---------------------------QUESTIONS ABOUT TICKETS/POLICIES---------------------
Do I have to purchase tickets in advance?
We highly recommend that you purchase tickets in advance, as sails do sell out quickly. To maximize your chances of getting the day that you prefer, please book well in advance!
If the trip is sold out, can I get on a waiting list?
No, Danger Charters does not keep a waiting list for our sails. Sails often sell out, and typically well in advance, so please make sure to purchase your tickets far in advance, especially if you have limited time availability.
What happens if it rains?
Most of our sails will run in all light rain and other moderate weather conditions. In Key West, light rain usually passes over us in just a few minutes! Both of our boats are equipped with awnings that stretch 25 feet in length and will protect you from the elements. In the rare event that we have to cancel a sail due to severe wind or weather, you will have the opportunity to reschedule your tickets or receive credit for a future event.
Are children allowed?
Of course! Danger Charters is family owned and operated. There is a reduced price ticket for children between the ages of 4 and 12, and children 3 years of age and younger are free of charge, but must secure a ticket.
Are pets allowed?
We do allow dogs on our trips as long as they are well behaved!
Is the sail suitable for pregnant women?
Our vessels are very gentle and the waters we explore are calm and protected, so pregnant women should not have any problems. However, women in their third trimester should consult a physician before snorkeling or kayaking.
Do I need to know how to swim?
Absolutely not! Danger Charters carries a wide variety of flotation devices to accommodate all levels and ages of swimmers. Buoyancy Compensator Devices (BCD's), or snorkeling vests, and noodles are available for your use.
What is the difference between the full day trip and the half day trip?
Full day trips are longer then half day trips, and include not only snorkeling and kayaking like the half day trips, but also a stop at a deserted island beach or a shallow sand bar in clear, tropical waters. Full day trips also include a great safari style picnic lunch of curried chicken, tuna, and pasta salads as well as deli meats, cheeses, artisan breads and more that is not available on the half day trips. Both trips include complimentary bottled water, soft drinks, wine and ice cold beer. Our half day trips give you the option to leave in the morning or afternoon, and provide more of an introductory experience to the natural beauty of the Keys. Half day trips also feature fresh fruit and healthy snacks like hummus, crackers, chips and salsa.
-------------------QUESTIONS ABOUT SNORKELING & KAYAKING-----------------
How much time of the tour is spent kayaking and snorkeling?
During the full day trip, you will snorkel for about an hour and fifteen minutes, and kayak for about an hour and a half. You will also kayak up to and spend about a half hour on one of the gorgeous small islands of the Keys. The rest of the trip will be spent sailing aboard our Skipjack schooner admiring the beauty of the Keys and enjoying complimentary food and beverages.
Do I need to have snorkeled before to enjoy this trip?
Definitely not! This trip is suitable for both very experienced snorkelers as well as beginners. First time snorkelers can be assured of one-on-one instruction and assistance.
Do I need to have kayaked before to enjoy this trip?
You should have no worries if you’ve never kayaked before; our kayaks are very stable sea kayaks that novices from ages 6 to 90 and beyond can easily paddle with a few simple instructions from your guide! Depending on their strength and skill, children younger than 6 may paddle, or ride tandem with a parent or older sibling. Our kayak trips are all guided, so you will always be accompanied by a professional.
Can I bring my own snorkeling equipment?
While we have enough fins, regular and prescription strength masks and sanitized snorkels for everyone, please feel free to bring your own gear if you so desire. You may also bring your own wet suit if you'd like!
What are prescription masks?
We carry a variety of prescription masks on board, and our guests almost always find a mask that closely matches their eyeglass prescription. This will increase your visibility and help you get the most out of your experience!
Can I bring my own kayak?
Danger Charters will provide everyone with very safe, stable sea kayaks and paddles from our own fleet. We would ask that you do not bring your own kayak.
Can I have a single kayak?
Although we do have some single kayaks available, we cannot guarantee that you will be able to have a single. Most of our kayaks are doubles; however, if you'd like to kayak in a single, let us know at the start of the trip and we will try to accommodate you.
Will there be a guide snorkeling and kayaking with us?
Yes! Your mates are all expert snorkelers and paddlers, and will be in the water with you at all times. If you are a beginner, you can expect one on one instruction from your guide before getting started.
Can I still come if I don't want to snorkel or kayak?
Absolutely. While most people enjoy snorkeling in the crystal clear water abundant with marine life, others choose instead to simply sun themselves on the boat while taking in the sights and sounds of the backcountry. There is no reduced price for those that would not like to snorkel or kayak, but either way, you'll have a great time sailing with your family, friends, and the Danger crew.
How old should my children be to snorkel? Is there an age limit?
As every child has a different ability level, you should be the final judge on whether or not they participate in the snorkeling portion of this trip. The waters we snorkel in are protected and generally very calm. We have a wide array of flotation devices, masks, and snorkels, and our amazing crew members have taught many a first time snorkeler how to enjoy the beauty of the of corals, sponge gardens, tropical fish, and dramatic marine life featured on our sailing excursions.
How old should my children be to kayak? Is there an age limit?
While our kayaks are very stable sea kayaks that novices can easily paddle with a few simple instructions from your guide, the general guideline is kayak participants should be between 6 and 90 years old. Depending on their strength and skill level, children under 6 may paddle, or they may opt to ride tandem with a parent or older sibling.
What kind of wetsuits do you have available if the water is chilly?
