We took two tours and in the first one we seen a mega pod of dolphins, thousand of them all around the boat. On the second tour we had whales on the left and dolphins on the right. It was a very enjoyable time at sea and we are looking forward to more of these trips.

I had my doubts that we would actually see any whales and thought at least we would get a great sunset. I was wrong we encountered 3 whales and it was very impressive trailing the whales. I am sure there are times where the sightings are nil but I would still recommend the cruise. The crew is helpful and have some knowledge of sealife.

Always a joy.....

I've been on this tour before and had a great time. The first time we saw no whales, in fact you can't count on seeing whales. Often you do see them, but not always. This time we saw a gray whale and a huge pod of dolphins. It was magical. No matter what sea life you are fortunate enough to see, this is a great experience and a wonderful way to get another perspective on the area.

Good activity for familes and guests

Excellent activity for your kids (mine were age 6 and 10); (but you may want to take dramamine for motion sickness if you or kids tend toward that -- we did and I think it helped my little one to enjoy it more). The boat had a naturalist aboard which was very helpful as she showed pictures of dolphins and whales found in this part of California. It's chilly on the ocean, so bring a light jacket or sweatshirt. Binoculars were nice to have as were a couple of drinks and lite snacks for kids (though they do sell them on board also). The 25 min ride out to the deeper part was a bit boring for my kids, but we got to see a pod of 100+ dolphins playing and jumping which took the boredom right out! Recommendation: Arrive a bit early if you get anxious about standing in lines to check in; although they handled it well. Many people had to stand the entire trip, so if you or your guests cannot stand, get in the dockside waiting line early and go on the "upper" level where there is booth-like seating.

Great Experience - Fun for the Kids

We've done these whale watching trips before, but never with the kids. Although we didn't see any whales, we saw about 100 dolphins playing, jumping and having fun with each other. We think that experience was even better than just following one whale. My boys loved it and we took the grandparents too, who said, "Wow, this trip was well worth the money!" Since we didn't see any whales, we got our tickets back for $10 off a future whale or fishing trip. Great guarantee program! Would recommend this trip for sure.

1/2 Day Fishing Trip
Sat, Feb 13, 10   12:00 PM MikeMyers Male 50-59 Local Family With Children
My party of seven people had a good time. Our customer service experience was superb; we were contacted by phone a couple of times to inform us that the fish were not biting, and that we could change our reservations at no additional charge if any other date would be preferred.

We ended up changing our reservations, and the fish were still not biting the day we ultimately went out. With seven anglers fishing constantly for four hours, we should have netted more than two small fish total, hardly worth keeping.

But the trip itself, with the crew's help in putting on bait, and untangling fishing lines, etc... went well. I would have been more impressed if the captain of the ship had some kind of depth monitoring system that could spot large pools of fish -- it seemed that we changed locations often to find fish, but our location changes were based on "hope" rather than scientific methods. The entire ship's fish catch was minimal, and there were about 25 people aboard. I did expect more opportunity for more fish for everyone. I have gone fishing before where the entire ship's customers all caught fish, with many catching the day's limit. This was not the case on the day of our trip.

I will recommend this trip to others. This was an excellent way to spend a sunny afternoon at sea.

We had a nice outing with a very a good company seeing sea lions and dolphins. Unfortunately, no whales. However, the company made it clear that we may or may not see whales before we purchased tickets.

Even in the absence of whales it was a good trip.

Enjoyable. Did not see any whales, saw dolphins and sea lions. Got a "whale check" to come back for free. Too bad we live out of country, but will try to get back one day, since there is no expiry date on the whale checks.

twilight squid fishing

Not for those with a weak stomach. I saw a lot more vomit than squid, and the small children suffered dearly with the cold and the sea sickness.

Tail End of Storm Yields Creepy Catch

It was pouring down rain on the drive down to the dock but we brought rain gear so no problem. The folks at the counter were very helpful processing our reservation and getting our rental gear.

By the time we boarded the Clemente, the rain had stopped and the clouds were thinning out. The captain and crew were very considerate and helpful, explaining what to expect and even helping my teenage daughters rig up for giant squid. On the ride out, the 4 to 5 foot swells were pitching the boat pretty vigorously. Half a dozen people or so looked pretty green!

Eleven squid up to 40 lbs. were boated, then we headed in as a moderate wind was threatening to turn nasty. The exiting storm revealed a crystal clear view of the coast accented with all the lights and framed by the stars from Newport all the way down past San Clemente. It was worth the money just for the gorgeous view.

Unfortunately, the whole trip was marred by someone who stole my brother-in-laws' squid fillets! I guess someone who probably didn't catch anything felt like they needed to bring something back by stealing someone else's catch. I think someone was also stealing those large squid jigs on the way back as well...maybe the same? Watch your gear closely folks!

Good event to bring your teenagers

As a Mom I didn't know what to expect. I brought 3 teens with me. The deck hands got me situated and the boys did well. We all caught loads of Humboldt squid even though it was one of their slower nights. They then cut them up into filets for us to take home. The boys want to go again!

Giant Humboldt Squid Bite Wide Open..........
Mon, Feb 1, 10   5:30 PM TaperSteve Male 20-29 Local Family With Children
Went 2-1-10 after hearing about it on FNN and the news Monday morning. You gotta go. Its the best $25 ive spent in a long time. Boat was full with 55 anxious anglers. Went out maybe a mile or 2. There were about 6-10 other boats all in the same area we went to. Captain said we are metering lots of squid, time to fish! Dropped my squid jig down, down, and down some more. "Where are they I thought?" as everyone lowered and lowered their jigs deeper and deeper into the water. Then about 2 minutes in, BAM! Then another one, and another. In less than 5 mins everyone on the boat was battling one of these monsters! Gaff! Gaff! Gaff! thats all I heard. As soon as they started biting they moved up to the surface. Right when you would drop the jig in the water, BAM! another one. Squid on! After about an hour of fishing and 3 Giant Squid later the captain announced, "Please dont drop anymore lines in the water". He was sure to ask if everyone caught what they wanted and that everyone caught atleast one squid. The captain explained that with so many anglers on board and so many squid being caught if we had fished any longer we would not get back to dock until after midnight. They have to clean all the squid before returning to the dock. It did end up taking longer for the crew to clean all the squid then it did to catch them. That though was a show all in its own. The unofficial count was around 375 for the boat. Im sure I coulda caught more but I was also helping my 9 year old daughter and my wife. All together we caught 7. Anyone who is even considering going has got to go while it last. The crew and captain were really nice and helpful as were the people in the shop. Hope I can go again later this week if theyre still biting..........
