Our kayaking guide, Katie, took us on a 2.5 hour trip thru the Mangroves and other areas which allowed us to see some marine life (sea cucumbers, jellyfish, hermit crabs in conch shells, etc). She was very knowledgeable about the marine life and areas we kayaked through. As a beginner, kayaking is very easy to pick-up and had no difficulties in steering and paddleing.

I would recommend the Blue Planet kayaking tour.

Highlight of our trip!

This was an amazing tour! Chad, the marine biologist did a fabulous job of assisting us with kayak refresher basics, and narrating the encounters with diverse sea and bird life. While we were getting set up, a manatee cruised by the dock area and presented itself for a little petting. Then an octopus appeared and tried to crawl up the concrete wall! I got some amazing pictures. We paddled across the bay to the bird rookery and watched an amazing sunset from there. The waters are mostly shallow- around 3' and at the deepest round 16', and it was very calm. From the rookery we watched the birds flying in for the evening against a gorgeous sky. As the sun went down we paddled across to a small mangrove island. The sky and sea were on fire that night and I got the most amazing pictures! We zigzagged through the mangrove trails and got to see phosphorescent algaes that lit up as we paddled through, also glowing sea worms, plus star fish, anemones, tree crabs, another octopus, qween conch, yellow ray and other creatures. Bug spray was helpful in this area but they weren't too bad.

Blue Planet has some nice tee shirts, hats and tank tops to purchase and they are reasonable in price. Another plus: they picked us up and delivered us back to our B&B. We would take another tour through this company- they do day excursions too. Highly recommended!!!

We had a wonderful private tour as there were only the 2 of us booked at that time. Our guide James was very knowledgeable concerning the eco system and the environment of the Florida Keys. We experienced the wildlife and the natural beauty of the water. He was able to answer many of our questions and we would highly recommend taking this Kayak Tour

Excellent kayak trip through the mangroves

This was our first trip to Key West and we really love kayaking and wanted to see a much different environment than we are used to. The car picked us up at the hotel right on time and brought us the short distance to Boca Chica and within a very short time we were on the water. The tour leader was extremely personable, enthousiastic and knowledgeable of the area. She was able to show us different sea life and tell us about the "biology" of the sea animals. She made the trip all the more fun. It did not hurt that the weather was beautiful. I suggest bringing water and perhaps a snack because these are not provided. Also....a camera for sure.

I would definitely recomment Blue Planet for water activities. As a matter of fact we took the private tour with Chad (the owner) and this was a much longer voyage and more challenging. Being a biologist, Chad was able to tell us alot about the mangroves and the environment we in which we were kayaking.

I would recomment making reservations ahead of time to be sure to get the day and

time you wish to kayak. These were the highlights of our vacation in Key West.

Great way to experience Key West

Great way to get to know what is around you in Key West.

Opted for the two person kayek which was useful to chat with your partner as you explore the different areas and follow your guide.

Certainly make sure you keep warm with a few different layers of clothing, ideally, wear some waterproof materials. We got caught with a nearby boat that generated waves that went over the kayek and we got wet, but all apart of the experience.

I would certainly recommend this activity. Enjoy!

The eco-kayak tour was great. I recommend it highly. Chad was very knowledgeable and friendly. It's amazing to see him standing in his kayak looking for creatures on the bottom.

Our guide Sara was very friendly and informative. A great trip for beginners that want to see what kayaking is like. Not much wild life to be seen on our day, but going thru the mangroves was fun.

Not much marine life to see
Fri, Apr 22  10:30 AM dmitrykrass Male 50-59 International Tourist(s) Family Without Children
At the start of the tour the guide explained that we will not see much (high tide, poor visibility, etc.). This was exactly true - saw a few birds, a jellyfish, and a slug - far cry from either sedentary (coral, conch) or mobile (turtles, rays) wildlife mentioned on the site. If the conditions were truly exceptionally poor, the tour should have been cancelled or, at least, warning issued before the tour is bought. Being warned 5 minutes into the tour was a bit of a downer. Having said that, the guide was nice and kayaking through mangrove forest is cool.

Blue Planet Kayak Tours responded:
First let me thank this customer for an objective complaint. It is true we are at the mercy of a number of factors including wind, rain, and tides when it comes to what we see on a tour. That being said it is usually not possible to forecast the clarity of the water for any given tour. And this tour was no exception. Some high tides bring dirty water, some don't. Some rains cloud the water, some do not. When we began this tour I noted these factors as an explaination of the water clarity. I'm pleased we saw the animals he listed and it did not ruin the tour for him.

The Blue Planet Kayak team were friendly and helpful and delivered exactly what they promised. The free door to door transportation was an excellent added convenience. Andy was a knowledgeable guide who looked out for everyone, with tips on technique and precautions. He knew the area and the creatures in the environment and was able to answe all of our questions well. Thanks for a great experience!
