Revolutional War and Culture of New York

Karen was an outstanding guide. She knows the major and less well known historical details and how they impacted history very well. She also provided many visual aids and related them to current landmarks which was an intriguing aspect of the tour and one not usually included. She was flexible as we stopped to take pictures, ask questions and so on. I would enthusiastically recommend her as a guide who autographed her tour with excellence.

We had a wonderful experience with this tour! My husband, 18 year old son and I were first time tourists to NYC. We love history and really enjoyed the delightful stories and tour of lower Manhattan. We will take another tour from our guide again on our next trip to NYC.

Memorable tour of early NYC!
Fri, Mar 20  10:00 AM npcanderson Female 60-69 Domestic Tourist(s) Couple on a Date
The day was penetratingly cold, with snow on the way. Even with the weather and quite a bit of standing and listening to Karen, we both really enjoyed the choice of sites to view and their history. Karen is a wonderful story-teller and she kept her talk engaging all the way through. She has a good balance of historical facts with juicy stories to humanize those facts. We were impressed with the depth of her knowledge of her subject. She welcomed input from the tour participants and made everyone feel comfortable. Ideally for us, a little more walking would have been even better. But by the tour's end, we had a real sense of the layout and look of early New York. We will come back for the Civil War! Thanks and keep up your great organization, Karen!

A must when visiting New York!

I loved Karen's enthusiasm and knowledge of New York City before, during and after the Civil War. She pointed out important places as we walked lower Manhattan and shared historical events with us. If you are interested in American history, or you want to see more than the "glitz" of Time Square and the "glamor" of Broadway, this is definitely the tour to take!

I'd been wanting to take this tour for years, and am so glad I finally did. Karen's knowledge of NY history and culture was outstanding. The tour was highly informative and interesting while always engaging and amusing. As a former history teacher, I highly recommend this tour to other teachers and history buffs. The time flew by and our group was impressed with the anecdotes, stories, printed materials, and knowledge of landmarks. This will be well worth your time.

As a resident of the city, she is observant about the remaining details we can see today that bring the original city and it's history alive. The original research and stories made it wonderfully real and fun. The tour was filled mostly with the people of the Revolution and their thoughts and inter relationships and less on dates for this and that which made high school history so boring. In her presentation or better, discussion, dates only give a placeholder for the activities we call the American Revolution. Easy walking; the 2.5 hours went by quickly; excellent intelligent communicator. The tour was the highlight of our NYC visit.

Tour was very enthusiastic and had lots of information. Would have loved to have a little booklet of the paperwork tour guide would show us. Loved the true facts regarding the sons of the revolution. Loved the churches and their history!

our tour guide was very knowledgeable, she made the stories come alive as she showed us where many revolutionary war events took place. though it was very cold outside, and i think lower manhattan felt colder than other areas, we enjoyed the tour very much.

We are 3 adults from Toronto area. One loves American history and really enjoyed the tour. Our guide was knowledgeable, prepared and organized. Even those of us who are not history buffs learned something and enjoyed seeing the architecture. One note: even 35 degrees feels really cold if you're outside for 2.5 hours Dress very warmly.

A plethora of information!
Fri, Dec 26, 14   10:00 AM Sherrilsmith Female 50-59 Domestic Tourist(s) Family Without Children
Most people consider the Boston area when thinking about the important locations of the Revolutionary War, but this tour gives so much insight into the events of NYC prior, during, and after that war, which were just as crucial. There was so much information presented in the tour about the important role New York City played in the Revolutionary War and the decisions made by General George Washington from the tour guide, Karen, who knows it all. She knows her history as well as the current events in NYC so blends them well. One realizes that politics has not changed very much since then! She does a marvelous job answering any type of questions anyone has.

On the tour, you walk where history was made, which is surrounded by the present day Lower Manhattan. You gain a unique perspective by doing this. You also get a feel of what was occurring in NYC in the 1700's and what present day sites, like Central Park & Wall street were back then.

Be sure to wear comfortable shoes, and warm clothes in the winter. Also, be aware that the tour does not end where it begins. You will end within blocks of the Statue of Liberty ferry. You may need to eat lunch after the tour. There are nice restaurants on Stone Street right by where the tour ends, and Karen can recommend a few places on that street.

Best Tour Ever!

Our tour guide was wonderful. Not only did she know the history of the area in the Revolutionary War, she knew the area so well she could answer any questions we had about the area before and after the war. She seemed to know the history of every building we asked about. Best tour we have ever taken in NYC.
