My friend came to visit for the weekend and suggested we go whale watching. Well let me tell you, that was the best idea ever! This was my first ever whale watching trip and was so amazing I am looking forward to doing another one very, very soon! The narrator was superb...she was enthusiastic and knew everything there was to know about whales and their habits. We saw a ton of whales that afternoon and I took a ton of pictures. I would highly recommend Princess Monterey Whale Watching and would definitely choose them again on my next whale watching trip!

We saw several Humpback whales very up close and personal, before we even reached the designated spot. Then MANY of them right next to our boat, and one last one on the way back to the wharf. Right in front of Cannery Row, jumping up (breeching?) several times as we passed very close to it. This was so unbelievable and unforgettable!! Also, great crew and a well educated biologist guiding the tour. We went on the 9 AM trip and it was not crowded at all.

I've been on a dozen or so whale watches between the Atlantic and Pacific, and I was a big fan of Princess Monterey. To start, anyone planning a whale watch should understand that what you end up seeing is as much by chance as it is by skill of your tour guide. The real differentiation between whale watching trips is in the trip out, the boat accommodations, and the expertise/entertainment value of the guides.

THE TRIP OUT: I'm from the East Bay, and having braved 90 minutes or so of choppy water with minimal wildlife on a trip from San Francisco to the Farallon Islands, I can tell you that it was well worth the 60 minute drive to leave from Monterey. The distance to the whale feeding grounds was just under forty minutes, and there was all kinds of wildlife along the way: sea otters, sea lions, common dolphins, gulls, terns and pelagic birds, just to name a few. On our trip the waters were inordinately calm, which was a bonus - can't really speak as to how rough the water gets, but on that note,

THE ACCOMMODATIONS: were perfectly adequate. We were aboard the Princess, 100 ft long with a single deck for passengers, but with ample interior seating. The Greatland, their other vessel, is the same size, but has two decks and some outdoor seating. Either way, the boat was big enough to be stable in the sea swells, minimizing sea-sickness for our passengers. On top of that, the captain was adept at aligning the boat with the waves to keep the boat stable. Inside were restrooms, along with a few simple snacks, water, coffee and hot chocolate. Nothing extraordinary, just enough to keep you warm and stave off hunger when needed.

THE GUIDE: A good guide should be both educated and entertaining. Ours was both - she filled the travel time with a good amount of info about the Monterey Bay area and the wildlife, and all with a cheery demeanor. When we got to the whales, you could hear the excitement in her voice. Her passion and awe were evident at every sighting and behavior. Our guide was also astute at sighting the whales - even when there were four or five at different locations at one time. At the same time, she was also able to keep silent when not needed, allowing us all to take in the sights and sounds of our surroundings. It was a nice balance, and a sign of a true professional.

SUMMARY: Great experience. The guide was a pleasure, the ride was comfortable, and we got to see some great whales, all at a very competitive price. Would recommend them without a second thought.

Fun - not many whales, thought there would be more

I had fun on boat - crew was informative. The photo's on website led me to believe there were tons of whales - but me only saw 7-8 - which was still cool - most were far away - one came by boat. The photo's on website are from a local photographer and are re-cycled, I noticed. We had to hunt for whales. Photo's on web led me to believe there was a particular spot the whales would be. Still fun - just wish we would have seen more. No Orca's this trip - only one dolphin. Went on 9-6-14.

Thoroughly enjoyable activity. Travelled out about 15 miles to find the whales and it was an experience that we'll probably never have again. Excellent tour guide who made the trip fun and educational - a difficult mix to pull off! Would recommend this if you'd like to actually experience whales in the wild.

We have been on several whale watching outings on both coast and this is by far the best. There were whales all around. Plus other sea life. It is well worth going on Princess Monterey! Thanks to Benji.
