Great crew, slow fishing, pelicans suck
Wed, Aug 24, 11   10:00 AM JaredCBell Male 20-29 Local Individual
My fishing time was 10am to 3pm. Typical half day. We left at about 1020 on the Sum Fun boat, stopped to get the live bait, arrived at our first fishing spot at a little after 11. But aside from the late start, the captain also fished later than we were supposed to which was nice.

Crew was VERY helpful with everyone, didnt seem to get annoyed either especially with all the kids on board. They pushed the boat almost to its max (60 people) with 54. But amazingly, I only got crossed once and was able to fish almost the entire time. I hooked up TWO pelicans at once, crew member ran over and got them off no problem. After that it was a sculpin fest and they were running around helping everyone get them off their lines. My only complaint is that we sat on dead spots for a bit longer than I would have liked. It was extremely slow fishing as it was and I think we should have moved around a bit more. But Im not a captain and im not sure exactly how they decide where, when and what spots to go to.

Anyways, only caught two fish, neither of them keepers, hooked into something MASSIVE though which was fun to pull up. It swam down and got caught under a rock but luckily my 65lb braid was able to pull it up. Half way up to the boat, it got off the hook. Good experiences all around and I learned a lot as this was my first party boat.

Tips:

1) Bring Dramamine if you get motion sickness at all. The boats out there really rock

2) the heavier weight the better. I was using 4oz pyramid with a double dropper loop setup and with the strong current was able to stay almost right in front of me, while everyone else was drifting around.

3) Cast or drop when no pelicans are by your bait. They were extremely annoying stealing everyones bait and getting tangled. The big weight helps the bait get down before they dive for it as well.

4) 15-20 line is all you need. I had 65lb braid to a 20lb fluoro top shot. This worked really well ripping through the kelp beds.

5) Smaller live bait the more fish you will catch. You can go big and try to get bigger fish but if you want more of an enjoyable experience, stick with the small sardines or anchovies. The ticket our day was squid strips though.

6) if you are an experienced angler, arrive a little early so you can get a spot you want on the boat. I was first in line and got the spot I wanted. This is also key for pre-launch. I was flipping a swim bait by the docks waiting for people to load on to the boat. I got slammed by a huge barracuda right there. Wasnt able to set the hook though but theres a lot of fish in that area. Just a little warmup fun.

The trip was handled with professionalism and enthusiasm. We actally had the opportunity to see two whales and the captain tried very hard to posiiton the vessel so we had photo opportuntiies. I was able to get some excellent photos of the whale and very much enjoyed seeing the dolphins and sea lion.

The crew did a wonderful job of getting you off on time and checking on the safety of the passengers. Seeing the whales and dolphins was spectacular. The crew was very informative about marine life and the ocean. Definitely will recommend this adventure.

The icing on the cake for your trip to Dana Point!

The tour really delivered the goods, with dolphins in abundance and many blue whale sightings. The captain's narration was excellent as well. What better way to spend a part of your day during your visit to beautiful Dana Point. The boat is new, clean, and comfortable. Not only was the crew friendly, but so were the other guests on board; I guess having a really good experience brings out the best in people.

In summation, take this trip, you won't be disappointed. The 1/2 price special offered on Tuesdays (the day I went) made it extra sweet.

Life Affirming Experience!

From the initial journey out to open waters, the deck of the Catamaran put us hovering just above the water.. It was moderately windy, so the waves heaved us up and frequently dropped us a good 5-6 meters to be met with sprays. The Captain expertly guided us to close proximity with first a couple of seals, then a few blue whales coming up for air.. He was able to spot and track them with extreme accuracy, as well as, time their surfacing intervals (we came back when they resurfaced). We took a side excursion to play with a couple hundred dolphins. They DID dance and play in a way you would never experience at an aquarium or Sea World. Imagine a couple hundred of them leaping in a row.. row after row, in sync. We then returned to the spot the surfacing whales.. In the wild and open waters.. we were unexpectedly became aware of the amazing and precious life that surrounds us. Seeing the blue whales and it's majestic body coming out of the water.. should make anyone humble and speachless!

There used to be a sign on 5 Frwy south showing Street of the Golden Lantern. Was looking for it, got lost, 'cause the sign is gone. We were told to be there by 1:30 for a 2 sail and catamaran didn't show up until 2. A waste of 30 minutes standing around

We had a fabulous time on this trip! We were fortunate enough to enjoy watching a pod of about 20 dolphins (including young ones) as they swam both sides of the catamaran as well as underneath us! We then discovered two blue whales and loved going between the two as each of them surfaced. It was a magical day and would highly recommend this amazing experience.

Fantastic to see Whales and Dolphins

This was our second time on the 12noon Tuesday cruise Aug 23rd. The first time, July 19 12noon, the captains we had were fantastic with the patrons and narrated quite a bit. Very informative and entertaining. This time we had different captains who did locate whales and dolphins but could have been a bit more narrative. Kind of nonchalant compared to the first trip. However, great job to them all for locating whales, dolphins and sea lions and keeping all of us safe.

Thank you!

A Great Birthday Event
Whale and Dolphin Watching Adventure Tour
Sun, Aug 21, 11   6:00 PM brihan Male 40-49 Local Family With Children
To get away from the usual birthday bbq we decided on a family adventure to celebrate mom's 76th.

We had 12 people ages 10 to 96 and EVERYONE had a great time. The boat (Dana Pride) was very clean and although it looked like a very long line of people getting on the boat there was plenty of room.

The crew was great as Captain Mike found many pods of playful dolphins and Betsy tended to all the passengers and made sure everyone was having a good time. She made the trip very special. Thanks Betsy!!

We all got off the boat wondering why we had not done this long ago and I'm sure we will be back for another trip.

Make sure you stop by Turk's before and/or after the trip for cocktails and a bite to eat.

I really had my heart on seeing whales that day but I didn't. It was breath taking watching the two different types of dolphins playing. The weather was great and the captain was very informative with information he was sharing.

only minimal efforts
Sun, Aug 21, 11   2:00 PM abausch Male 40-49 International Tourist(s) Family With Children
the 2 hour tirp was much more an 1 hour trip!!

the trips are scheduled in such a way, that per default they are always much shorter than promised - the maximal possible time on the sea is 1,5 hours....!!

this is serious cheating, but probable the wording in the web is legally ok....

the captian was nice and fun, the boat was fast and in a good shape, yet the captain did not really go the extra mile to really find whales or any intersting wildlife.... certainly there is luck in it, yet a bit more effort and time would go a long way...
