A Few Trips This past week were even treated to visitation of the Riso Dolphin, Porpoise and theNorthern Right Whale Dolphin, Blue Whales and the Orca. Sightings Have been very good. Additionally, The Weather has been very nice for the most part. The forecast is always changing as we always hope for the best.
Do you guarantee sightings?
Although we cannot guarantee that we'll see a whale on every trip, we do have a 95% success rate. There is a variety of marine life to be seen and enjoyed.
How long is the trip?
Our trips may vary in length depending upon the time of year and where the whales are located. During the winter and early spring months the trips usually will run 1 1/2 - 2 hours as the whales are closer to shore during the migration. During the summer and fall the trips usually last 2 1/2 - 3 hours as the whales tend to be farther off shore.
What is the best time of the year to see whales?
Anytime. We see different types of whales at different times throughout the year. Every trip is different. No two trips are alike.
Do I have to purchase tickets in advance?
Advance purchase is strongly recommended, and trips often sell out quickly. To maximize your chances of getting the day and time you prefer, please buy your tickets well in advance.
Do the trips leave on time?
Sometimes departures may be delayed up to 30 minutes due to weather, late returns previous trip,or other conditions determined by staff.
Thank You for your patience if this were to happen.
Are children allowed?
Yes! Children between the ages of 2 and 12 can purchase a reduced price Child ticket. Children under that age of 2 can come for free--just make sure to indicate how many young children will be attending with your group when you book your tickets. All children under the age of 6 must wear a life jacket at all times during the trip.
Are dogs allowed?
Yes, we do allow your dog to accompany you as long as the trips are not to full. There are no additional fees. As you know many people may have some fears or allergies. If the trip has quite a few passengers, we ask that you leave your dog with us in the shop. We love taking care of them!
What happens if it rains?
We still go out. The fish and whales are wet. The rain is of no consequence; we are concerned with wind and sea conditions and they are not necessarily bad during the rain. In fact, some of our best conditions can be on a rainy day, so dress appropriately. In the case of severe weather, we may cancel the activity up to an hour before the start time in which case you will be allowed to reschedule tickets (subject to availability) or receive credit for a future event.
Can I bring food and beverages?
Yes, you may bring whatever food and beverages, including beer, you would like to have. However, you may not bring hard alcohol on board. We ask that beverages be in cans or plastic bottles, as glass can be a real hazard aboard a boat.
Can I bring an ice chest?
A small one for your food and beverages. We ask that large ones be left at the dock, so as to not deprive yourself or everyone else of space.
How close do we get to the whales?
Once spotted we must stay back and maintain a respectful distance of a minimum of 100 yards then let the whale do what the whale wants. Sometimes they will be very friendly and approach us at which time the engines are shut down.
Can I touch or swim with the whales?
Unfortunately, no. We are there to observe and learn. Besides, our waters are too cold!
How far out are the whales?
Depends on the whales. We could go out anywhere between 3 and 15 miles as they are moving around constantly. They are either moving right along with the migration or moving about feeding upon the rich nutrients of the Monterey Bay. Over 30 years of experience and knowledge enable us to spot whales if they are in the vicinity.
Are there restrooms on the boat?
Yes, all of our vessels have a clean bathroom for your convenience.
Are the tours fully narrated?
Yes, each trip is narrated by an experienced naturalist.
What should I wear?
Warm layered clothing and rubber soled shoes are best. It is always much cooler on the ocean than on land, so it is better to be over dressed than under dressed. Once you become comfortable you can always peel a layer off.
Will I get seasick?
We sure hope not. Unfortunately, this is not something we can predict. While we can't recommend you take any medications, prevention might be a good idea if you are susceptible to motion sickness.
Are there life jackets on the boat?
Yes, there are life jackets for every adult and child on board. The location of the jackets is clearly posted and verbally announced by the skipper.
Do I have to wear the life jacket?
Adults are not required to wear jackets; however, a child under the age of 6 must wear a jacket at all times. Additionally, we highly recommend that if the Skipper or deckhand has put a jacket on, then you might want get one on real fast!
What type of boat do we go out on?
This is one of our biggest questions. We have two boats: one is 55 feet long and the other is 60 feet long. On the central west coast of California we call them Party Boats. You might know them better as Charter Boats. Both boats have two restrooms, an indoor cabin with seating, and plenty of deck space on which you can walk around or sit.
Are your boats safe?
Absolutely. In addition to modern safety equipment (EPIRB, Life Floats, Life Jackets, etc.) our vessels are constantly maintained and inspected twice a year by the United States Coast Guard, a Division of Homeland Security.
Do I get a discount if I'm a Monterey Bay Aquarium Member?
Yes! When you are purchasing tickets, just enter this promotion code: MBAQ2007. You will receive 10% off of each ticket you buy. You MUST present your Monterey Bay Aquarium Membership Card upon check-in.
Can I bring my dog or other small pet on board the boat?
Yes! We are animal-friendly, but we must warn you that if our boat is filled to capacity, you will be asked to leave your dog at the shop during your trip. Our staff loves animals and will gladly watch your pet while you are on the trip. You can always call before the trip to find out if there is enough room for your dog that day. (A contact phone number will be provided to you upon purchase.)
Can I bring my child's stroller with us on board?
Yes, so long as the boat is not full. In the event that we have reached full capacity, you will be asked to leave the stroller inside our shop during the trip. You can always call before your trip to find out if there is enough room for your child's stroller that day. (A contact phone number will be provided to you upon purchase.)
