We Hip Hopped thru Harlem!
Thu, Jul 17, 08   12:10 PM dawneyland Female 50-59 International Tourist(s) Family With Children
Our tour guide Reggie Reg was funny, congenial and a living history of Hip Hop! The tour began at the Museum of New York City and the video history of New York provided a good introduction to the tour. Reggie was open to any and all questions and suggestions. In particular we enjoyed the real experience of Reggie, he grew up in the community - Harlem and Hip Hop and it is clear that he is passionate about both. We found the heat a bit daunting and would've loved to have dined at the restaurant we visited at the end of the tour, but we were too hot and tired to indulge! We will return! Thanks Reggie!

My son and I took this tour after I read about it on line. I'm not a hip hop fan but knew my son listened to it often. We both enjoyed it very much. Me as new to the music and learning to appreciate it's background and importance to it's fans. My son as learning about the history and development of some of his favorite artists. Our tour guide John did a great job and made the walk very interesting. And fun. We agreed that during our next trip to NYC we will take the whole day bus tour and see even more next time.

I am not into Hip Hop at all. I took this tour with 3 teenagers because they wanted to take it. I came away with a different point of view. I have so much more respect for the original Hip Hop artists!!!!! WOW. I was blown away! Very professional and amazing! Thank you! The best tour I have ever taken

Hip Hop tour of Holland

John was terrific. I brought 4 Ca. friends, basically four demanding "president" types. All chiefs, no indians. He sized up the situation very accurately and was able to keep them all happy -- practically an impossiblity. I've known these ladies for 37 years. and this was not an easy task. I, as a musician, loved learning what he said about Hip Hop, something all of us classicists have a hard time understanding. I would very much like to know of a very good tour to hear Gospel singing and some of the the musicians John told me lead your tours. Pls. write me about these.

I'm going home to look up details on the whole genre .. names in my memory coming back to me....exciting to be shown round by Mr. Blow, I looked him up on the internet and realised how pioneering he was and what he stands for now. and that restaurant was unexpected and just right. Our 10 year old has started making up rhymes A really good, memorable tourist experience, thanks

Most authentic New York Experience

Having been to New York City many times, I would have to say that the Hip Hop Tour Led by the Pioneering Legends of Rap was one of the most enjoyable, interesting and authentic experience I've ever had there. The guides were engaging, passionate and excellent and both my 19 year old son and myself thouroughly had a blast. In fact, it was the only part of our 3 day N.Y. trip we kept talking about days afterwards. Thanks to Debra the organizer, Grand Master Caz , JDL, and Puerto Rico. A good time was had by all.

SIMPLY PUT, TAKE THE TOUR..... MY DAUGHTER AND I FROM TWO DIFFERENT MUSIC DECADES WERE INFORMED OF THE EAST COAST HIP HOP MUSIC SCENE, FROM ITS HUMBLE BEGINNINGS TO WHERE IT STANDS NOW, ALONG THE WAY BEING SHOWN SOME OF THE MEMORABLE SIGHTS OF NOTABLE EVENTS AND POINTS OF INTEREST. YOU ARE IN THE COMPANY OF PEOPLE WHO HAVE PLAYED A MAJOR PART AND CONTINUE TO DO SO IN THIS INTRUIGING SIDE OF THE MUSIC INDUSTRY. IT WAS AN HONOUR, TO MIKEY "D" AND COMPANY, CHEERS. GARETH AND LEANNE.

My 15-year-old son and I have a somewhat limited interest in hip hop per se, but we dig the culture, graffiti, origins of all black music styles, including jazz, old style R&B, soul, funk, etc. Our charming tour guide, 'Reggie Reg' from the legendary 'Crash Crew' (authentic Sugarhill Records act, known for their 1980 debut 'High Powered Rap' ) met our 8-strong walking group at an uptown museum, and walked us to deepest Harlem, via the Graffiti Wall of Fame, Apollo Theatre and Happyhouse Record Store Reggie spun the sounds on a portable speaker, including S Wonder, J Brown and Fatback Band and explained how hip hop came about through young R&B fans in the Bronx wanting to make their own noise, DJ-ing, scratching, rappping, taking it all the way to Grandmaster Flash, Sugarhill Gang, etc. By recording live DJs direct onto their boom boxes and recycling cassettes to the new young hip hop market, pioneers like the Crash Crew virtually invented the illegal download (!) and today's multi million dollar hip hop industry. Reggie finished the two hour walk on 125th Street - an area us whiteys would have avoided even five years ago - but no worries, it was as calm as Downtown Disney, with loads of great record and clothing stores, and for a thrilling remnder of the past, the Hotel Theresa building where Cab Calloway, Ray Charles, Sam Cooke and every black superstar stayed when they played the Apollo in the glory days. A dignified subway ride on the A-train took us back to midtown. A highly recommended tour to anyone who digs black music.

Not only our children enjoyed the walk very much, even my wife and myself were very amused about the enthusiastic way our guide explained the early days of the Hip-Hop movement. It was a very enjoyable (and safe) way to get to know Harlem a little bit better as well.

much walking and talking, few sites visited

CWe enjoyed our host, Reggie Reg, who was friendly, funny and knowledgeable. Had trouble hearing what he was saying due to street noise. But aside from the graffitti wall of fame (really unique), we did not see much that was specific to hip hop culture or history. Also some stops listed on the web site -- hip hop clubs, oldest record store in Harlem -- were not visited and the Apollo stop was just a brief step into the lobby. The MSNY stop at the beginning, especially the video, had nothing to do with the tour, really. Better would have been a stop to see a video with some of the hip hop performers mentioned by our host.

I've been all over the world and this was one of the most fun things I have participated in. Great guides, very informative, fun and a look inside a world that shows diversity makes us all better as a whole. I, and my nieces, had a great time and appreciate the professionalism and talent of the persons involved. I would recommend this activity to anyone, it was fun!

great intro to hip-hop

hip-hop 101 on the bus, passing landmarks and stopping off to see graffiti hall of fame, break dancing and other important spots. the stop in harlem is especially good (soul food restaurant, too). bronx was only a brief drive-thru, but i guess it's important to at least go there. what makes this tour good is that it's led by an early hip-hop artist, in this case grandmaster caz, who was very entertaining.

This tour I would recommend. The guide was both knowledgeable and passionate about his subject. I saw parts of New York I would not have seen and learned some local history in the bargain. Make sure you are up for a good walk and you will enjoy this tour gauranteed. You must also try some soul food at the end. great !! thanks Reggie from Dad and Jon Boy
