New Bern Colonial Capitol Segway Tour
Frequently Asked QuestionsWhat's a Segway?
The Segway PT is a marvel of science and engineering that can balance on two wheels. Its computer incorporates five gyroscopes, accelerometers, and other sensors. Your body position and terrain are monitored 100 times per second - faster than your brain can think!
How many people can take a tour at one time?
In most cases, we can take up to eight people on a tour. The minimum purchase is two. After that, single or multiple add-ons are available up to eight total.
Who can ride a Segway?
No special knowledge or skills are needed and learning to ride is a very intuitive process, usually accomplished with a few minutes of basic instruction. The design of the Segway requires that the rider weigh between 100 and 260 pounds. Our insurance provider requires that riders be at least 16 years old and if under 18, must be accompanied by a responsible adult, parent or guardian. You should be able to step up a height of 8 inches unassisted and be able to stand for the duration of your tour as you'll be riding the Segway most of the time!
PLEASE NOTE: Learning to ride a Segway isn't difficult but due to the length of the tour, riding a Segway does require reasonable lower body stamina. People who are significantly overweight, have physical limitations related to diabetes, have had significant injury or surgery, or have any other physical impairment such as foot and ankle problems or uneven leg length should not ride.
Will I receive Segway training?
Absolutely. Our expert staff provides hands-on training and guidance before and throughout the tour. Safety is paramount. If you feel uncomfortable or if we feel that you cannot operate the Segway safely, we will exclude you from the tour and refund your money. Every rider is provided a helmet which they are required to wear. Each rider is also provided a wireless earpiece which enables them to hear instructions and tour information without having to stop and huddle. Helmets and earpieces are sanitized after each tour.
Why are Segways allowed on sidewalks but bicycles aren't?
Segways are classified as EAPMD's (Electric Assist Personal Mobility Devices) and are authorized in 48 states to travel anywhere a pedestrian can go. The Segway's wheels are not in tandem like a bicycle and they balance themselves automatically. Bicycles require speed to maintain stable balance whereas a Segway can stand perfectly still, just like a human. Bicycles require a large turning radius whereas a Segway can turn full circle in place. Segways can stroll along at pedestrian speed, wait in line, back up, and are approximately the same width as your shoulders. For these reasons, Segways enjoy their own unique classification. Segways and pedestrians mix extremely well.
Are there rules to follow?
Our tours are carefully designed for maximum fun, education, and safety. When everyone follows these simple rules, the tour is a blast:
Pedestrians have the right-of-way.
Always obey applicable laws and ordinances.
Follow your guide's instructions.
Keep both hands on the grips and refrain from smoking, eating, taking pictures, and talking on cell phones while riding.
Respect others and use proper riding etiquette.
Can I ride if I'm pregnant?
Sorry, but no. Not a good idea.
Tell me more about New Bern.
Founded in 1710, New Bern is the second oldest town in North Carolina and the state's first capitol. New Bern is situated where the Trent and Neuse Rivers meet and abounds with history around every corner. There's lots to experience starting with the Tuscarora Indian War, over 150 historic landmarks, beautiful waterfront marinas, the magnificent Tryon Palace, the birthplace of Pepsi... and so much more!
What should I wear?
Dress comfortably for the weather conditions. Please do not wear open-toed shoes as they pose a safety hazard. You may want to use sun screen.
How fast do we go?
The Segway can go 12 mph. For a tour, this is too fast to see and learn and so we electronically limit the Segway's speed to 9 mph. Most of the time, the tour travels at about 5 mph. Don't worry, you'll feel in wind in your face!
Do I have to sign a waiver?
Yes. Riders under 18 must also have a responsible adult, parent or guardian sign for them.
Should I purchase tickets in advance?
Only a limited number of riders are allowed on a tour. The only way to guarantee your slot is to purchase tickets in advance. Tours do sell out, but if not, we can take walk-ins until all slots are sold.
What if it rains or the weather is nasty?
Tours run rain or shine but don't worry, we provide rain ponchos. However, if the weather poses a safety concern, such as lightning or ice, we will attempt to reschedule your tour. If this cannot be arranged due to schedule issues, we will refund your money.
Do I get a restroom break?
You should be prepared to complete the tour without a restroom stop. We have a restroom in our store where the tour begins and ends. If an urgent need arises during the tour, we will do our best to accommodate you.
Can I shop while on the tour?
Sorry, but no. However, by the time the tour ends, you will have identified cool shops that you may not have known about!
Is admission included to places we see, such as museums?
We will get as close as possible to everything. However, tickets to places that charge admission are not included.
Can I store anything in the Segway while on tour?
Yes. Our Segways are equipped with handlebar bags, which can hold items such as a small camera or purse. No bulky items are allowed and you must accept responsibility for loss or damage.
Can I take pictures?
Yes, but only when stopped. It's very unsafe to try and look through a lens, eat, smoke, talk on the phone, or do anything else that requires you to turn loose of the handle bars.
If I am local, will I still enjoy the tour?
Oh yes. Gliding on a Segway is a unique and fun experience!
Can I book a private Segway tour?

Can I rent a Segway?
