Peaceful and Educational

We arrived at the pick up point and was a little worried that I wouldn't know who would pick us up, so I called the office. They were very helpful. The Blue Planet van arrived right on time and Andy was a delight. He led us to the place with no problems. They offered us water and use of the bathroom before we left. Our tour guide was Sarah. She had a great personality, very funny and very knowledgeable. Our trip was very serene. The mangroves were beautiful and Sarah showed us many treasures along the way. Queen Conch, Sea Urchin, Nurse Sharks, Jelly Fish and more!

Sunset Tour

Last year I did a kayak tour on the west coast of Florida and it was a highlight of that vacation. The guide was excellent and very helpful to the less skilled individuals in the group. He was informative and I learned so much about the ecosystems and just had an overall great experience.

This year I convinced my group of four women on vacation to do the sunset tour, even though some had limited kayaking experience. We had an enjoyable experience, DESPITE our tour guide, James. From the beginning of the trip, he seemed mildly annoyed at everything. He never gave clear definitive instructions on anything. When he made an attempt to explain we were going to do next, he was generally standing in his kayak speaking AWAY from the group and the entire group only heard bits and pieces of the explanation. Don't get me wrong, we loved the idea of the tour and the information that was given regarding the sea life that we saw was very cool. James just seemed like he was frustrated by the lack of kayaking skills, the need for him to repeat instruction (which meant he said the same thing just LOUDER), and the fact that we had no idea of what was coming up next. For example, when we went through the mangrove, half the group didn't hear that we were to follow him and sat in their kayaks. It would have been helpful to have specific instuctions such as splitting the oars or just leaving the oar in the kayak and pull yourself along with the branches because of the tight surroundings. Our group of four are all teachers, and we all agreed that James certainly could have used better methods to explain and instruct the group; it would have made for a much more enjoyable trip. His attitude really took away from this amazing trip. With any other instructor, I would be giving this trip a higher rating.

Great Experience!

We saw this kayaking trip on a list of Key West family activities and decided it would be a great experience. Despite the fact that my two kids (ages 8 and 11) had never kayaked we all had a great time and had no issues keeping up. The initial paddling out to the mangroves takes some work but the water is so calm it's not an issue. Despite the fact that children over 10 can have their own kayak I would recommend using a double with an adult unless the child has prior kayaking experience to avoid frustration. We saw spotted eagle rays, fish, a shark, lots of coral, and other sea life. It was such a great and different experience. Word of caution - bring sunblock and apply it regularly throughout the trip!!!!

Highlight of Our Visit

This surprise activity was the highlight of out visit to Key West. James was thorough with explanation and finding critters to see and touch. We quickly got the hang of paddling which allowed us to enjoy our surroundings and we covered lots of water. (No sore arms the next day!) We highly recommend the sunset trip and the full moon was spectacular. The sounds were ever changing with the slight breeze. Going into the mangrove was was a little scary and very exciting. The trip was much more interesting and fun than what was expected.

First of all, my overall experience around activites, restaurants and other tourist stops in Florida was one of mediocre to poor service. Doesn't Florida know that it survives on tourism?! Refreshingly, this was not the case on the Blue Planet Moonlight Kayak tour! The service was examplary from start to finish! I flew into Fort Lauderdale with my children (age 11 & 14) to spend some time in the Lauderdale area and in the Keys with my children and my niece (age 26). Of all the activities that we did, this was not only the best, but also the least expensive major activity we did during our 10 day trip. Other activities (including dolphin viewing, boat rides, snorkeling, airboat ride with multiple alligator sitings) were good, but this was by far the favorite of everyone in our group. We had all been paddling (at least canoeing) before, but my daughter had never kayaked before. This was not a problem. With minimal instruction, anyone can kayak. Our guide, Katie, was outstanding. She led us on a tour that lasted a total of 2.5 hours. We paddled out into the ocean to watch the sunset. On the way out, she spotted, picked up and passed around a large starfish, several sea cucumbers and lots of conch - alive, dead and dead but inhabited. Katie also had a small net to pick up creatures that couldn't be picked up and passed with bare hands. After adding a light to the back of each of our kayaks and providing each of us a headlamp, Katie then led us into the mangroves via a beautiful trail that wound through the trees. There we saw small crabs on the trees, weird jellyfish, and a variety of other sea critters. We even turned out our headlamps for awhile so we could see the bioluminecent organisims in the water that lit up like fireflys in the sea! It happened to be beautiful clear night that was awesome for star gazing as well! I would highly recommend this adventure to anyone who can get in and out of the kayak! Honestly, this was something that I never would of thought of doing but turned out to be a truly remarkable experience with a truly remarkable guide!! DO IT!! YOU WON'T REGRET IT!

Had such a good time! Our guide was very knowledgable. I don't swim well, but had no fear. The water was shallow. Easy paddling and saw lots of specimens from the ocean!!

Fantastic & Memorable Experience

We thoroughly enjoyed our kayak tour! Very informative, & we saw SO much marine life! This may not happen every trip I'm sure but we got lucky and saw: a manatee, tree frogs, live conch, a sting ray, a nurse shark, sea anemones, sponges, fish of all kinds, spiny sea urchin, and an octopus! It was great because our guide told us all about the animals, as well as the natural history of the area. If you want a small group experience that's representative of the real Key West, this is your ticket! Blue Planet is top notch!

We own two rental properties in KW. For the last five years, we are down with our two kids. A friend suggested we do this tour. We decided to book the tour for our last evening in KW. What a fabulous way to end the trip!

We will be recommending this to all of our renters.

Thanks for an enjoyable evening!

Our whole family LOVED our fantastic guided kayak tour. The highlight of the trip was seeing (and gently holding) some of the marine creatures that live in the waters. We enjoyed traveling through the mangrove formations, and our guide Sara told us interesting facts along the way. I especially enjoyed the beautiful color of the water. Our kayaks were comfortable and were easy to maneuver. This trip really made my vacation memorable, and I hope to come back soon.

Great conditions

We were lucky to have wonderful conditions for our moonlight kayak tour. The air and waters were calm and we had clear skies for sunset viewing. We were able to view sea creatures during our tour thanks to the eagle eyes of our guide, Kate. Our son even saw a Bonnethead Shark. Our family (Mom, Dad, 18yo daughter, 20 yo son) were joined by another group of tourists. Unfortunately, the other group made the tour a bit more difficult than it should have. They were loud, and they kept running into each other and us in our kayaks. For a tour where you want to commune with nature, loudness is not very desirable. We did enjoy it very much even with that problem.

A Perfect Balance To The Hustle and Bustle

This was our fourth trip to Key West and we were looking for an alternative to the Mallory Square sunset ritual. Our kayak tour was just the thing. It was a small, enthusiastic group of people and our guide, Katie was friendly and knowledgable. We got to see/touch/learn about all kinds of Key West marine life. All in all a great experience. We'll definitely do it again!

This kayaking trip was a peaceful way of exploring the ocean eco-system of Key West. I loved seeing the roosting area at dusk for the local birds, while continuing into night fall, observing the fascinating incubator and it's inhabitants. The grasses and mangroves provide a haven for the most interesting creatures in plant life , sea creatures, and even delicate little fire flies. I loved this trip because it is such a refreshing diversion from usual tourist activities. I strongly recommend this activity for young or old.
