Very informative and entertaning

Our tour guide was a native San Franciscan so she was well aquainted with the local history as well as the culinary high points. Being a native, she was intimately familiar with the local traditions and was able to explain many of the seemingly out-of-place items seen in Chinatown. Great tour!

A new look at Chinatown

Dorothy was our leader and I really enjoyed her soft spoken information, her pace of information given and the entire experience. I have walked through Chinatown many times but hadn't really seen it. The tour enriched and broadened my knowledge. Thanks.

A nice way to spend time in Chinatown

We enjoyed having a guide on our walk thru Chinatown. The guide gave us information on the culture, history, and archetecture that we would not have picked up on our own. We went into shops and a temple that we probably would have passed up had we been on our own. The tour ended at a Chinese resturant where we ate all familiar foods. This is not a power shopping tour- you go back to the places you are interested in shopping at, so leave about 4.5-5 hours if you want to shop after.

Chuck was a great tour guide. We saw much more of Chinatwon that we would have on our own.

Chinese culture and history in San Francisco

I found the tour interesting even though I'd been to Chinatown many times before and previously had seen many of the sites on the tour. Still, the guide explained details about the sites that I didn't know. The guide was full of fun and information. The tour would be even more interesting to anyone who had never been to Chinatown. I would recommend it, although I thought it was a little pricey.

A Don't Miss This Fun Time

We consider ourselves world travelers and knowledgable about other cultures and their food customs. We still learned a few things while having a great time. The group size is small enough to allow for many questions and you cover a lot and eat a lot. You are introduced to some restaurants and foods you would not have found unless you had a guide. We covered breakfast including dim sum, lunch with a wide variety of selections and desserts. Shirley provided much insight into the Chinese community and what keeps it such a vital part of San Francisco today. We were looking for several specific items and we were quickly directed to places to buy them. After shopping on our own, we found the suggested stores also had provided the best buys. We were introduced to a great tea shop while on the tour and we returned there the next day. The shop offers focused tastings which allow you to taste teas based on what characteristics you like. I was very impressed with the whole experience and would take another tour. Shirley works hard to keep everyone in the group involved in the experience and she has a wonderful sense of humor. I'd love to take a cooking class with her.

Had a wonderful tour headed by the owner Shirley Fong-Torres. She is a knowledgeable, vivacious, and friendly individual. I do not think she knows a stranger. She made us feel at home right away. We enjoyed her and the tour immensely and left with some sense of the history of the people who make up Chinatown. She was gracious to all the people on the tour and answered questions easily. We finished up the tour with a fine lunch under Shirley's care. We will not soon forget our Chinatown visit.

Shirley made the entire experience an absolute kick. Without her insight and knowledge of Chinatown, it would been like any other trip to San Francisco and to Chinatown. Very rarely do you instantly, enjoy a complete strangers company, as you do with Shirley Fong -Torres. We are recomending the tour to our friends, and will take visitors to our home here in California, on her tour again. Thank you Shirley, from your "Favorite Pig" Rick 11/19/05

Chinatown under the covers

This tour gives you the REAL Chinatown taught by someone who lives there. The tour gives a quick explanation into 4 areas of Chinatown life - culture, religion, medicine and food. Each is explained as a resident would learn it - from the grassroots rather than in some academic manner. Throughout it all, the history of Chinatown and China itself are used to explain why things are the way that they are. Be prepared to do a fair amount of walking including hills, with a reward of an 8 course Dim Sum lunch at the end. The knowledge that you will gain and the lunch make the walking worth your time.

My wife and I had a wonderful time on the Chinatown tour. Judy, our guide, was very informative and just a pleasure to be with. Chinatown was my favorite part of San Francisco that I saw, the colors, the people, everything was great. We visited a fortune cookie factory, met a local artist who demonstrated Chinese brush painting, visited a temple, a market and so much more leading up to the the Dim Sum lunch which was very good. I would highly recommend anyone visiting San Francisco to do the Wok Wiz Tour or any of Shirley Fong-Torres' tours.

Minimum historical information; horrible food

I have lived in the Bay Area for years and have read a lot of material on the Asian experience in America and the history of Chinatown. And I have eaten at many wonderful restaurants both in San Francisco and the East Bay. My disappointment was enormous as the tour progressed and so little real information was presented. It was cursory at best. But, the most disappointing, unacceptable part of the tour was the food. Chinese Chicken Salad made with yesterday's iceburg lettuce. As my friend from Kansas said, "I make this at home and mine is better!" This was advertised as Dim Sum. When did Chinese Chicken Salad fit into a Dim Sum meal? And then the worse Chow Fun I have ever eaten. These people are definitely off my list. The reason I signed up with them is that I thought they would be able to get us into a good Dim Sum restaurant. Seven Seas is not. Or certainly not with what the Wiz Wok people ordered. Shame on them!

We had a great tour with Chuck, who was very knowledgable and entertaining. He answered all of the questions and told the little stories that few outside of Chinatown would know. Lunch was also very good. Could perhaps provide some hints on parking for those of us driving in fro the east bay. I have and will recommend this tour to others.

Wok Wiz does a great job! Our guide grew up in Chinatown, and had many personal stories to share that enhanced our tour. She was warm, enthusiastic and entertaining. We highly recommend taking a Wok Wiz tour, particularly if this is your first visit to San Francisco. Another handy tip: Bring a chocolate croissant to Mrs. Fong-Torres, and you'll have it made!
