Best Whale watching in So Cal!!!

I live in Carlsbad and usually take visitors on whale watching out of San Diego. They were not offering whale watching on Saturday 11/26, so I found one in Dana Point. It was AWESOME! The harbor is much smaller, so parking is easier, We were on the open ocean in 5 minutes and spotted a grey whale 10 minutes after leaving the dock! They later brought the boat right in the middle of a school of about 20 dolphins with babies! The guides were extremely knowledgable about the whales, dolphins and local birds. HIGHLY recommend Dana Wharf tour!!

Between whale watching season......

Went whale watching between seasons so expectations for seeing a whale were not high so of course did not see a whale. The captain of the boat spotted a large pod of dolphins and did a good job keeping the group entertained by traveling with the pod for about 45 minutes. Captain provided good commentary as we "mingled" with the dolphins. Will go back during season to see whales.

My 7 year old granddaughter said it was best week of her life (then she added - "in November') We saw thousands of dolphins. Very exciting - no whales but no complaints!

That's the gamble.

I am a leader of a youth group and we where in the process of biking down to Oceanside. I thought it would be fun to take them whale watching as a break from biking. It was very exciting when we left the harbor. Right away we saw bottle nose dolphins, but that is where the excitement ended until the very end. We came across a pod of Rizo dolphins. This was kind of cool, but not enough to change the attitude of the boys. They where really hoping to see a whale or two. I told them that it was at the end of the season and that 's the gamble you take. I would encourage others to take the same gamble, but do it earlier in the season.

Thanks for the adventure.

Nice boat ride, professional and knowledgeable staff. Saw dolphins before leaving the harbor, then unfortunately not much until the end of the trip. But, we came upon a large pod of rizzos...maybe 50+...it was really amazing. They swam with us for a while - got lots of great pics and video. Kids of all ages enjoyed it - from 5 to 15 - plus the adults. It was a great afternoon. I'd do it again - especially on 1/2 price Tuesdays.

Even though we just saw a glimpse of 2 whales, we saw a lot of Dolphins and they really entertained us. The captain went out of his way (extra 30 mins) to look for signs of other whales. It was a cloudy and chilly day, but we really enjoyed a lot!!

It's getting late in the season, so I didn't have my hopes up on spotting whales. It seemed the crew had that attitude as well. The weather was great, the catamaran handled the chop well and it was a good day on the ocean, even if we didn't spot anything. We'll be back to try again, thanks to the guarantee and free return offer.

Had a good time, boat was clean and appears well maintained, crew was friendly and knowledgable. Saw Sea Lions and at least two types of dolphins but no whales in mid-November. We will be back!

Dolphin watching, not whale watching
Whale and Dolphin Watching Adventure Tour

The water was calm and we had a clear sky; the ride to the ocean was full of excitement and expectation to see whales up close and personal. Time passed by, we saw disturbance on the surface of the water and few fins peeked out, surely some playful dolphins surrounded our boat and started showing off their diving skills. After the dolphin encounter, both kids and adults were more eager to see whales. However, as the boat continued to ride along, no signs of any sea creatures appeared in our visual field. Although the captain announced possible activity under the water, the tour arrived back at the dock disappointed. Personally, I have seen dolphins swam next to the surfers at the Crystal Cove of Newport Beach, FOR FREE. I specifically purchased the tickets to see whales, but instead I settled for dolphins.

Worth the Money

Purchase of tickets was quick and simple. Location was easy to find, clean, neat docks. Boarding was quick and easy. Blue Whales spotted within ten minutes of heading out to open water. Three quarters of cruise was spent whale watching and managed to see a pod of Risso dolphins too. A clear beautiful day. Informative staff, and most importantly...not too crowded. Plenty of room to move about and get those saught after pictures. The catamaran is a smoother ride however, if you are prone to motion sickness think about taking some Dramamine an hour prior to departure. We had a fabulous time and have already recommended this trip to others.

We were very fortunate to see two blue whales almost immediately after clearing the jetties. The captain tagged along with them for over an hour, allowing for many sitings. On the way back to the harbor, we came across some Risso's dolphins...a first for me. The crew did a wonderful job making sure everyone knew where to look and when as well as provide lots of interesting facts on what we were seeing. My grandchildren and I had a wonderful time.

These guys do know there stuff, as nature was tough to find but they tracked a blue whale and I was able to see the largest mammal with my girl. Then we saw 100's, yes hundreds of dolphins up close. What a way to spend 2 hours on the ocean.

I enjoyed the professionalism of the staff. The captain (driver) was very informative about the sea life and narrated this during our travel. There were numerous dolphins sitings...dolphins diving in sequence, often 3 to four at a time and as many as a group of about 10 or more. There were even baby dolphins. The dolphins came alongside the boat and even had fun chasing the boat as we sped off. It was charming and entertaining. I saw flying fish and toward the end a blue whale. What an amazing day.

Hmmm... easy and free parking... a two hour cruise along the southern california shore... a nice boat with clean bathrooms and full bar/food capability, inside and outside sitting/standing options.. nice crew AND we saw 100s of dolphins and AND a BLUE WHALE ... all that for 1/2 price (because I went on a Tuesday) on an already lower then other companies cost... oh and a guarantee of a free ticket for another cruise if you dont see anything... not sure how you can really beat that value for your money...... I enjoyed it so much I came off the 12-2 cruise and rebought another ticket for another trip out that same day !
