A little bit of fun in the rain
Thu, Mar 2, 06   1:00 PM aefotieo Female Under 20 Domestic Tourist(s) Group of Friends
The tour was great! We really got to learn a lot about Hip hop/Harlem culture. Our guide was great, very knowledgeable of the history of Hip Hop because, well, he lived it. He was very friendly. I do wish we had been able to hear some of his music live but he explained that he didn't have a beat on him. But it was overall a great experience (minus the whole rain thing...but what ya gonna do?). I'd recommend it to anyone.

The Highlight of my first trip to New York City

What a treat. 3 friends from the United Kingdom, 2 with a love for hip hop and a bit of knowledge, one with no knowledge at all, we hoped to see some sights and find out a bit about Harlem. ...we were not sure what to expect. But right on time we were picked up by Raheim from Grand Master flash and The Furious Five, (imagine that!) Despite the beautiful sunshine there was a chill in the air, so he drove us from place to place. Not only did he take us to many important places in Hip Hop history, he taught us and chatted to us about the origin of Hip Hop and the culture that is Hip Hop. We saw the fabulous art / expressions at the Graffitti Wall of Fame in Spanish Harlem. Raheim was friendly, and chatty. I think the tour is adapted to who ever is on it. He certainly taught us plenty, and was patient with our limited knowledge. We stopped off for sweet potato pie in a local cafe as the final stop on the tour. Delicious. It was a great thing to do as part of our Holiday. Walking the tour would be just as good as driving. A friendly guided tour, with education. I don't think you'll find another tour in New York City that is so personalised. I would thoroughly recommend this tour. Thank you it was great.

I went on this tour with my Mom and brother and sister. We had no idea of what to expect...then Kurtis Blow walks on the bus! It was great to learn all the history of rap and to see some of the places I had heard about. The taping at the Apollo was the best part and the grafitti wall. They could have played more music on the bus....

A MUST DO TOUR!

This was my first time in NYC but it will definitely not be my last. The tour was great! It gives you an inside look of the start of Hip Hop. Kurtis Blow was my tour guide and did a wonderful job telling the hip hop history and linking it to the sites along the tour. The tour also gives you a chance to see Harlem and Bronx. I recommend this to the "old and new school" hip hop fans.

A very enjoyable and educational tour

My teenage son and I took the Hip Hop Walking Tour and enjoyed it very much. We spent almost two hours with our guide, Raheim, checking out many of the sites that have been an important part of Hip Hop music and culture. But the highlight was listening to Raheim talk about Hip Hop in general, as well as his personal music experience. Raheim has been an important contributor to Hip Hop, from his time as a member of Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five to his current gigs at B.B. King's and other clubs. He has influenced musicians from Puff Daddy to Snoop Dogg to Akon, so it was truly an honor to spend time with him and discuss music with him. And if you're really lucky, you may get him to perform for you, as he did for us.

My wife and I took our two teenage sons on the tour when we were on holiday in New York. We had expected to endure the tour rather than enjoy it. The opposite was certainly the case. The day we went it was very very cold. New york was just getting over it's biggest ever single snow fall. The warmth of the greeting we received along with the burning enthusiasm made sure it was all worthwhile. The guides, Rahiem and Red Alert gave us a lot of good information with passion and humour. There was loads of interaction with us. I was personaly struck by the fact that neither of these guys needed to be there. It was not a chore for them. They were obviously keen to impart their love of Hip-Hop and Rap to a wider audience. The highlights for me were the performance on the bus by Rahiem and the meal in the very good restaurant in Harlem. The boys loved it all. There are only two small points I would like to make that might improve things slightly: firstly it may be an idea to forget the hat and bling, give them to the guests to keep, or at least let them know when they are given out that they are only on loan. The other thing is that I'm sure an arrangement could be made to allow the tour guides to get a key for the graffiti wall, particularly as this tour promotes such a positive image of the art. This was a great tour filled with heart

My daughter and I thoroughly enjoyed the hip hop tour. We were greeted warmly and the day proceeded from there. Rafim did two amazing "raps" that made it clear to me that hip hop is clearly poetry to a beat. The group was an interesting mix all fun to be with. We found the tour to be educational and just plain fun. Be prepared that a lot of the places that hip hop originated have changed hands through the years, but we were still given the information to allow us to understand hip hop culture from its origins. We recommend it highly.

My kids and I loved this tour. Raheim and DJ Red Alert were AMAZING guides. They explained the significance of various stops along the way, and gave us first hand information of how it all started. Their enthusiasm and knowledge were awesome. I would recommend this memorable tour to anyone who loves hip hop.

Enjoyed the time, wished it went into the Bronx a little deeper. A ride around Yankee stadium was not what I expected. Could have been more about the birthplace and neighborhoods.

We very much enjoyed our tour and found our guide Raheim both interesting and professional. Only one of us on the tour is a hip hopper but my wife and I ,who are 'oldies', felt more of a connection to what the music and lyrics express. Raheim's knowlege of Harlem and hip hop in general is inspiring and infectious. My wife and I probably won't be doing the groupie thing anytime soon at hip hop concerts, but we will recommend anyone interested in bridging the generation and cultural gap to do this tour while enjoying the history of a 'way cool' place!

Unfortunately, the bad weather seemed to cut our tour a little short. We drove in a car, and the first half of the tour was really pretty interesting.. I am thinking that since we drove to the "snack" destination.... instead of walking we were given a shorter version of the tour. I still enjoyed myself.. and I know that this walking tour is still new... We did not get to see the graffiti wall of fame, which was kind of disappointing.. and our guide was pretty knowledgeable... but also seemed a bit distracted after our "snack" stop... would consider the bus tour, and hopefully we would get more from that experience...

mad props to GM Cas and Debra

What a great time! Totally worth the price! Grandmaster Cas was knowledgeable and entertaining. The trip highlighted the four pillars of hip hop, b-boying, MCing, DJing and graf art. I learned a lot about the origins of hip hop, took lots of pictures, learned basic b-dancin' moves, and even got a chance to show off some MC skills. Pros: lots of fun, interactive, educational, just the right length, lunch included Cons: don't take this tour if you have no interest in hip hop, but that should go without saying. It's not a general tour of NYC with an emphasis on hip hop. It's all about hip hop. Suggestions: CDs are available for sale, but it would be nice to have the Kangol hats for sale as well. Maybe throw in the plastic bling bling as part of the tour.

Hip Hop is a Beautiful Thing

Recommended For: If you like Hip Hop you will definately enjoy this tour - meaning: if you think you want to go, you will enjoy yourself. I've read all the books, heard the albums, seen the movies, but still learned much. Just meeting Grandmaster Caz was enough for me! (Tour guides can vary.) As a tour guide he was welcoming, funny, entertaining, and exciting. I even found the other tour goers interesting as most were from out of the country: Scotland, Kenya, Japan, Germany, London, etc. The food was good too. Hesitant Recommendation For: Locals - Being my first visit to NYC I especially enjoyed the drive with additional sights including the Apollo, Malcolm X Ave, and Yankee Stadium. But this MAY be redundant for someone who has seen it all already. Haters and perpetrators - I do believe enjoyment of this tour hinged on letting oneself enyoy the community of hip hop which means enjoying the tour guide and others on the tour. If you have a stick up your butt, this tour will not remove it for you.
