Fantastic Experience!

We were in Dana Point for over a week and the ocean mesmerized us. We were so excited to board the boat and head out on the open waters! We saw hundreds of dolphins, what an experience!! We had our 7 year old and 1 year old daughters. Both had a great experience. Unfortunately we did not see any whales on our trip but the other sea life was enough to make this experience memorable. The crew were helpful and had tons of great information.

Caught nothing ....not much crew help

We were given rental poles in the office that were a problem for the boys to use. Open spinners...they tangled constantly...The captain came down and saw them tangled once and said to the boys "Why the hell did you rent these polls if you don't know how to use them."

We used live bait that was say too big to catch anything. The only ones catching fish were using their own tackle. I would have purchased lures in the shop if someone had advised me to do it.

On the boat we were given instruction by the other fisherman not the crew.

After a snag once my son's line snapped and the crew member helping him walked away....so my son then had to run him down to replace his tackle.

At first we were yelled instructions to fish on the top above the kelp...and then later we were told to fish down deeper...without any instruction or help changing tackle.

Crew was friendly just unhelpful.

Galley was fine...good food pretty good service.

Three of us caught nothing.

The crew was friendly and helpful. However, we weren't brought to the best fishing sites. Many people on the boat did not reel in any fish, and those who did catch a few most often had to throw them back because they were too small.

We enjoyed our whale watching trip. the crew was very helpful and did a great job showing off the whales and dolphins. We saw four whales and several dolphins in all. My kids left the boat with great big smiles at seeing something that we had never seen before.

Loved it the first time, disappointed the second

I live in San Clemente and heard about the Whale Watching in Dana Point from a local friend, when my aunt came out for vacation I took her Whale Watching. This was in the middle of November so we didn't see any whales, however the boat crew was great and it was very nice and relaxing, well worth the money. So when my husband came home from deployment I thought I would take him and what better time to go then on Valentine's Day when the whether is great, not to mention it is right around whale season! Well it was nothing like I had expected and I kept actually apologizing to my husband. First off they put us on a fishing boat and we were packed like sardines, second there was really no where to sit, third I thought there would be a bar like area becuase there was on the first trip I had taken so my husband and I were wanting to order a rum and coke and it wasn't avalible on this fishing boat. I was so excited to bring my husband on this whale watching trip that I got him excited and by the end we just looked at one another and thought, "Never again", I just kept thinking about how different it was from my first trip and what a waste of money this trip was. On the bright side we did spot one whale in the distance, but no dolphins. Needless to say we will not be going again and we also talked our friends out of going because prior to my bad experience I was telling them they had to go. When we got back from that trip I informed them to not waste their money.

This is the second time we've gone Whale Watching with Dana Wharf. The first time was absolutely fabulous and we saw so many different kinds of marine mammals, two kinds of dolphins, two kinds of whales, and other marine mammals. The most recent was not as active but we did see dolphins which was worth the trip itself and we were compensated for not seeing any whales which very nice. It is a fun thing to do and well worth the money!

It was a very well done trip with a very competent crew. I only rated it less than enthusiastically recommended as we were not able to see any whales on our trip.

The Captain kept us on the fish, with the right bait and the right instruction to catch the most fish.

A Great experience.

Strategic boat position to facilitate whale watchg

The crew members presented a very informative dialogue on whale history. The captain always had a good view of the whales as the boat was always pointed toward whale location. Guests gravitated to side where whales were sighted. It was not always possible for all guests to have a look at the whales. If the boat had been strategically positioned, everyone could have had a better view.

Fun outing with the dolphins
Whale and Dolphin Watching Adventure Tour

We went on the $32 whale watching 2-hour tour. While we didn't spy any whales, we enjoyed playing with the dolphins on a fairly calm sea under sunny skies. The captain gave a nice commentary as we left the harbor and we enjoyed learning from him about sites on shores as well as the (unseen) sealife under us. He seemed genuinely disappointed that he couldn't make the whales appear. But we had a nice time and recommend this family friendly cruise. Some on our outing were rather seasick. Take Bonine or Dramamine even if you think you will not need it. Also sucking on mints while on the waves is helpful. You will need a hat or visor to enjoy the fresh air seating. Binoculars were very helpful.
