About Spreckels

Used as the setting for the James Dean film “East of Eden,” Spreckels is one of the best-preserved company towns in the United States. Spreckels Sugar Factory owner Claus Spreckels started the town in 1898 in order to house his sugar beet refinery workers. Each Independence Day, the town throws a parade and 1K fun run through picturesque Main Street and Spreckels Memorial Park.