Our wet suits are all 3 millimeter shorties (the water is never cold enough to warrant a full bodied suit), and we carry all different sizes, ranging from children's sizes to XXXL. We have enough wet suits on board for all of our passengers.
Are the waters safe?
The waters we snorkel and kayak in are protected and generally very calm, even on windy days. All of our trips are perfect for children and first time snorkelers and kayak participants.
Will I see sharks in the water?
Probably not, unfortunately. Although they are an incredibly beautiful sight to see, they are extremely rare where we sail. Every so often we may spot a nurse shark or another non threatening species, but most sharks do not prefer the company of humans. Even so, your crew will be observing you the entire time you are in the water snorkeling or kayaking, and will alert you to any potential threats.
----------------------------------WHAT SHOULD I BRING?---------------------------------
Can I bring my own food and beverages on board?
You are welcome to bring your own food and alcoholic or nonalcoholic beverages aboard, but we politely ask that you wait to consume alcohol until after the snorkeling portion of the trip for your safety. Keep in mind that a full safari style picnic lunch will be served on board during the trip, and that complimentary alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages will be available throughout the day.
Can I bring an ice chest or cooler?
You are welcome to bring your own ice chest or cooler, but do keep in mind that we have plenty of ice cold beverages in coolers aboard!
What kind of food will we be having on board?
On the full day excursion you will be served a safari style picnic lunch. The lunch includes an assortment of breads, cheeses, cold cuts, curried chicken salad, tuna salad, vegetarian options tibouli and black bean hummus, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, and egg salad. Lunch will take place around noontime and you are free to eat as much as you'd like!
What kind of beverages are available on board?
Beverages on board include bottled water, clear soft drinks such as ginger ale, fresca, iced tea and lemonade, a variety of beers (usually including Yuengling and Miller Lite), and red wine (merlot and cabernet). Please keep in mind that we ask that you refrain from drinking alcohol until after the snorkeling portion of the trip for your safety.
Do I need to be 21 to drink alcohol?
Yes, if you would like to consume alcohol aboard the boat, you must be 21 and have a valid government issued piece of identification with you. Keep in mind that for safety reasons we kindly ask you to refrain from consuming alcohol until after the snorkeling portion of the trip is concluded.
Should I bring cash?
Everything you need for the trip, other than towels, sunscreen, and sunglasses, is complementary and will be provided to you. If you are interested in purchasing a souvenir, we have cozy cups, a variety of Danger Charters t-shirts, disposable underwater cameras, and even bikini underwear (either "Danger" or "The Prize"). We recommend that you bring around $40 if you are interested in purchasing a souvenir or two.
Should I tip the crew?
Your Danger crew always tries to go above and beyond expectations to provide you with a one-of-a-kind experience. While not required, gratuities are customary and greatly appreciated. Typically, tips are about 15% to 20% of your ticket total.
----------------------------QUESTIONS ABOUT THE BOAT-----------------------------
What boat will we be going on?
Most of the time the full day trip will go out on the Danger's Prize. However, both the Danger's Prize and Danger are beautiful, 65 foot boats designed after traditional 19th century Chesapeake Bay Skipjacks. Due to repairs, private charters, and other factors, it is possible that the Danger may replace the Danger's Prize on the full day trip from time to time. We can assure you that regardless of the boat you take out, you will have an extraordinary time with us.
How far does the boat go out?
On the full day trip, the boat will go out between 8 and 11 miles, depending on wind and weather patterns.
What island will we be visiting?
The particular island that we visit during our full day trip varies, but is usually either Man Key, Woman Key, or Cottrell Key. All three historically rich islands have magnificent beaches you will never forget!
Will there be room on the boat to stow my belongings?
Yes, there is room in the cabin to store limited belongings. If you have large items such as luggage, they can be stored at the Danger kiosk on land and securely locked up during the trip.
Is the boat wheelchair accessible?
Both of our boats are wheelchair accessible. However, the lavatories on our boats are only accessible by ladder. Our crew will do their best to assist you to the restroom and into your kayak, but use your own discretion in deciding if this trip will be comfortable for you.
Are there restrooms on board?
The Danger has one clean, marine head whereas the Danger's Prize has two. All restroom facilities are unisex and accessible by ladder. A marine head is slightly different than your home facilities, but your crew will explain the simple instructions before we sail.
Are there showers on board?
Yes! Both of our boats are equipped with fresh water showers, if you'd like to rinse yourself off after snorkeling or kayaking.
Are there life jackets on board? Do I have to wear one?
Both the Danger and Danger's Prize are fully US Coast Guard certified, and carry enough life preservers for each of our passengers and crew. However, you are not required to wear life vests in most normal circumstances.
Is the boat safe?
Both the Danger and Danger's Prize are safe, steady vessels certified by the US Coast Guard. Before each trip, you will receive a full demonstration outlining the safety equipment on board: you will learn where the life jackets are stowed, where the fire fighting stations are and how to use them, and even how to use man overboard devices. We also have a first aid kit on board in accordance with regulations.
Will I get seasick?
Both the Danger and Danger's Prize are incredibly stable and steady vessels, and the protected waters of the Key West backcountry are typically smooth, even during particularly windy days. Most of our passengers have no issues with sea sickness. However, if you are prone to motion sickness, you may want take any necessary precautions as instructed by your physician.
Will there be music?
Yes! We have a huge selection of music on board, and take requests. If you prefer silence, we have no problem turning off the music so you can enjoy the natural sounds of the Key West National Wildlife Refuge.
