The Boston Harbor Islands national park area includes thirty-four islands within Boston Harbor. The park extends seaward 11 miles from downtown Boston. The islands form a transition between the open ocean and the settled coast. They are a gateway to a long sweep of history, from Native American uses through the explosive growth of the city and industry, and, now, Boston's reconnection to a clean harbor.

Residents and visitors from near and far, now come into the harbor and to the islands for nature walks, picnics, swimming, camping, historic tours, and other recreational activities. The islands' proximity to a large urban population and their special natural, geological, cultural and historic resources contribute to their national significance and appeal.
