Traverse Tall Ship Company

With Traverse Tall Ship Co. you will make memories to last a lifetime aboard the 114’ schooner Manitou or the classic sailing yacht Scout, as we ply the spectacular waters of Grand Traverse Bay! The company was founded in 1987 with the mission of providing the highest quality customer service, and an affordable way for the average person to experience the thrill of sailing.

Current owners, Capt. Dave and Mary McGinnis, first became involved with the company when Dave was hired to command the newly acquired schooner Manitou back in 1990. They assumed the mantle in 2004 and haven't looked back. Manitou's 2 hour sails (many of them themed), bed & breakfast packages, and multi-day windjammer cruises offer a wide variety of popular choices.

After several years, Dave and Mary felt it was time to offer a more intimate and customized sailing option for those folks who might not want to be in a large group setting. So in June 2013 Sailing Yacht Scout joined the Tall Ship family, to great accolades from all who sailed aboard her! The 38 ft. Scout is ideal for a private group of six or fewer guests.  Because you are reserving the entire boat, we can work with you to design the ideal experience!

Traverse Tall Ship Co. is proud to have received a "Certificate of Excellence" from TripAdvisor.  Our vessels meet the rigorous standards of the US Coast Guard and State of Michigan and our licensed captains and crew act with the highest degree of professionalism.

“Awesome, so much fun. Great crew!!!! Enjoyed the sail immensely!” – Sammie O.

We look forward to sailing with you in Traverse City!

My husband and I went on the overnight bed and breakfast sail. And it was amazing. To see the staff working together to pull the sails up and down and maneuver the large vessel was outstanding. The water was smooth and calm and the sunset was perfect. Staying overnight was awesome! We chose to sleep on deck on our mats and sleeping bags. That was such a unique, memorable experience. We fell asleep watching the moon and stars find their place in the sky. In the morning we enjoyed coffee and homemade muffins on the deck with the other guests. It was very enjoyable. We all made our way to the galley for our homemade breakfast of eggs, sausage, potatoes, homemade jam, bread, and yogurt dish. It was so much fun and a good uniting experience between passengers. There was a lot more alcohol and heavy drinking than we expected and although the rules state no beverages are allowed to be brought on board, that rule was not enforced. A couple men were sipping on their thermos' throughout the night and acted completely inebriated. It put a bit of a damper on the experience, but at least they weren't amongst the people staying overnight. Besides the rules not being enforced on the alcohol consumption, it was an absolute amazing experience. Totally recommend to all. Very thankful for our experience.

Had a lot of fun with the very friendly crew. Our trip was peaceful, but sadly no sunset or full moon visible due to clouds, but at least it wasn't raining! Would definitely go again.

We wanted to take a mini vacation before our grandchildren had to go back to school and as a pre-birthday present for me. The whole experience was fabulous ---the kids got to help put up the sails and steer the boat and were utterly fascinated. The crew were amazing, friendly and helpful, and went above and beyond to accommodate our requests. We loved the cruise itself---just experiencing the water and the wind was so lovely. While we didn't get to skywatch due to clouds and rain, that was our only real disappointment with the experience.

The food was amazing, too. The boxed dinner was more than several of us could finish, and the breakfast was really varied and fantastic. I was particularly taken by the baked French toast.

In summary, a trip well worth it and recommended highly. I would do it again in a heartbeat.

Food was excellent staff seems fake we book the bed and breakfast paid the exes day was hoping that the only people on the tour would be in the bed and breakfast but the actual tour was with normal passengers and bed and breakfast so it seems very crowded for what we paid
