A Brilliant Tour
Wed, Aug 6, 08   1:00 PM roblucas Male 30-39 International Tourist(s) Individual
I have to say this is the best thing we did in New York. I love the Ramones and punk rock music from the 70's and 80's and really enjoyed the afternoon My girlfriend is into Celine Dion and she loved the tour as well! (She loved the stories and it has now given her a taste for the music). If you have any interest in what was going on in the New York scene or just love your music then this is the tour for you!

Very interesting way to spend a few hours

We attended the Rock and Roll walking tour on 13 May 2006. It was a very interesting way to spend a few hours and recommended to anyone who is into some of the finer music that came out of NYC from the 60s+. The guide Bobby Pinn was a very likeable guy and provided many facts about the East Village and the bands and artists who put the place on the musical map. Whilst many of the original locations may have gone (this was known when booking the tour), others were a pleasant surprise such Madonna's first home in the city, Led Zep classic album cover location, and best of the bunch, CBGB. With the latter expected to close up at the end of the summer, visit it whilst you can. The owner permitted the tour unlimited access to the building for great photo opportunities without the deafening sound of some of the less than classic bands who seem to play the joint nowadays. Overall, this is a reasonably priced and great way to spend a few hours in the East Village. Bobby also provides top tips on some of the bars and clubs to hang out in if sticking around the area or coming back another time.

Great Guide And A Good Tour! You See A Lot Of Historical Places And You Get A Lot Of Information. If You Have A Little Imagination You Can Take Your Brain Back In Those Days And You Can See The Ramones, Iggy Pop Or Television Walkin' The Streets And Performin' Their Gigs!

An Alternative look at NYC

As a young punk I would have loved to have been in NYC during the hayday of this neighborhood but it is better late than never. I brought my family who was really not familiar with the music scene that was going on in NYC in the late 70's and early 80's. They really enjoyed the tour but probably not to the extent perhaps as I did. I believe all in our party would highly recommend this tour.

Worth every cent, a highlight of our holiday!

My sister and I were on our first trip to New York and as a musician, I was really keen to learn as much anecdotal info about my favourite arists and where they used to hang out as I possibly could. This tour was ideal - Bobby knew so much about all the places he took us to, the visual aids (photographs and record sleeves) that he carried around with us really added to the experience and put everything he told us about into context. It was like a really awesome music documentary, only we could actually walk and touch and see the places for ourselves, rather than just watching on a screen - I thought it was fantastic! We felt like we were really soaking up the history and energy of the place - Bobby picked his locations well. It didn't feel rushed and it felt like we got around a good number of interesting places. It wasn't just about where we went so much as the stories he told us about each place and each character who had lived or partied there. Thanks for making this day one of the highlights of our week-long stay in New York! Next time I come to the city, I would be tempted to take one of Bobby's other tours of New York, as this one was worth every cent.

Great way to spend 2 hours

Booked on the basis of London Daily Telegraph article and reviews on here. Turned out we were the only group that day, but "Bobbie Pinn" treated us to the full tour regardless. As a guide he is full of knowledge and enthusiasm for his subject and can hold forth with humour and authority on everything from Velvet Underground to his favourites - The Ramones. If he has a fault, it is that he assumes everyone is an enthusiast for every band he mentions. So we told him (cos he asked) that US punk had pretty much passed us by - though we were interested in what he could tell us - and he then continued to talk as if we had every NY Dolls and Ramones album issued. It's a very small criticism and only very slightly lessened our enjoyment of his rock'n'roll history lesson. A word of warning - NY can be hot and humid and this is a 2 hour walking tour at quite a brisk pace, so anyone who isn't somewhat fit may struggle. But go if you can, this is definitely one of the best things you can do with an afternoon in New York.

Punk Rock and Egg Cream

It was Bobby Pin (good name by the way) who took my son and I on the tour, unfortunately we could only do the first hour due to unforseen problems on our part but I would recommend this tour to any one interested in the history of punk. The knowledge and the obvious love of music that Bobby has shone through and should we ever be lucky to visit New York in the future I would definitely go on the tour again. My son who is eighteen could`nt stop talking about the experience and is now downloading The Ramones, Television, The New York dolls. Heck we even went back to the Gem Spa for an egg cream?

More or less lived up to what I thought it would be, but would have liked a little Johnny Thunders info thrown in. If you've read "Please Kill Me " your one step ahead already. Cute tour guide provided some additional eye candy. Covered a wider time frame than I had expected - interested me at 25 and my mother at 48. If you've never done the LES thing before it's a good primer and if you haven't been in a while it's a good refresher course. DO NOT WEAR HEELS!!!!! Bust out the Chucks or creepers for this one. Gets an overall 8.0.

The tourleader is authentic, enthusiast and a great narrator. By his stories and examples you will relive the late 60's through 80's of Glam and Rock Punk in the East Village. Even if you are not a great Punk Rock fan it is still nice to know more about the East Village and its subculture.
