very fun but slighty frustrating

This was our (my husband and I) first fishing trip on the ocean. We went in the morning when my husband thought the fishing would be better. It wasn't as cold on the ocean as we thought it would be, which was nice. My husband and I both haven't been fishing for years and we didn't really know what to expect. It was a little frustrating on our part just not knowing what to do at all. (The reels we used were top of the line and brand new last time I fished...) For the first part of the trip, we were on the side of the boat because it was less crowded. (There were approx 25 other people with us). My line got incredibly tangled and we weren't catching anything, while other people around us seemed to be reeling them up nonstop. When my line was tangled, we had to wait about 10 mins for one of the guys to come over and fix it. He told us we should fish off the back of the boat but there never seemed to be an open spot. When we made our way over, the crew had (what appeared to be) regulars move out of the way so we could try to catch something. We caught and released many fish after that, but it was still crowded. Every time we got stuck in kelp, the crew helped us, and so did the people who had done this before. Their advice helped a lot.

At first, we got conflicting advice on our fishing lines. We were told to fish off the bottom using the weights that came with the hooks, then we were told to take the weights off and aim the bait towards the kelp. (The second option worked better).

We caught and kept 1 fish that was large enough, but we never got it cleaned and unfortunately left it behind because we were from out of town and didn't know what we'd do with it or how/where we'd cook it. If the company had an option for things like that we didn't know about it and it was never mentioned.

Overall, it was a lot of fun and something I'm sure we'll do again. The crew was really knowledgeable and friendly, even though there weren't enough of them to go around for a brief time. The price we paid was worth it. It was great to watch the seals circle the boat and even steal fish right from our hooks. Watching the crew clean the fish was pretty cool too. The experience as a whole was great, there was too much fun stuff to let the minor let downs ruin it. Expect to come back covered in fish scales. :)

Even though we did not see whale (seems we missed the migration period by a week or two), we saw hundreds of dolphins and a large group of sea lions. Fun day out with family. Already planning another trip soon!

An Enjoyable Short Excursion

We are repeat customers for the two-hour boat trips on the Dana Pride - it's something we treat ourselves to whenever we have out-of-town friends and family visiting, and no one ever seems to get tired of it. There are almost always at least dolphin sightings, even if the whales are not around, and we have had memorable experiences in the center of huge pods of dolphins AND whales AND bird feeding frenzies. Always fun.

This is a whale of a show!

I went on this whale watch last September. It was so fantastic (saw Blue Whales, Fin Whales and dolphins) that I took relatives on it this May. Once again, we saw lots of dolphins, who surfed with the boat, and the first sighting for the season of a Blue Whale and the 35-foot long baby. Quite exciting. I would recommend this to anyone, who enjoys wildlife, and doesn't get seasick. It can be quite choppy. Take layers of clothes, because it can be 15 degrees colder on the water. I think the 2-4 pm time is the best. The pilot finds the whales on the earlier whale trip. No meal is interrupted on the 2-4 pm slot. It can be colder and sun is lower on the 4-6 slot.

We saw four gray whales, several pods of dolphins, seals and beautiful views. The captain provided lots of interesting facts and did a wonderful job of navigating the beautiful coastline. The catamaran was spacious and made for a smooth ride.

Different venue than I thought

My mistake. I thought I had reserved the Dana Point location at the Institute at the other end of the pier. Fortunately we arrived early enough to still participate as scheduled. No problem with electronic check-in. The crew were very pleasant & professional. Would recommend to all.

Plenty of dolphins.... but no whales! However, we were offered a ticket for another try, but unfortunately, couldn't make that date. We thought that was very fair!
