Short But Bitter Sweet

The trip was reasonably priced. The staff were helpful and pleasant to fish with. We had a nice time, but unfortunately we went on a slow day and were unable to take any fish home. We will go again after March 1st.

Great 89th birthday gift

It was my father's 89th birthday, he had never been on the ocean and eager to see Whales and Dolphins. While we did not see a whale, we had the adventure of our lifetime as the captain spotted a large group of dolphin of all ages. They stayed close to our boat for what seemed like and hour. It was an incredible experience for my father as well as my 19th year old son. We had an amazing time!

Even though we didn't see any whales, we did see a very large pod of dolphins out and about.....seemed like thousands of them! It felt great being out on the water and the captain gave a nice narration of all that was going on around us, especially of the type of dolphins we were seeing. We had a great time and it was very relaxing!

Great fishing, lots of fish caught, the weather was warm, clear, seas were calm and blue skys. We also were able to see whales and dalphins, along with sea birds and sea lions. Just a fantastic trip and well worth doing often.

Joyful and eventful day!
1/2 Priced Whale Watch (past event)

We were so lucky to go out for the day with such a hospitable boat crew and captain. Not only to us as passengers, but more importantly to the sea life that was presented before us. Such respect for our wildlife!

We were very lucky to watch a gray whale breach 3 times and fluke a good handful of times. The commom dolphin mega pod was spectacular as well.

A day we won't forget.

Thank you!

best kind of learning for a kid -- and a blast
Sun, Jan 30, 11   12:45 PM jastern949 Male 40-49 Local Other
this is a fun trip. and even tho' we caught no fish that day, and it rained miserably, we still had a blast. it was really good to go on sunday for the 12:30 trip where they expect and accomodate children and beginners.

also, it was so obviously healthy for my kid to get out of the world of memorization (school, tutoring) and obligations (do your homework, eat your veggies) etc, and simply into a world of authentic, natural learning -- experiential learning -- just BEING in it.. learning to DO. such as catch anchovies from underneath, set them on a hook, how to dress for inclement weather, what to bring for food, how to stay balanced on a boat that is rocking, how to interact with strangers (other people fishing and their kids), how to tell the difference between a whale, a sea lion and a dolphin (all of which he saw).. these things are priceless, and he can't get anything like this in school. frankly, i think school SHOULD be like this.

i liked that the captain took the time to call the children down onto the boat in a separate group beforehand to give them a pre- orientation. this was neat. and his explanation was kind and patient. however, it could have been simplified. when he got into knots and how to wire the rod with weight and hook in several various configurations it was too complicated, and i think the children did not follow it (i know i didn't). but it didn't matter because his crew was helpful all day long with hooks, weights, bait, etc. In fact, i think his initial talk could simply have been limited to safety concerns and the basics of handling the rod/reel (which he did cover nicely).

when it rained, i was surprised to see we were the only 2 who had brought raincoats/slickers. everyone else was soaked and miserable (tho' no one complained). my recommendation: consider checking the weather, and bringing raincoats if rain is a possibility, as well as a backpack with extra food, sunscreen, hats/sunglasses, aspirin, sandwiches and grub, and even a towel -- whatever you need for the day. you'll be glad you did.

one more shout out to the great captain and crew -- they were a blast, quite professional, and very friendly and helpful. it was a great day, thanks guys.

My kids LOVED the trip!

While we didn't get lucky enough to see a whale, we did see more dolphins than we could count, along with quite a few baby dolphins. My kids, ages 9 & 5, were thrilled to see the animals in the wild and can't stop talking about the experience. The staff was friendly and informative. We will definitely return.

Good times had by all.

The boat ride was excellent. Not too choppy. I have been on smaller boats and felt nautilus. They did everything in their power to find whales, and provided us with info on the species. We saw two whales and some other sea life. Very fun, especially, for the reasonable price. Our group consisted of graduate students from across the country that are currently going to school in California. We found Dana Point to be a beautiful area worth visiting as well.

This is something to share with your family. My kids (6 & 2 yrs) loved watching the dolphins leap in and out the water, see the whales & watching a sea lion swim around. This was our 2nd time to go on Dana Wharf's Tour and it's been great both times. A must see!
