Activity Description
Want to experience today's Harlem? This outing truly captures the flavor of uptown elegance, 1890s-style. Passing through two landmarked districts, we’ll see Harlem's most gorgeous residential blocks.

  • We begin in the celebrated district known as Sugar Hill. The blocks along Convent Avenue are as stunning as any in the city, with a remarkable variety of architectural styles apparent. Then we stroll along famous Strivers Row for more evidence of the neighborhood renaissance currently underway. Some of Manhattan’s most beautiful churches lie along this route, as do numerous sites associated with the civil rights struggle.

  • Passing the locations of more than two dozen jazz clubs, we'll also note the former homes of jazz world notables like Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Coleman Hawkins, Dinah Washington, Dizzy Gillespie, Lionel Hampton and Mary Lou Williams. Langston Hughes, Marcus Garvey, Madam C.J. Walker, Father Divine, Scott Joplin, W.C. Handy, Eubie Blake, Jelly Roll Morton, Billie Holiday and Fats Waller all lived here, too.

  • Below 125th St. (most famous for the Hotel Theresa and the Apollo Theater), we’ll see a highly desirable residential quarter that was once home to the city's second largest Jewish community. Along the way are New York's only surviving fire watchtower, Alexander Hamilton's country cottage, the Tree of Hope and much more.
As you'll discover, Harlem's looking great these days!
