that ranged in age from 8 years old, to 70+ years old and she worked very well to keep the children entertained as well as the keep the pace at one comfortable for the more elderly tour members. We would highly recommend the tour. If anything I would lengthen it! I am sure there is much more to China Town that we didn't see or hear about and would love to know even more about the city! Thank you very much! C

We had a very hard time hearing what the guide had to say, so we missed a lot of things. Bernice's voice just won't carry over the traffic and street noise. The Chineese restaurant that we had lunch in was no better than any local spot in Atlanta. I was shocked. I just don't feel like we really got a sense of what goes on in China town and that my wife and I would have had just as much fun on our own.

The tour was very worthwhile. Our guide was knowledgeable and her personal stories gave you a glimpse into the world of the Chinese people and their customs. The lunch was very good. My husband isn't big on trying other cuisines and he thoroughly enjoyed it. We are glad that we didn't venture into Chinatown on our own first because there was so much we learned that we would not have learned on our own. We picked up business cards along the way which allowed us to return to any of the places we visited and linger longer.

Would never have gained as much insight regarding china town if not for this tour. Loved the guide as well. I would have liked to spend more time in the tea company. Lunch was good and fun!

An interesting look at S.F's China Town....
Sun, May 20, 07   10:00 AM zunino Male 70+ Local Family With Children
We were a family of four adults. The tour and guide gave us an interesting prospective on how Chinatown came into being and has evolved over the years. I think the "famous" narrow alley with the hanging clothes was a prop, and a bit hokey, but what the heck...we're tourists and it did prove a point... However, there was plenty of other, real clothes hanging out of windows all over Chinatown. One of the things that impressed me most was that we were never pressured into purchasing the wares from the stores we were taken into, which hastened things along ... and we also enjoyed their presentations. Overall, it was informative and enjoyable.

Thank you for the great tour of China Town. Our tour guide provided us insight to the daily lives of the Chinese people living in China town that I would have never known trying to do a tour on my own. I loved the fact that the tour guide's parents actually had owned a store in china town so she knew the real in's out's and fact's of the chinese people. The food was interesting, tasteful, but especially the company was entertaining. I would highly recommend this tour to any first timers or to anyone that would like more information on china town. A ++++++.

You cannot beat a tour of such a historic area as Chinatown when your tourguide is an original inhabitant! No need for a memorized script or repeating what others have said before you. Ms Fong knew every facet and aspect of Chinatown. She chose the best places along her route and was able to describe in detail the shops and markets as we went along. The tour-ending lunch at the Four Seas restaurant was excellent. Most visitors simply walk through Chinatown not understanding a thing of what they are seeing. Ms Fong brings the history to life. Without this tour, Chinatown is just a spot on the SF landscape. I would hope that, for the sake of future visitors, Ms Fong is around for many years to come.
