Do you believe in ghosts?  Beyond the rhythms of Beale Street's blues lies a darker history of vice, voodoo, phantoms, ghosts and lost souls.
During this two-hour tour, your guide will lead you through the dark mysteries and spooky tales behind such haunted sites as:
  • The Orpheum Theater, home of "Mary," who has haunted performances since 1921
  • John Alexander Austin House, a Victorian era mansion haunted by lovers
  • Potontoc Hotel, haunted by former caretaker Sidney; we see paranormal phenomena here on an almost weekly basis.
  • The notorious Ernestine & Hazel's, a former brothel long recognized as one of the most haunted buildings in Memphis.  It is home to several ghosts as well as a haunted jukebox.
Please note, this tour is primarily outside.   We do go into Ernestine & Hazel's, but we are unable to go inside the Orpheum Theater or any of the private residences.

The tour is appropriate for all ages. Join us today to experience the haunted side of Memphis.

Offered nightly, March through October; Saturdays only in November.

On Saturday, JULY 19, we are hosting the Ultimate Memphis Ghost Hunt, a special one-time-only tour. The tour features paranormal investigations of the city's most haunted places led by professional ghost hunters. For information and tickets, click on Ultimate Memphis Ghost Hunt.

What Is Not Included?

Food and beverages are not included on the tour. Feel free to bring your own!

The tour offers an exploration of Ernestine & Hazel's.  The rest of the tour is outside.

I liked our guide but he was a bit 'windy' with unnecessary info. Also would like to have heard more on the history of Memphis.

Ok, but not for skeptics

If you are a skeptic of ghosts like I am this tour won't do much to change your mind. The guide was personable and quite knowledgeable about Memphis history, but the ghost stories are vague, and entirely made up of heresay. Fun, but don't expect to have an encounter with ghosts.

Review from a local Memphian
Fri, May 13  8:00 PM Unspecified Unspecified Local Unspecified
I attended the ghost tour on Friday the 13th for a good friend's birthday celebration. I have lived in downtown Memphis for 5 years now and absolutely love the camaraderie: seeing and speaking with people walking around, outdoor eating in the spring and summer time, and the history downtown holds. Due to all of this I was thoroughly excited about the tour. The tour itself was lovely, but the tour guide is the reason I am giving this review the ranking I am. The tour is outdoors so there are going to be people walking around as locals or visiting, there's nothing you can do about that but embrace it because it's part of the downtown feel people love. There was a woman walking by trying to figure out directions; the tour guide stopped talking and started clicking his hand against his plastic cup giving the woman a nasty look as if he wanted to tell her to move along. I thought this was extremely rude and disrespectful. Secondly, there was a man on the tour from out of town that appeared to have an injured ankle that was walking slower. Instead of walking slower with the group the man and his wife got left behind at the second location, so far that they had to cross Front St. by themselves and missed part of the story. They also got left behind walking to the Green Beetle but I stayed back to wait since I knew the area. They also got left behind and missed part of the talk by the infamous MLK assassination hotel. I didn't expect the tour guide to slow down completely, but there was zero effort made. Thirdly, when we were in front of E&H a man was mentioning to his wife how he would like to hang out at a local bar in the area after the tour. He was not being loud, we were outside for heaven's sake, and the tour guide called the gentleman out and said "is there something you'd like to say? Would you like to share with the group because I am sure everyone would like to hear? I'm trying to give a talk but if you'd like to speak then please go ahead? Are you sure?...are you sure?". This was completely uncalled for, extremely distracting, and ruined the tour in my opinion. Lastly, there was a woman who asked him about a restaurant in the area and if it was good, his response "yep." Being from Memphis, I would be appalled going on a tour as a visitor and thinking that even by a chance the people of Memphis acted like this. I don't know if this review will be seen by that specific tour guide, but I surely do hope it was brought to his attention because I will not be suggesting this tour to anyone based solely on the tour guide and his demeanor to the locals and tour attendees encountered and the injured man's treatment.

Very informative and fun!

This was my first ghost tour—or tour of any kind for that matter. I usually avoid them for being too "touristy" but this one was fantastic! My friend from out of town dragged me to it. The guide, Michael, was very personable, informative, and great to talk to. He's flexible and does his best to make sure you get everything you want out of the tour. Would definitely do again!

What is the difference between your tours?
The Walking Ghost Tour and the Dark Side of Memphis tour both visit Memphis after-dark and explore its haunted history, but differ in the sites they see and the length of the tour. The Historic Memphis tour includes sites relating to the city's founding, early cotton trade, Civil War, and 19th and 20th century events. We also have several sightseeing bus tours: a general Memphis Mojo tour (that includes on Friday and Saturday mornings a guided tour of Sun Studio), an Elvis - based Hound Dog tour that includes a guided tour of Sun Studio, and a tour that visits Graceland with a Platinum Pass included!
Are there any foods or beverages on the tour?
There are no foods or beverages included on the tour; however, there are some beverages available at the meeting location. Water and sodas are $2, and beer is $4.50.
Can I bring my own food and beverages on the tour?
Yes! You can bring any foods, alcoholic, or nonalcoholic beverages you would like on the tour. Keep in mind that although you may have alcohol outside on Beale Street legally, elsewhere in the city you will be required to keep your drink in a paper bag.
What should I bring with me on the tour?
We recommend that you bring cash in case you decide to purchase drinks at the meeting location or tip your hard working guide! Other than that, bring any essentials you may need, and most of all - good spirits!
Is the tour wheelchair accessible?
Yes. Wheelchairs should be able to navigate the streets of the tour just as well as the rest of us! The terrain is relatively flat and if you're in a wheelchair you should have no problem. For more information, click on "Contact Backbeat".
