Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the one and two hour tours?
Our two hour tour is our most popular Fells Point Historical tour. It maximizes your time on the Segway and by the end you'll be cruising at 12.5 mph! Both tours include sites that will show you the eclectic charm of Fells Point such as the Broadway Market, the set of Homicide: Life on the Street, the romantic neighborhood featured in Sleepless in Seattle, and Baltimore's residences and Inner Harbor. The two hour tour includes all the eclectic charm of the one hour tour, PLUS an extended one-of-a-kind scenic route through Patterson Park past the duck pond, ice-skating rink, and enjoy a breathtaking view from the park's highest peak. All glides include a 10-20 minute training session that is included in the duration of the tour.
What is the difference between the Fells Point and Frederick tours?
City Scoots operates out of two great locations: Fells Point, Baltimore and Historic Frederick (one hour west of Baltimore). On our Fells Point tours you will witness one of the most diverse and eclectic neighborhoods in the state. The Baltimore Ports were, at one time, second to only Ellis Island in the amount of immigrants disembarking to discover their American dream. Each of these diverse cultures has left its mark on this bustling, but quaint town. Our Historic Frederick tours offer a view of a beautiful and enchanting town, surrounded by history. A quieter city than Baltimore, Frederick is a great place to get lost in its charms. Historic Frederick is gorgeous; besides for the beautiful architecture, flowing creek, and trees, the city is also decorated by amazing murals scattered throughout its streets by local artist William Cochran.
Are there any restrictions to riding a Segway?
Yes. All gliders must weigh at least 100 pounds and no more than 260 pounds. All gliders must also be 16 years of age or older and gliders under the age of 18 must have a parent or guardian participate in the tour with them. Unfortunately, the Segway can not operate properly with anyone under 100 pounds or over 260 pounds. For Safety reasons we are unable to take anyone under 16 years of age. All Gliders must be able to balance themselves, have use of their left hand, and be able to step onto the Segway in order to properly maneuver a Segway.
Do I need to sign a waiver?
Yes. We require a signed waiver from each glider. Participants under the age of 18 must have a parent or guardian sign for them and participate in the tour with them.
Do I need to book my tour in advance?
City Scoots glides fill up fast and tickets must be purchased in advance. To maximize your chances of getting the day and time you prefer, please book well in advance. Tickets can only be purchased with a Visa, Mastercard or American Express.
Is riding a Segway difficult?
Riding a Segway is very intuitive and easy to learn. In fact the Segway does 99% of the work for you, as it is self-balancing. Every Glide begins with a 10 to 20 minute training session in order to get you comfortable with this incredible machine. When you feel confidant moving forward, backward, stopping, and turning we begin our tour at a comfortable pace. By the end of the tour, most Gliders are zipping around, completely comfortable on the Segway. Our guides are very sensitive to your needs and will move at your pace.
Are Segways safe?
Segways have been proven to be very safe and reliable when used properly. Each Segway is equipped with a fully redundant system in order to ensure the riders safety. There are numerous time tested safety mechanisms put into the Segways. As a Segway Glider it is important to follow some basic safety rules that your tour guide will review with you. Each Glider will be provided a helmet as well. Segways are intuitive and a joy to ride. By following the few safety guidelines, your Glide will be both thrilling and safe.
What happens if it rains?
We will usually run in light rain and ponchos will be provided for you. However, we may cancel the tour in the event of severe or unsafe weather. If that happens, you'll be able to reschedule or receive credit for a future event.
Can I buy food or drinks along the way? What about souvenirs?
No stops for food, drinking or souvenirs are planned during the tour, however we may stop if the group would like to. Each guest is provided a bottle of water at the start of the tour.
Can I bring a bag or purse with me on my tour?
Because Segways are driven by shifting your weight, cumbersome bags and purses can impede on your gliding ability. Please leave any cumbersome bags and purses locked in your car. You may bring a very limited amount of personal belongings, such as a camera, on the Segway.
Can I take photos along the way?
You're welcome to take photos along the way if you would like, but your guide will also have a digital camera and take photos of your party for you. We then deliver the photos via email after the tour.
How much time will actually be spent on a Segway?
We realize that you are here for a *SEGWAY* glide, and we therefore try to maximize your Segway time. Our glides begin with a 10 to 20 minute training session, where you will be getting comfortable on a Segway. The remainder of your one or two hour Glide will be spent on a Segway.
Are restrooms available?
We suggest that all participants use the restroom BEFORE leaving on the tour. There are restrooms available along the route; however, we don't normally make a scheduled stop.
What should I wear?
Please dress appropriately for the day's weather conditions. We also recommend you wear comfortable shoes, i.e. sneakers.
Do I have to wear a helmet?
It is our policy to require all gliders to wear a helmet. One will be provided to you free of charge.
How does the Segway balance itself?
The Segway is equipped with 5 gyroscopes and 2 tilt sensors. The Segway checks its balance 100 times a second! If one gyroscope were to malfunction, the others will kick in. As long as you follow the safety guidelines and practice common sense you will remain safely balanced on the machine.
What time should I arrive for my Glide?
Please arrive 10 or 15 minutes early to your Glide. This will allow us some time to fill out the proper paperwork, make sure that everyone is there, and get started on time.
When I come for a glide, where should I park?
In Fells Point, there is plenty of free parking on the street next to the launch site.
