Frequently Asked Questions

How long is your ghost tour?
The Haunted Capitol Hill Walking Ghost Tour is approximately one mile around the Capitol Hill area and lasts approximately one hour and fifteen minutes. We make multiple stops at various haunted locations where our Ghost Host will share with you the haunted tales of the area. We do recommend that you wear comfortable walking shoes and dress for the weather!
How is the Capitol Hill tour different from the Shadows tour?
The tours follow different routes, start from different places and include different stories. Each tour lasts about 75 minutes and the same number of stories are told on each tour. The Capitol tour highlights stories around Capitol Hill which is a somewhat quieter neighborhood at tour time. The Shockoe tour travels through an area with more night-life and more activity. Both tours are exciting and fun.
Is this tour suitable for children?
Yes! The stories on our tours appeal to children and adults. Kids who like ghost stories will enjoy getting up-close to the sites where the stories took place (though we do not enter any buildings).
Do children need to be accompanied by an adult?
Yes, all participants, ages 5 - 13, must be chaperoned by someone age 17 or older. Proof of age may be required. Children under age 5 must be accompanied by an adult.
Do I need to buy tickets in advance?
Advance ticket purchase is highly recommended as tours do sell out. Any remaining tickets not sold 60 minutes prior to each tour are available for walk-in purchase on a space-available basis only.
Can I bring my pet?
Yes, but all pets must be leashed and curbed.
Can we bring cameras or video equipment?
But, of course!!! Unwitting photographers intending to shoot other subjects have taken some of the best ghost photos. Apparitions tend to show up in photos, even when you did not see anything while snapping the picture. The only thing we ask is that if you shoot a great ghost picture and sell it to the tabloids for a million dollars, you'll share some with us - just kidding. So good luck, and good hunting!
Can I smoke during the walking tour?
As we generally stand in a group at each location on the tour, close together, smoking is discouraged. If you would like to smoke, we ask that you stand away from the group and downwind, so it doesn't affect others who may be affected by the smoke. Thanks for your cooperation.
Does the tour happen rain or shine?
Yes, the tour runs in all weather unless we determine that it would be dangerous. If we cancel the tour, participants may reschedule or receive a refund.
Is there a minimum number of "tickets sold" required for the tour to depart?
Yes, we require a minimum of four (4) total paid guests before the tour will go out. If less than 4 guests are signed up 24 hours prior to the tour date/time, we will contact you to reschedule.
If I am running late for the tour, will you wait for me?
We always start the tour on time. If you are running late, please let us know (using the contact info on your e-ticket). Give yourself plenty of time to find parking and get to the tour meeting point 15 minutes early to check-in!
Do we go inside buildings during the tour?
No, your Ghost Host will usually share the stories and legends outside each location along the tour route.
Is tipping acceptable?
Tipping is always acceptable, but not required - it is totally at your discretion. Our guides are highly professional and well-trained to entertain you and all of our guests. Many of our guests appreciate good service and choose to reward it, and the guides are always grateful.
Are Group Discounts available?
Yes, the system will automatically deduct 10% off for groups of 6 - 11 tickets purchased at the same time and 15% off for groups of 12 or more tickets purchased at the same time.
Can I setup a private tour?
Yes, private tours are available for groups of 8 or more on evenings when public tours are not scheduled. However, part of the fun of the tours is interacting with all the other participants who take the public tour. If you are interested in more information on private tours, click on the "Contact this seller" link. We also have a party room available for private events, birthday parties, and special occasions.
What is Haunted Richmond: The Shadows of Shockoe?
This is a book written by Sandi and Scott Bergman, the creators of the Haunts of Richmond tours. Step into the shadows and take a tour of thirteen of Richmond's most haunted sites. Visit Church Hill, home of the famous St. John's Church, and discover the events that led to the tragic tunnel collapse of 1925. Discover the long forgotten Civil War hospitals of Shockoe Bottom, where hundreds of wounded soldiers met their end. Feel the icy chill at the bottom of a staircase where a young apprentice was murdered in cold blood by his jealous master in 1826. These stories and more await as you discover the mysterious tragic and terrifying events of Richmond's dark past. The book may be purchased as an extra along with your tickets, at Barnes and Noble in the Richmond area, at the Poe Museum, or online at www.amazon.com.
Will I read the same stories in the book as I hear on the tour?
The stories in the book in some cases overlap those told on the tour, but in the book, the stories are told in more detail. Also, the tour routes differ from the route published in the book, so you will hear additional stories on the tour that are not in the book.
