1/2 day trip spent most time boating around
Mon, Jul 14, 14   12:00 PM schroederrc Male 40-49 Local Family Without Children
1/2 day trip spent most time boating around trying to find yellow fin tuna, with very little fishing. Finally towards the end of the day, the captain found some and several were landed. Lucky that saved the day. I would have complained otherwise as 1/2 day fishing trip should be at least 3 to 3.5 hours of fishing not approx. 1 hour.

Awesome Time Again

was a great time, just as I remember from the last time I went, there are some that get overly aggressive and could hurt someone but it is what it is

I had a great time caught one fish my dad caught two. The crew was very professional and helpful. Wish I would have brought more cash to give them a nicer tip.

Dana Wharf never fails to deliver a great trip!!

Captain Todd and his crew did a fantastic job on this 8-hr adventure despite the choppy swell and "between whale season" conditions! They know their local waters and are informed about the animals that live in them or migrate through. They always find something, and I would recommend using them for whale and dolphin watching unreservedly.

Great boat ride but not whales
Tue, Jun 24, 14   2:00 PM Ledwithja30 Male 40-49 Domestic Tourist(s) Family Without Children
The crew were very nice. Unfortunately we did not see any whales during our 2 hour boat ride. Dana Wharf gave us whale passes to sign up for another boat ride. No expiration. We came from NJ and stayed in Carlsbad, CA. The weather was great. We plan to return. When we do we will schedule to go on another boat ride. Whale season is from July to Sept. We went end of June. A bit early. Better luck next time. I still highly recommend going. Go during the season.

Great trip even without any whales!

The boat left right on time, was very clean and the crew very friendly and informative. Since we didn't see any whales, we got a whale watch ticket for another trip for free anytime. Also, the food from the grille is fantastic - all freshly made!! There is plenty of seating and/or places to stand along the railing, so it didn't feel too crowded.

This was our (my husband and I) first fishing trip on the ocean. We went in the morning when my husband thought the fishing would be better. It wasn't as cold on the ocean as we thought it would be, which was nice. My husband and I both haven't been fishing for years and we didn't really know what to expect. It was a little frustrating on our part just not knowing what to do at all. (The reels we used were top of the line and brand new last time I fished...) For the first part of the trip, we were on the side of the boat because it was less crowded. (There were approx 25 other people with us). My line got incredibly tangled and we weren't catching anything, while other people around us seemed to be reeling them up nonstop. When my line was tangled, we had to wait about 10 mins for one of the guys to come over and fix it. He told us we should fish off the back of the boat but there never seemed to be an open spot. When we made our way over, the crew had (what appeared to be) regulars move out of the way so we could try to catch something. We caught and released many fish after that, but it was still crowded. Every time we got stuck in kelp, the crew helped us, and so did the people who had done this before. Their advice helped a lot.

At first, we got conflicting advice on our fishing lines. We were told to fish off the bottom using the weights that came with the hooks, then we were told to take the weights off and aim the bait towards the kelp. (The second option worked better).

We caught and kept 1 fish that was large enough, but we never got it cleaned and unfortunately left it behind because we were from out of town and didn't know what we'd do with it or how/where we'd cook it. If the company had an option for things like that we didn't know about it and it was never mentioned.

Overall, it was a lot of fun and something I'm sure we'll do again. The crew was really knowledgeable and friendly, even though there weren't enough of them to go around for a brief time. The price we paid was worth it. It was great to watch the seals circle the boat and even steal fish right from our hooks. Watching the crew clean the fish was pretty cool too. The experience as a whole was great, there was too much fun stuff to let the minor let downs ruin it. Expect to come back covered in fish scales. :)

Even though we did not see whale (seems we missed the migration period by a week or two), we saw hundreds of dolphins and a large group of sea lions. Fun day out with family. Already planning another trip soon!

An Enjoyable Short Excursion

We are repeat customers for the two-hour boat trips on the Dana Pride - it's something we treat ourselves to whenever we have out-of-town friends and family visiting, and no one ever seems to get tired of it. There are almost always at least dolphin sightings, even if the whales are not around, and we have had memorable experiences in the center of huge pods of dolphins AND whales AND bird feeding frenzies. Always fun.
