Description

Hop aboard the M. V. “Key Largo Princess” for our daily 2-hour tours to view the exciting, beautiful, underwater world of the John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park and the Key Largo National Marine Sanctuary.

The Key Largo Princess is a luxurious 75-foot, 140 passenger, glass-bottom aluminum motor yacht.  From our sun deck, you will have a panoramic offshore view of the Florida Keys and can view the ever changing colors of Atlantic Ocean.  During our 45-minute voyage out to the reefs feel free to relax on our sun deck as you sip a tropical cocktail or beverage from our full service bar.  Or, if you prefer, you can ride in the comfort of our climate-controlled main cabin.

Once we reach the reef you can stand and lean against the railing or sit and dangle your feet to look into our large viewing windows. These are large enough for everyone to observe the reef at the same time and are located along the center of the boat and installed flat so there is no distortion other than what nature creates.

Everything you see is or was alive and the reef itself is built of many varieties of living coral and teems with an assortment of sea life.  Your narrator will point out all kinds of sea creatures which may include:
  • Sea fans
  • Sea plumes
  • Hundreds of fish - from small tropical fish to the larger species sought after by local fisherman
Occasionally we'll even spot some of the ship wreckage that has been left behind by those who were most likely defeated by King Neptune over the years.

What Is Not Included?

Drinks and snacks are not included in the ticket price but are available for purchase on board the boat.

Meeting Location

Key Largo Holiday Inn (Key Largo, FL) (Exact meeting location details will be provided immediately upon purchase of tickets.)
Do I have to purchase tickets in advance?
Advance purchase is strongly recommended, as trips often sell out quickly. To maximize your chances of getting the day and time you prefer, please buy your tickets well in advance. Tickets can only be purchased with a Visa, MasterCard or American Express.
Is there any age limit? Can children come?
We love children! Reduced price tickets are available for children 11 years of age and under and toddler under the age of 2 can attend for free. Please note that due to Coast Guard rules all children are required to have a ticket, even a free Toddler ticket. If you are concerned about the sea conditions or rocking of the boat for children under the age of 2, please feel free to click on the "Contact KLPrincess" link to discuss the latest weather forecast and sea conditions.
Is the trip suitable for pregnant women?
There are no restrictions as to whether pregnant women can attend and most shouldn't have any problem. Please keep in mind that the boat does go out on the open ocean and is subject to daily sea conditions. It is up to the individual and their symptoms at the time whether they will be comfortable on the boat and at sea for the duration of the cruise. If you have any concerns, you should consult your doctor.
What happens if it rains?
We still go out. We are primarily concerned with wind and sea conditions and they are not necessarily bad during the rain. If it is raining, please dress appropriately and consider bringing a poncho if you can. In the case of severe weather, we may cancel the trip up to an hour before the start time in which case you will be allowed to reschedule tickets, subject to availability, or receive credit for a future event.
What reef does the boat go to?
On this cruise, we visit the Molasses Reef, which is a coral reef located within the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary.
What types of things will I see?
You’ll see corals, tropical fish, plus some of the species served in our local dining establishments, along with some ship wreckage.
Does the boat go to the John Pennekamp State Park?
Yes, we go through the waters of the John Pennekamp State Park and into the waters of the Key Largo National Marine Sanctuary.
How far will the boat go out?
The boat will usually go about 7 miles from the shore. Please note that land will always be in sight.
How long is the trip? How long does it take to get to the reef?
The entire trip from dock to dock is two hours long. It takes about 45 minutes to get out to the reef where we will spend about a half hour viewing and learning about the various sea life.
How deep is the reef?
We visit the Molasses Reef and the area we cruise over is anywhere from 10 to 60 feet deep.
What side of the Keys do we cruise on? The ocean side or bay side?
The Molasses Reef, which we visit on these tours, is on the ocean side of Key Largo.
Can we get off the boat and swim?
No, unfortunately the boat is moving the entire time, as we cover as much of the reef as we can, so there is no opportunity to swim.
What should I bring with me on the boat?
We suggest bringing a camera, sunscreen, hat, and jacket or sweater. If the weather is rainy, you may want to consider bringing a poncho or rain jacket.
Are food and drinks available on board the boat? Can we bring our own?
The Key Largo Princess galley offers a variety of snacks and drinks for sale on board for a nominal charge. We have soda, water, beer, wine, mixed drinks, and some of the best frozen drinks in town, along with chips and other snack foods. Unfortunately, personal food and beverages are not allowed on the boat.
Is there any shade on the boat?
The boat includes both an outside sun deck as well as a climate-controlled interior main cabin. Depending on the weather, guests can choose to sit wherever they prefer.
Is there a bathroom on board?
Yes, there is a bathroom available on the boat, but please keep in mind that it is not wheelchair accessible and a handicapped passenger will likely need assistance.
Are there life jackets on board? Do I have to wear one?
Our boat is US Coast Guard certified and has life jackets on board for every passenger. However, you are not required to wear a life jacket during the trip.
Is smoking allowed on the boat?
Smoking is not allowed inside the cabin, or on the upper deck, smoking is allowed on the lower aft (back) deck and ash trays are provided, but please do not teach the fish to smoke.
Is the boat wheelchair accessible?
We are able to accommodate wheelchairs, however, please keep in mind that the bathroom is not 100% wheelchair accessible and a handicapped passenger will most likely need assistance to use the bathroom.
Will I get seasick?
On this trip we cruise out on the open ocean, and therefore are subject to the motion of the ocean. If you are prone to motion sickness, please be sure to take the appropriate precautions before your cruise. We do have several motion sickness remedies including Dramamine, Travel Time, and Acu-Strap, available for purchase in our gift shop, though we cannot officially advise you to take any medications. If you are unsure whether you will be seasick, our general rule of thumb is if you can read a book while riding in the car, you should be okay.
What should I wear?
Guests should dress casually based on the day's weather. On sunny days, you might want to consider sunscreen, sunglasses or a hat, although guests can sit in the air conditioned main cabin on hot days. Please remember that it is generally cooler on the water and you may want to bring a light jacket or sweater, especially on overcast days.
Is there parking close by?
Yes! We have free parking available at the hotel. You should have no problem finding a space when you arrive.
Should I tip the crew?
Your mates work very hard to make your trip as enjoyable as possible. Tips are highly appreciated! A customary tip is 20% of the cost of the tickets.

Key Largo Princess

The Key Largo Princess parent company KLMT, Inc. has been family owned and operated since 1982. Since then we have carried approximately 1 million people to experience the underwater world off the coast of the Florida Keys.

We offer daily cruises on the "Key Largo Princess 2." This glass-bottom boat has 280 square feet of clear glass to view the undersea realm of the John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park and the Key Largo National Marine Sanctuary and is the only one of its kind in the continental United States.

The Key Largo Princess 2 includes both an open sun deck as well as an enclosed air-conditioned salon, where guests can enjoy the ocean views.  The boat also features a full service bar, for guests who'd like to enjoy a cocktail during the cruise out to the coral reef.

Once at the reef, guests will have the opportunity to view and learn about sea life and hopefully spot a variety of exciting sea creatures. The Captain and crew work very hard to make sure that our guests have the best possible experience with the conditions that Mother Nature provides.

In addition to our daily cruises, the Key Largo Princess 2 is also available for private charters.  The boat makes the perfect venue for all kinds of special events including private cocktail cruises, weddings or business outings.
