Great guide, great food, sore feet!

The tour was terrific, both for relatively new residents of the area and for our out-of-town guests. The guide was friendly, enthusiastic, and knowledgeable. The food tastings were excellent and filling. We went back for dinner at one of the places a couple of nights later. Be warned, though, the tour is long and there is very little opportunity to sit down. So be prepared and take the chances to sit when you get them!

More history than food

Overall I enjoyed the tour, it was very informative, providing a historical overview of the area and highlighting current hotspots. But since the tour was specifically a "Food Tour" I expected a little more emphasis on the food culture and tastings. I would have appreciated more tasting stops as there was certainly enough time for them.

Okay but not great

I found that we heard more about the history of the area than the history of the food. The food tastings were excellent, but there weren't many of them. I can't believe the sparse food offerings for the cost of the tour (3 hours). I was also disappointed that we spent almost an hour walking around a park. If that entire section had been cut out, the tour would have been far better.

Our guide was very friendly and knowledgeable; food samples were delish, especially the first one from the Indian bakery and the last one from the Greek yogurt joint. And the gnocchi at the Italian joint, where we were seated and the chef actually came out and gave us the recipe for the delicious pasta! That, more than anything, really made the tour special. We also enjoyed the bits of music/culture history, such as the stop at Bob Dylan's former home. Two thumbs up from these Southern Californians!

Only nitpick: The peanut butter sandwiches, although delicious, weren't cut apart adequately and that sampling was a little difficult logistically since there was no place to sit down.

Recommend Different Tour

We took the Grenwich Village tour in 2004 and would recomend that tour over this tour. It was explained before we left that the tour was altered slightly because it was cold that day. The tour was very enjoyable despite the changes.

Thanks

I'm a native New Yorker and have already highly recommended this tour! Our guide was great and I learned much new info about soho and the village.

This was a fun tour! I liked everything that i sampled, very unique foods!!! Tour guide, Diane, was very informative and knew what she was talking about, but she was very much a pushy new-yorker, sometimes very anoying and other times beneficial on the streets of NY!!! Very fun, and adventerous!!!!!

more culture than food

We were lucky with the weather and so spent a wonderful sunny day exploring popular and lesser-known streets in the village/soho. the tour focused on the area's history related to architecture, music and immigrants. Although we sampled quite a few different kinds of food (all tasty and interesting), I felt somewhat unsatisfied because each sampling was no more than a bite or two, and we were usually standing on the street trying to keep out of other pedestrians' way while we ate and listened.

Bottom line: a good way to get to know the history and culture of this part of new york, but don't choose it solely for the food!

Underwhelmed--But Go See For Yourself

We expected to walk more and explore both the Village and SoHo. Our village tour focused mostly on MacDougal street and immediate environs and the SoHo part I think was when we crossed Houston street and walked couple short streets like Sullivan. We wanted to see more of the area and actually walk--there were so many streets to explore! After the tour we were able to walk on our own so the tour did help with our sense of direction. The food was OK at best save for a nice little morsel of smoked food. One Italian store in particular was spoken highly of and we went inside but we didn't get any food. People wanted to stop and buy something but we had to move on. I appreciated the tidbits of information we were offered about the area. I would advise to stay close to the leader so that you can hear everything, as sometimes the cars and trucks were louder than the voice. It was an interesting outing, and it seemed that most people loved it. However, don't be surprised if you want to stop and have lunch after the outing is over.
