Highlight of Our Visit
Mon, Apr 14, 14   6:45 PM mdhurst Female 50-59 Domestic Tourist(s) Couple on a Date
This surprise activity was the highlight of out visit to Key West. James was thorough with explanation and finding critters to see and touch. We quickly got the hang of paddling which allowed us to enjoy our surroundings and we covered lots of water. (No sore arms the next day!) We highly recommend the sunset trip and the full moon was spectacular. The sounds were ever changing with the slight breeze. Going into the mangrove was was a little scary and very exciting. The trip was much more interesting and fun than what was expected.

Loved seeing the wildlife

You'd never know what was underneath you in the water until Chad pulls up the most wonderful "critters" from the bottom of the bay...All different kinds of sea creatures to see and touch. We also enjoyed seeing all the feathered friends above the water that are roosting in the trees at sunset...and speaking of the sunset...a lovely view from sea level. Be prepared to get a little wet from paddle drips.

Just a pleasant day on the water

We thought that the Boca Chica Kayak Tour really represented the scene at Key West.

We started from the back of a taxi repair depot at the edge of a commercial lobster fishing dock and set out into a fast moving channel. Our guide, Chris, was very easy going and guided our kayaks across the moving tide easily keeping sure that our boats did not go too shallow or get caught in the strong tide. Once in the bay we saw starfish, tarpon, sponges, crabs, urchin, and a few other fishes as well as several heron, egrit, osprey, all pointed out or temporarily captured by Chris for our handing pleasure. Oh, we saw four F-18 Hornets from the NAB nearby.

Our guide also new much about local habitat, laws, science of the ecosystem, and the people living in the bay. We learned much about the area while we paddled through the mangroves or across the open channel. My wife and I enjoyed ourselves, and plan to take the evening tour our next trip down.

The sunset eco tour was a great time, enjoyed by my brothers and 70-yr-old dad alike. Chad did a nice job of pointing out the local wildlife and providing interesting info on the unique South Florida ecosystem. Sometimes a little hard to hear, but overall very nice presentation. Seemed to be well-organized. Nice touch to pick us up at our hotel for no extra fee. We were blessed with an amazing sunset on our tour, which made our photos turn out great. Appreciated the bags to keep our cameras, etc. dry while kayaking. I've been on kayak tours before where they tell you not to bring cameras, and you really miss out on some great pics. I would certainly recommend to anyone planning a trip to Key West.

You Gotta Do This!

This tour is fantastic. It was rough paddling over to the mangroves due to wind (about 10 minutes) but once we were there our guide (Katie?) let us rest while she explained how the mangroves form. Then we paddled into and around the mangroves while she pointed pointed out many sea creatures and plant life. She pulled many things out of the water so we could see them better, and touch and hold them. She kept an easy pace so even the most beginner paddlers were able to keep up. I got lots of pictures on my camera, and my husband got lots of video. Felt comfortable taking our cameras because they gave us waterproof bags to keep them in when we were't filming. And that wind? It pushed us back to the dock when we were finished visiting the mangrove! The only complaint I would have is that my backside hurt from sitting too long. But other than that ..... I would do this tour again in a heartbeat.

Amazing Experience

This was totally worth it! It was one of the highlights of our trip to Key West. It was amazing to see and touch the sea creatures up close and to learn about them. The staff at Blue Planet was wonderful. I would recommend this experience to anyone visiting here. We appreciated the hotel pickup service, because traffic is crazy everywhere in Key West.

Can not recommend this tour company
Wed, Feb 4, 09   5:30 PM MaureenJ Female 60-69 Local Family Without Children
There are several reasons why I can not recommend this tour company and in fact would vehemently discourage anyone from using them.

The trip and the guide were completely unprofessional and unsafe. The tour operator and owner of the business was more concerned with getting his money than the safety and enjoyment of his clients. We asked before we took off if the winds were too strong and he just pooh pooh the idea. That evening there were 25-30 mile an hour winds and several times the gusts were so strong that one had to pull with the branches of the mango trees to keep from being blown backward. He rowed first and had no concern for everyone behind. He never checked to see if we were ok and only went back when others in the group told him someone was having trouble.

He did not go out to help a woman who had never kayaked before and had fallen way behind and was unable to get herself back because of the wind and the darkness. It fell to two of the other guests to make sure that she could get back to the dock. He was busy relieving himself.

We didn't get to see the sunset because he forgot until we reminded him and then he just told us to watch it in the clouds. Because the winds were so strong there was not much marine life, we saw a sponge, some jelly fish, and a sea cucumber in 2 and a half hours.

Finally he has never returned our phone calls, and we feel we are entitled to a full refund. I will do everything in my power, (blogs, calling the chamber of commerce) to let others know NOT to use this tour company.

Great one on one fun and learning experience

My fiance and I were surprised to find out we were the only two in the group. So we got a private tour. Quick and through safety and paddle lesson on the dock, since both of us had been kayaking before and away we went. Our guide was great at pointing out all the details, and was very knowledgable. Because it was just the two of us he extended our tour a bit. Got to walk around the sand bar and found some cool horseshoe crabs. All in all I would use this outfit again in a heart beat.

We liked trip and really relaxing. We didn't see as much as hope in terms of marine life but it was really nice to be out on the ocean!

Have fun and get only a little wet!

This was our favourite activity during our stay in Key West. My husband and I loved the actual kayaking and the serenity of being in the mangroves. Our guide was extremely informative and very helpful when I constantly got my kayak stuck facing the wrong way!

He found conchs - big and small - jelly fish, regular fish and so much more for us to

see and sometimes handle. There were very young kids and my 75 year old husband in

the group so this was great fun for all ages. On a future trip back to Key West we will

definitely do this again.

Great Little Adventure

My partner and I decided to book this excursion while on our pleasure trip to Key West. We really had a lovely time. I'm afraid that I have forgotten our guide's name (unforgiveable) but she really made it special. We enjoyed her excitement when she found a new creature to show us and she was exceptionally well spoken and clear. The tandem kayak was easy to use and we managed just fine. The rowing was easy this day (smooth water) but we were very glad we had hats and sunscreen! It is NOT HARD to do at all if you are of average health. We saw a stingray (yellow spotted), two sea cucumbers of different types, crab, fish, various heron, a weird shell-less snail (seahag or something), sea anemone and brilliant orange starfish! We really had a good time and were famished afterwards! Great trip out!
