I am a 32 year old B Boy from England, my whole reason to go to NYC was to see first hand where Hip Hop began. When i found out about the tour online, i thought yeah right like im going to meet a real pioneer....well how wrong was i!. We found the meeting place easy, Debbie was really nice to meet, the group was a mixture of races ages and religions-the way real hip hop is. When our guide arrived i was shocked to meet the one and only "Grandmaster Caz" from the hip hop legendary group the "Cold Crush Brothers". I was shocked after seeing him on tv, movies and listening to his music for over 25 years of my life-there he was in front of me!!!! this guy is a legend no doubt, he really broke it down for everyone and explained in a fun way about hip hop-he really is such a nice person who answered all the questions even my annoying show of hands as i knew the answers to so many of his questions!!!. The whole tour really did make my holiday to NYC complete and i would like to thank Caz and Debbie for that. No matter if you know everything or nothing about Hip hop go and see a true master at work....i recommend this tour 110% for anyone. Real Hip hop lives on!.

Our tour guide was Raheim from Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, and he was great at breaking down the orgins of hip-hop culture. My brother said it was one of the best tours he's ever been on and I agree ! If you want to avoid the tourist traps and visit the real New York, this tour is not to be missed.

Absolutely fantastic

It was great to meet a legend Grandmaster Caz, he was very enthusiastic, entertaining and had a vast insight to the history of Hip Hop. It was good to visit places like Bronx and Harlem which as tourist you are generally put off visiting. This tour made you feel quite safe going to these areas and highlighted the transformation that has taken place. Time flew by on the tour and you felt like you wanted it to last longer. Our 9 year old daughter and 5 year old son really enjoyed it; their best part was wearing the bling and the kangol hats. Visiting Rucker Park & the Graffiti Hall Of Fame was of special interest to my husband. For my 19 year old nephew, the soul food at the restaurant was the highlight of the tour. Great value for money and would recommend it to anyone visiting NYC with an interest in Hip Hop. The Catford (London) Crew.

This was my first time in NYC but it will definitely not be my last. The tour was great! It gives you an inside look of the start of Hip Hop. Kurtis Blow was my tour guide and did a wonderful job telling the hip hop history and linking it to the sites along the tour. The tour also gives you a chance to see Harlem and Bronx. I recommend this to the "old and new school" hip hop fans.

mad props to GM Cas and Debra

What a great time! Totally worth the price! Grandmaster Cas was knowledgeable and entertaining. The trip highlighted the four pillars of hip hop, b-boying, MCing, DJing and graf art. I learned a lot about the origins of hip hop, took lots of pictures, learned basic b-dancin' moves, and even got a chance to show off some MC skills. Pros: lots of fun, interactive, educational, just the right length, lunch included Cons: don't take this tour if you have no interest in hip hop, but that should go without saying. It's not a general tour of NYC with an emphasis on hip hop. It's all about hip hop. Suggestions: CDs are available for sale, but it would be nice to have the Kangol hats for sale as well. Maybe throw in the plastic bling bling as part of the tour.

Great introduction to Hip-Hop

I have never been very interested in Hip-Hop, but my husband has been brought up on the music, so I booked this for him. What a great excursion this was. We both thouroughly enjoyed it, learning about where it all started from someone who was there at the beginning. This is a MUST DO TRIP. There was a mixture of ages and nationalities and every one all seemed to enjoy it. It also gave us a chance to see a part of Harlem and the Bronx which we may not have ventured into before, being tourists in a different country. All in all it was a great day.

A truly amazing experience

It was an excellent day, something you must experieance if you have had any interest at all in the roots of hiphop. Covering every aspect of the culture I found the tour very informative and entertaining. This was largely due to having Grandmaster Caz as our host, it was great to hear his unbiased and detailed story of the early days of hiphop and the part he played in it. Higlights of the day included visiting 106 and park grafitti hall of fame, somewhere I have wanted to visit for many years - Excellent pieces by Dez, Ink76, Pink and Tats Crew. We also enjoyed visiting Rucker Park where we were given an exhibition in b-boying by some of the locals. Another highlight was visiting the Apollo theatre in Harlem, where we had the oppotunity to get off the bus and take photos. The only disappointing thing on an otherwise excellent day was not being able to actually enter the Hall of fame which was locked - although still managed to get some excellent photos. Just being able to visit places I had only ever seen in films and books was a truly amazing experience that I would recommend to anyone.

