Greg and Laura Lohse have been sailing tall ships together since 1988. They have sailed extensively throughout the Atlantic, Caribbean, Bahamas, Great Lakes and the North and South Pacific Oceans. For most of that time, their specialty has been working aboard tall ships and teaching seamanship and sailing skills to students of all ages and backgrounds.

The Lohses' chief desire on every cruise is to help each guest feel welcome, relaxed and free to enjoy their cruise by doing as much or as little on board as they wish. Their vast experience in teaching tall ship seamanship and navigation enables them to provide a rich learning adventure to all guests who wish to participate in the operation of their craft.

Their two schooners include the gaff-rigged 105' schooner the Alliance, and the 65' gaff topsail schooner the Serenity. Both boats give you the opportunity to explore the Chesapeake Bay tidewaters!

For those who love history, yearn for romance, or have dreamed of experiencing a true sailing adventure, your ship has just come in!

A Sail Into History
Fri, Oct 31, 14  2:00 PM Male 60-69 Domestic Tourist(s) Group of Friends
Attended: Yorktown Sightseeing Day Sails
We sailed on a replica of the 18th Century Schooner, Alliance. It took us from Historic Yorktown down the York Tidal Estuary to where it meets Chesapeake Bay. The wind was strong and consistent enough to allow use of the sails for the entire trip. Passengers were allowed to assist crew in "hoisting the sails." One sail rigging is suitable for help by kids. The crew was informative, courteous and professional. They shared knowledge about the sailing ships of the time, sights along the route of the trip, and history of the area.

Simple food and beverages (sandwiches, chips, beer, wine and soda) is available for purchase. You may bring your own water on board. If you get chilly, the galley has some minimal seating. A couple was actually married on the cruise, which was a big surprise. It was late October, so not too much wildlife on the Estuary, except some pelicans. The last highlight was the crew shooting off a replica of a small 18th Century cannon on the Alliance, in honor of the newlyweds.

All in all, a very good trip for the price.

This is not one of those cruises that takes you miles and mile away from land but that doesnt take away from the beauty or the experience. The scenery is amazing and the crew is very knowledgeable about the boat and the local area. Its hard to describe, this is one of those things you have to experience to understand. This was a true breathtaking experience.

We booked the cruise for Saturday, October 25th at 2:00, and it awesome. Beatiful weather, and the cruise was awesome. The crew made everyone feel comfortable, when the got some of the younger passengers, to help with getting the sails up, so we could get in the wind and sail. The crew was very informative on the Battle of Yorktown, and all of the happenings in 1781. It was an experience we will never forget, and it is something we will do again, in the future.

The crew was fantastic and very professional. We sat at the helm and chatted with the Captain the entire ride. He has been sailing professionally for over 40 years and we loved listening to all his stories of his world travels. We sailed back into port just as the sun was setting, it was a beautiful evening, we will definitely do it again!
