Three of us went on this tour, aboard the Greatland boat. The boat was reasonably large, but still subject to the waves, and we motored for about 45 minutes to get to the feeding ground, which caused some people to get seasick. Not much the tour company can do about waves, but they could emphasize the possibility more and maybe encourage people to take some anti-seasickness med. before departing (I like Dramamine, myself). Our group had no problem.

The boat seemed clean, there was a small snack bar with typical-looking offerings, so nothing enticing there. We brought water for ourselves. Viewing was pretty good, except that outside benches were in front of the windows, so an inside seat view was sometimes blocked.

The tour guide/naturalist was enthusiastic and personable. Too bad it was almost impossible to understand what she was saying over the loudspeaker.

But the whales! the whales! Any limitations or inconveniences were more than compensated by the sights of the whales--we had as many as six at a time, surfacing right around our boat, flipping their tails in the air, and really giving us a show. Everywhere on the horizon, you could see "blows" of misty air from their spouts. The naturalist had said before we left the dock that this would be the sight of a lifetime, and she was not wrong. You can't predict that kind of thing, but you're almost guaranteed to see something, and we also saw seals, lots of seabirds (for all us birders), and dolphins.

Be sure to take a windbreaker or jacket, and a camera with rapid-fire shooting, because it is almost impossible to time your shot to catch the whales as they surface and dive.

Whale of a trip!

We hit the jackpot! Perhaps a fluke, we were in the middle of more whales than I could begin to count. Our naturalist was outstanding; however, the PA system could use some work.

The operator should not apply the upper deck surcharge unless the trip is subscribed to near capacity. Once under way, the upper deck opened to all pax ... without charge. I was cheated out of $40.

The weather was perfect and the sea was fairly calm. The captain put the boat right in the middle of a feeding frenzy and we spotted more whales than I could count. Some were really close. I couldn't have asked for better results. It was a truly memorable experience.