I highly recommend this tour for hip hop fans, music afficionados and culture seekers of all types. This tour is not just about music - it is about history, and to have the legends, the historians who were there lead the tour is what makes it most special. My tour guide, Grandmaster Caz, was (and is) the real thing and absolutely made the entire experience worthwhile. The stories and sites focus on the origins of hip hop and don't go past the early 1980s too too much. If you're not already schooled in the "old school," you might not understand the relevance of some of the tour stops, but fortunately, this tour inspires you to dig deeper and learn more about the history. I enjoyed myself so much that next time I'm in NY, I plan to take the tour AGAIN and bring a friend! djsoulsister

We thought this was an amazing tour. It was a great introduction for us to New York, the birthplace of Hip Hop. Grandmaster Caz knew what he was talking about because he was there, he lived it. If you want the low down on the birth of Hip Hop in New York, this is the tour to check out. Big thanks to Caz and Debra for making this an awesome tour!

Crown jewels

No matter which way you cut it, the figures don't lie. The culture of hip-hop is now a global phenomenon on many levels including socially and economically. Finally, a tour has been put together to not only acknowledge the stats, but to credit those responsible. I may be way off base, but I think the tour should have local [if not national] government support. The popularity of the tour will undoubtedly grow in the coming years, by which point it will have possibly been hijacked by a corporation keen to promote his/her own personal cause. I know it's easy for me to say as an 'outsider', but the fact remains, hip hop culture has, and continues to offer many positives to people from all walks of life, races and ages. In the long tradition of African-American expression, it will surely go down in history and the 'pioneers' should therefore be held in as much reverence as those from the traditions of Blues, Jazz and Soul. Additionally, the tour should become the centrepiece of a wider series of regularly scheduled events and activities that can serve as a living record of the culture for both locals and visitors from across the world. I was amongst the first of the many European followers of hip hop in the early eighties and prompted by pioneers like Dondi, Lee and Futura became a passionate and dedicated graffiti artist. I have since used my talents and skills to inform much of the work I do now both as an artist and professional designer. I'm reluctant to criticise the tour because of the many, many positives. I will therefore, end by saying that with continued support, community participation and of course PR and advertising, the tour and of course the culture, will eventually become recognised as a jewel in New York's crown.

This tour was great! Grandmaster Caz was very entertaining and informative. My homeboy and I planned for months to go on this tour when in NYC, and we were not disappointed. They took us to some very memoriable spots, and I took some great pictures at the Graffiti Hall of Fame. The lunch spot was off the hook. It was right up the street from the world famous Appollo, and it was a buffet. I am a vegetarian, and found plenty there to eat. Very tasty. Next time I go to NYC, I'm taking the subway to that restauraunt. Even if someone knows NOTHING about hip hop, I believe they would completely enjoy this tour. To see pictures of this tour, look for my New York adventure blog on my website: www.southeasthiphop.org on the links page. Also make sure you tune into www.wutkradio.com every Saturday Night for the Edutainment Hip Hop Show. Aight.

Absolutely recommend this tour to any Hip Hop fan. I'm an old school head / golden era b-boy. I had always dreamed of visiting New York for the simple fact that to me, a California native, the Bronx is like Hip Hop Mecca. Every B-boy has to make a pilgrimage. When I read about the Zerve tour, I knew that this was perfect for me. I would have never known how to see the places that made up the history of Hip Hop. This tour was exactly what I had hoped it would be. I even got to rub the Tree of Hope at the Apollo! Our host was Raheem from Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five...so dope! He was more than willing to answer all of my questions and discuss all things Hip Hop with me at great lengths. It was definately the highlight of my New York vacation. For anyone considering taking the tour, do it! DJ Gummo, Garden Grove, CA

Educational and informative

Raheim was very down to earth and not uptight like most of the pioneers from our era (I'm from that era too). It seems like every time I listen to one of the old school dudes, they are very hostile and have nothing good to say about the new generation. Personally, I have nothing good to say about the new generation either with exception to a few artists and I definitely understand where they come from with the hostility and all but, there's better ways to educate the youth and this tour is one of them. Raheim was cool (tight shirt and all...ha,ha). He provided us with some cool background of the origins of hip hop and was very informative about some of the locations, characters and situations that they had to deal with in order to make it happen. My only complaint is that he seemed to space out from time to time but thanks to the lady that was with him....she kept things rolling when he had his lapses. Other than that, he had good knowledge of what happened....just needed to work on the delivery a bit. My kids and myself had a good time though and the lunch was great. I definitely recommend it.

A Must Do!!!
Sat, Aug 6, 05   11:00 AM Cocoa1 Female 30-39 Domestic Tourist(s) Family With Children
My family and friends couldn't stop talking about the Hip Hop Tour. Grandmaster Caz and Raheem were funny, entertaining, insightful, and most of all good roll models for my children. We went to parts of New York that we would never had ventured to. They changed our views on Harlem and the Bronx. We learned about the history of hip-hop and have a better appreciation for it. I would recommend this tour to any family coming into New York. You will want to go out dancing after.
