Grey whale season in a lull
Sat, Feb 23, 08   10:00 AM MWright Female 50-59 International Tourist(s) Individual
Captain did report that the grey whales were less frequent in that week in February, but only when we finally saw whales after looking for 1 and a half hours. In fact, they were closer in to shore and sailboats surrounded them, preventing us from getting closer. Their return to the north apparently starts in a weeks' time, so I just mistimed my visit.

Excellent Value

If you can get passed the pretencious, snobby, plastic locals that live outside of their means, in a dream world - the area is actually really nice. The ship it self was very clean, well maintained, with very well educated staff. I felt safe the entire time, as did my girlfriend. We were just looking for something to do to get away from Disneyland for a day, and this seemed like a good idea. We saw grey whales surface several times, and some dolphins jumping, as well as sea lions (these can be seen at pretty much every rocky point on the west coast, but still interesting). There are food and drinks on the ship, and the one guy who's name I can't remember - he actually stays on deck with you and is full of useful information about the area. I definitely will return and do this again, and highly recommend it for couples or families.

A good cruise, but not many animals

The cruise was enjoyable; it was nice to see the California coast from the ocean.

As we got on the boat, I overheard one of the staff members mention that they had only seen one whale this season. (I don't know when their 'season' starts.) Of course, they have no control over whether they will see any animals, but it's probably good for people to book the cruise and just relax and enjoy the ride with little expectation of seeing anything.

We saw a number of sea lions, but no whales or dolphins.

Wear warm clothing!! Enjoy!

Got to see 3 blue whales

This was my first time going on a whale watching trip. Brought wife and children and my mother and siblings. The trip was a 2 hour trip which is what I recommend. Some other whale watching trips are 3 hours but really after 2 hours, we had enough. The water was a little rough and some people on the trip got sea sick and had to lie down for most of the trip. I would not go on this trip if you get motion sickness easily. We did see 3 blule whales, one of them was pretty close. The other two were farther away. The drawback on this trip is that the wales surface for only a minute or two them they go under for 10 minutes. So the majority of the time is spent waiting for the whale to resurface. It's a nice trip, but plan on enjoying the view of the sea more than watching whales.

Awesome Adventure!

This was a very special trip for my husband and I. We had never been whale watching and this did not disappoint! We were very fortunate to enjoy many sightings of the massive Blue Whale in all their glory. The crewman estimated it at about 80-90 feet long and the boat was 60 feet so you had some perspective of the size. At one point we even saw three of them in extremely close to proximity to one another but not too close to the boat. One of the crewmen said we were experiencing something very special and we all quieted down our level of excitement in order to hear them breathe.

The boat, on board refreshment-availability, crew, and the amazing sightings all exceeded my expectations. Highly recommended!

My wife and I drove three hours from Bakersfield to our hotel in San Clemente in order to the Whale and Dolphin Watching Adventure courtesy of the Dana Whark Sportfishing and Whale Watching. We got our money's worth. The boat crew was professional and courteous. We saw dolphins and sea lions, and at least six Blue Whales!!
