Activity Description
On Chasing the Dragon, you’ll visit America’s largest Chinatown and the most crowded neighborhood in San Francisco.

Highlights from Chasing the Dragon include:

  • Portsmouth Square, the City's birthplace and Chinatown's living room
  • Grant Avenue, San Francisco's oldest street
  • "Street of the Painted Balconies," "Street of the Gamblers," and other back alleys
  • A fortune cookie factory
  • Old St. Mary's, California's first cathedral and a survivor of the Great Earthquake and Fire
You’ll learn about why the Chinese settled here, their role in building the Transcontinental Railroad, and how they rebuilt after the Great Earthquake and Fire of 1906. You'll pass dim sum restaurants, herb shops, temples, and open-air markets along the route, too.

This tour examines three competing views of Chinatown:
  • The City’s most historic neighborhood and birthplace of San Francisco
  • The heart of the Bay Area's Chinese community and the forces that favored segregation over assimilation
  • An artificial tourist attraction designed to turn a burned-out ghetto into one of the country’s most popular travel destinations
Join us for this highly educational – and highly entertaining – tour of San Francisco’s most distinctive neighborhood!
