Quite Pleased

I'm trying to get my land legs back as I'm typing this.

I managed to score a couple of really cheap advance tickets for Dana Wharf's whale watching tour last month. Two hours of cetacean-stalking 'n gawking on the Dana Pride for $10 a head! It wasn't indicated on their sales webpage, but I'm guessing the generous discount was a daylight-savings special.

We started by following the trail of a wayward gray whale going south for about 30-40 minutes. It went up to breathe every once in a while but we were never able to get more than 1/4 mile close to it. I got a "Screw you guys, I wanna get to Mexico ASAP!" vibe from the giant beast. That's OK, I understand.

Dana Pride's boat commander guy finally gave up and steered us toward a distant pod of dolphins. The host guy on the lower deck kept reassuring us that we would see "thousands" of dolphins (the company guarantees a sighting ya know, or your next visit's free). I wouldn't say there were thousands, but there were definitely a bunch of dolphins leaping and following us north for the majority of the tour. Quite a sight to behold; I just wished that southern California seawater were clear blue instead of murky green.

After that, we made a quick stop at a green buoy convered with photogenic sea lions and returned to the harbor. There was a tip jar for the hosts next to the exit and a discount coupon for a future trip.

The last time I had taken this tour was during a field trip back when I was a kid, and I didn't see anything more than a *very* distant whale tail. I'm very glad I got much more out of the tour this time around. Your experience will most likely vary. I'm sure there have been other excursions where whales have come up close to the boats. Don't expect too much and you'll leave satisfied.

Exciting but little seasick

Arrived late and kindly they rebooked us to the next boat even though the ongoing festival (high season) , luckily watched a couple of whales (then mostly we followed them along the coast, are we actually harrassing whales?). Nobody prevented us from seasickness, not very rough but several passengers got sick. Personnel on board was very kind though. I highly recommend it but with a word of caution, not for the faint of heart.

We saw Dolphins - a lot of Dolphins!

There is no doubt we feel lucky to have seen a magnificent "super-pod" of dolphins - literally many, many hundreds of them jumping, leaping, and "walking" on their tails. Even the baby dolphins kept us rivited to the scene. Wow!

Our Captain followed the pod for several miles and for what seemed like an hour, keeping us entertained with interesting facts.

Granted, there are never any guarantees you'll see anything, but today it was unforgettable.

What a trip!

Good Trip - One Whale, Many Dolphins

The trip was very good. We only got to see one whale lift its tail out of the water. The other whales were a little harder to spot. We could typically only see its footprint.

The lack of whales was surpassed by the abundance of dolphins. The boat captain steered the boat to an area that had a vast amount of dolphins. Being in the front of the ship provided the best experience for the viewing of the dolphins. You could look down the bow as see the dolphins in the water as the swam along the ship and jumped out of the water.

I would definitely do this again next whale watching season.

A preventable disaster

Our whale watching was cancelled due to wind and rescheduled for the next day. We arrived with great expectations but what we got was sick due to the rough waters reculting from continued wind. Granted the wind was much lighter than the day before but cauised problems even at the lower force. We all took a dramamine just in case. In hind sight we may have been better served by taking more. Four of our group vomited violently while the rest of the group turned green. Not a single whale was spotted. The tour group gave us vouchers to some aback and try again free of charge which would have sufficed if we lived near by but we don't and so we spent our money for nothing.

Too long

the boat was too slow and upon arrival we had only but 15 minutes to wait for the whales to surface. another boat, same category, passed us on the way out and loitered around the whales much longer than we did. frankly not worth the price.

The fact that we saw two whales, and one was jumping out of the water made our experience unforgettable! The boat was on time, and the captain knew a lot about the whales. Would totally do that again!
