Whale of a good time, (sorry).

Gorgeous day, light swell, informative Captain. We were not out of the harbor more than ten minutes before we spotted our first gray whale dipping peacefully in and out of the surf about fifty feet from our bow. Unfortunately, due to a medical emergency on board, we had to return to port about an hour into the two hour excursion. However, the Captain graciously took us right back out, which turned into the highlight of the excursion. We immediately headed for a cluster of boats and caught up with another gray whale surrounded by common dolphins as they romped and played together to our visual delight. Great day, great hosts, highly recommended.

Educational experience

We took the 2 hour boat trip and it was so nice it didn't seem that long out on the water. So exciting that we actually viewed a whale. The entire boat was caught up in the moment that we all exclaimed "there it is" each time the whale surfaced. I wish we would have been able to come upon a group of whales but it was still an experience to remember.

Spectacular day

This was just a wonderful experience. The weather was lovely with blue skies and cool temperatures. The boat ride was pretty smooth. We saw lots of dolphins and several seals. I was beginning to wonder if we were going to see any whales when the captain asked us to hold on because he was going to pick up speed. About ten minutes later he announced that a pair of grey whales had been spotted in the area we were now cruising. And about a minute later we were treated to the presence of whales. We cruised along with them for what seemed like a long time, and just as we're were about to leave one of them breeched, not once , but three or four times. It was marvelous. This is something we will do again. Bring warm clothing and sun tan lotion!

This "tour" exceeded all expectations. The crew was helpful, polite and patient. Have been on other whale watching vessels but they pale in comparison. Was not disappointed in the sightings and the pilot of the vessel knew exactly where to go for the ultimate experience. Also provided was overall education about whales, habitats, etc. That was quite enlightening and appreciated. Whales and dolphins were spectacular. Will definitely go again.

Great Cruise

We spotted two large gray whales right away and we followed them for almost half an hour. Then we were suddenly in the midst of hundreds of dolphins. They were leaping, swimming very close to our boat and surfing our wake. We also saw a group of sea lions squabbling over space on a buoy. Our captain was also a naturalist and provided a lot of interesting information. The other crew were friendly and helpful and the boat was clean and comfortable. Finally, with the limited number of passengers, I always had an unobstructed view right at the rail and I believe that everyone else did as well. This cruise will remain one of the highlights of my California visit.

Great second trip

This was our second trip in 2 years with Dana Wharf Sportfishing and Whale Watching and this second was even better than the first.- we saw 5 whales and numerous dolphins and sea lions - all in a couple of hours. What makes this company and Jack the skipper in particular, so good is the clear understanding and affinity with the sea creatures that you feel really part of the whole experience. A great trip for all ages , heartilly recommended!

Not What I Hoped For

I know it's not possible to guarantee whale sightings, and the captain did follow one whale because that's all that was in the area, but it was very hard to see the whale with all the other people standing by the edge of the boat. Other small boats in the area were spooking that whale so he barely showed, and certainly didn't show his tail. Also, the company switched me to a different time and different boat a few hours before the scheduled trip, after I paid to go out on the better trip, on the Catamaran. That was disappointing. Not sure if I would go with this company for future whale watching trips.

Fogged out but will return

The day started sunny and warm. Our grandchildren were so excited about the very good chance of seeing whales. However, a fog bank rolled in and they ended up being so bored they fell asleep! Dana Wharf gave us all free tickets for another day so we'll try again before the season is over. All in all we had a fun boat ride.
