Description

Do you believe in ghosts?  Beyond the rhythms of Beale Street's blues lies a darker history of vice, voodoo, phantoms, ghosts and lost souls.

During this two-hour tour, your guide will lead you through the dark mysteries and spooky tales behind such haunted sites as:
  • The Orpheum Theater, home of "Mary," who has haunted performances since 1921
  • John Alexander Austin House, a Victorian era mansion haunted by lovers
  • Potontoc Hotel, haunted by former caretaker Sidney; we see paranormal phenomena here on an almost weekly basis.
  • The notorious Ernestine & Hazel's, a former brothel long recognized as one of the most haunted buildings in Memphis.  It is home to several ghosts as well as a haunted jukebox.
Please note, this tour is primarily outside.   We do go into Ernestine & Hazel's, but we are unable to go inside the Orpheum Theater or any of the private residences.

The tour is appropriate for all ages. Join us today to experience the haunted side of Memphis.

Offered nightly, March through October; Saturdays only in November.

On Saturday, JULY 19, we are hosting the Ultimate Memphis Ghost Hunt, a special one-time-only tour. The tour features paranormal investigations of the city's most haunted places led by professional ghost hunters. For information and tickets, click on Ultimate Memphis Ghost Hunt.

What Is Not Included?

Food and beverages are not included on the tour. Feel free to bring your own!

The tour offers an exploration of Ernestine & Hazel's.  The rest of the tour is outside.

Ghost Tour
Sat, Feb 21  8:00 PM Female 20-29 Domestic Tourist(s) Group of Friends

My friend and I decided to eat at BB King's so we wouldn't be late to the tour. I wouldn't necessarily recommend this. Its really hectic and the music was so loud it was hard for our server to hear us. Since the tour isnt affiliated with the restaurant the staff was not very helpful in terms of confirming if our tour had been cancelled or not due to weather. When we finally found the guide it took a long time to wrangle all of the guest going on the tour even though there were only 6 of us (not his fault). Over all it was not a bad tour. It certainly could have been scarier. 2 hours is a long time for the short distance we ended up walking. Maybe in warmer weather the tour looks a bit different. I would have liked the guide to commit a little more to one style or the other. So, if you have 20 bucks lying around and need something to do for a while in between drinks its not a bad way to pass the time.

Emily, our guide, was wonderful and provided us with lots of historical facts and references. She gave us time to ask questions and spoke well. The tour is a walk through Memphis history and was quite interesting. i have to admit parts of the tour were creepy....but we didn't see or feel any ghosts. LOL

Experiencing the Dark Side of Memphis
Fri, Oct 31, 14  8:00 PM Male 50-59 Domestic Tourist(s) Couple on a Date

Our tour just happened to take place on halloween night so that made it sort of special but even had that not been the case this was well worth it. Our guide Emily was very sweet and knowledgeable. She kept it interesting and unlike many things our tour was kept right on track time wise. What also made the tour even more cool was Emily blended some cool history facts in with the paranormal facts. My wife and I both really liked this.

Great Experience, Even for Locals
Sat, Oct 25, 14  8:00 PM Female 20-29 Local Other

My parents came into town and thought this would be a fun thing to do close to Halloween. The stories along the tour were very interesting. As a local who likes ghost stories, there were even stops/stories along the tour that I was unaware of. I would highly recommend this tour to everyone, including locals!

We truly enjoyed our ghost tour thru downtown Memphis. Emily was an excellent guide. She included some historical facts about Memphis. I felt safe while walking at night. it was cool, all the history and seeing the areas that are haunted. the only thing I would suggest, it would have been better to be able to walk in the buildings but it was still cool.

Unfortunately we do not have waiting lists for our tours. Check another date and time, or check out our other offered tours!

What is the difference between your tours?
The Walking Ghost Tour and the Dark Side of Memphis tour both visit Memphis after-dark and explore its haunted history, but differ in the sites they see and the length of the tour. The Historic Memphis tour includes sites relating to the city's founding, early cotton trade, Civil War, and 19th and 20th century events. We also have several sightseeing bus tours: a general Memphis Mojo tour (that includes on Friday and Saturday mornings a guided tour of Sun Studio), an Elvis - based Hound Dog tour that includes a guided tour of Sun Studio, and a tour that visits Graceland with a Platinum Pass included!
Are there any foods or beverages on the tour?
There are no foods or beverages included on the tour; however, there are some beverages available at the meeting location. Water and sodas are $2, and beer is $4.50.
Can I bring my own food and beverages on the tour?
Yes! You can bring any foods, alcoholic, or nonalcoholic beverages you would like on the tour. Keep in mind that although you may have alcohol outside on Beale Street legally, elsewhere in the city you will be required to keep your drink in a paper bag.
What should I bring with me on the tour?
We recommend that you bring cash in case you decide to purchase drinks at the meeting location or tip your hard working guide! Other than that, bring any essentials you may need, and most of all - good spirits!
Is the tour wheelchair accessible?
Yes. Wheelchairs should be able to navigate the streets of the tour just as well as the rest of us! The terrain is relatively flat and if you're in a wheelchair you should have no problem. For more information, click on "Contact Backbeat".
