Picture perfect day

And it was truly picture perfect. The forecasted cloudy skies did not materialize, so the cooler temperature of late September was offset by sunshine and fair weather clouds. We came prepared to dress in layers, but our windbreakers were enough and we didn't need our sweatshirts that day. There was a nice stiff breeze to catch the sails and some chop to the water.

We came as a small family group, two grown sons and a teenaged granddaughter. I am not sure this experience would be as meaningful or interesting to younger children, especially if they are very active. Really, there is limited seating along the sides and center. Folks are on deck for the entire duration. The crew moves about taking orders for drinks.

Captain Mike Rutstein and his crew were totally experienced and knowledgeable about sailing. Captain Mike has written a couple of excellent books on the subject, one about the original privateer Fame (this schooner is a replica) and the other on the history of Salem privateers in the War of 1812. They are available for sale right on the schooner. I bought both and recommend them to history and nautical buffs.

The best part was the firing of the canon...and that there was no hint of seasickness anywhere on board. Views of Salem and Marblehead were lovely. It was my first sail and I loved every minute...all the sights and sounds of a busy harbor.

Great 2 hours spent on the water

Our group love the detailed story that the captain told about the Fame. Since I am a local and spend a lot of time near the water the best part for me was the story. Our company on the other hand really enjoyed being out on the water as they are from Colorado. The crew was especially friendly and offered us blankets as it was a little chilly.

We spent a long weekend in Salem and this was probably the highlight of the trip. The crew was great, we got to help raise the sails and steer the ship. It was a great time. We took the sunset sail and it was perfect timing. We had a beautiful of all the colors of the sun setting.

We have been on several sunset cruises before and this would rate in the top 1 or 2 of 10 that we have taken over the past 6 years. Perfect weather, sunset and crew to make the entire experience most enjoyable.
