Chelsea Market Food Tour Review

My husband and I were in NY for a long weekend. We really enjoyed the food tour. Got a good lay of the land inside the market and went back after the tour to purchase some of the food we tasted. Our tour guide had a lot of interesting tid bits to share with the group, definitely worth it.

Darrell was such a great tour guide -- we have been on his tour several times and it never gets old. He knows something about everything (it seemed like). My mother is in her late 70's and she thoroughly enjoyed the tour also. You have to go on his tour! It's Great!!

We had a great experience on the Chelsea food tour. We learned a lot about the area and were able to try some delicious tastings. Our tour guide was Darrel and he was really engaging. He made a point to remember everyone's name and get everyone actively participating on the tour. Overall a five star experience.

My husband and I treated ourselves to a date without our 2 young children. We both appreciate delicious and unique foods. Our guide, Diana, was highly knowledgeable, very enthusiastic and we had a terrific time! We went home and bought gift certificates for our parents to go to a food tour and we are hoping they ask us to join them!

This was a very fun tour. The food was excellent and our tour guide, Darrell, was very knowledgable and personable. He made it so much fun. We are all former New Yorkers and were thrilled with the tour. It was great learning about the history of the area and what's happened in the last 15+ years to make it a totally different place than it was when we lived in NY.

This tour was awesome. Kurt Upton was our guide and we loved him. Super informative, super fun and the food was awesome. We are in our thirties and found this your right up ou alley. Lots of fun and entertaining. This isn't just for the retired. We highly recommend. If you can request a guide I highly recommend Kurt. Best of luck NYC!

Amazing Guide . . . Disappointing tastings

Our guide, Barri, was amazing! . . . she was knowledgeable, informative, warm and attentive to everyone in our group of 16. The tour in Chelsea Market was great . . . so much interesting history of the market itself and the proprietors of the various shops, which are so diverse and appetizing. The ambiance, colors, floating aromas wafting throughout the underground venue are so welcoming, as were the staffs of the shops we entered. Unfortunately, the tastings themselves, for the most part, were a bit disappointing and really didn't capture the culinary delights I was anticipating, except for the delectable and outrageous Dickson's Farmstand Meats . . . which blew me and our whole group away! You've got to see and taste this butcher's fantastic array of specialty meats for yourself.

After Chelsea Market, our guide Barri, took us up to the High Line for a brief 20 minute view and brought out its interesting history of days gone by when it was a railway delivering produce and supplies to purveyors along the route. The view of the Piers and the Hudson from up high, on that sunny windy day, were worth the hike. From there we went down to the Meat Packing District and learned about its seedy history and Barri's informative imagery was a delight. Her enthusiastic historical storytelling made the whole experience of bygone days come alive for us all. ( and she did this walking and standing tour with her leg in a brace, recuperating!)

The tour ended with a sit down tasting of a pasta dish in Macellaria Italian Restaurant, which was just "okay".

All in all though, the whole experience was quite an education and a delight in many ways and I'm truly glad I went. I've been to Chelsea Market and the High Line a few times before, but now when I go back I'll enjoy it so much more.
