Meeting Location

M-22, just north of downtown Traverse City (Traverse City, MI) (Exact meeting location details will be provided immediately upon purchase of tickets.)
Do I need to book tickets in advance?
While we can sometimes accommodate last minute sign-ups, we highly recommend purchasing your tickets in advance in order to guarantee your space. Book online or over the phone using a Visa, Mastercard or American Express.
The forecast says 30% chance of rain, will it rain on my sail?
This is a common summer forecast in this area. The majority of time we will see little or no precipitation. We watch the weather radar carefully and will cancel in the event of extended periods of heavy rain. However, we will sail in light rain or showers.
What happens if there is bad weather?
If Traverse Tall Ship Co. cancels because of bad weather (thunderstorms, heavy rain for extended periods etc.) you may reschedule your sail or receive a full refund.
What is your cancellation policy?
Once purchased, tickets cannot be refunded. You may reschedule your tickets (subject to availability) only if you do so at least 24 hours in advance.
What should I bring with me?
We strongly recommend sunscreen and a hat. If we are schedule to be out past or near sunset, you may find it more comfortable to bring along a light jacket or sweater.
What should I wear?
Even at the height of summer it’s usually cooler on the water. We recommend having a jacket or sweater with you. If you are planning to go swimming or hiking, bring appropriate clothing so you can be safe and enjoy it! All passengers should wear rubber soft-soled sneakers/tennis shoes or sandals. No high-heels please!
Is there an age limit for these sails?
While there is no age limit for the sails, all attendees under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Are children and infants allowed to attend? Do I need to purchase a ticket for them?
Per USCG regulations all guests must be counted as passengers. Please keep in mind that this includes children and toddlers.
Is your sailboat safe?
Scout meets or exceeds all U. S. Coast Guard and State of Michigan regulations for construction, stability, safety equipment, and electronics for vessels in passenger service. The U. S. Coast Guard licensed captain has many years of experience and you can rest assured of being in good hands.
Will I get seasick?
Because of Scout’s size as a smaller vessel, seasickness is a concern for some passengers. While our sailing grounds in Grand Traverse Bay are well protected from most wind directions which keeps the water relatively calm, please take the necessary precautions before boarding the boat.
Is there a bathroom on the boat?
Yes, the boat is equipped with a bathroom that is accessible at all times. We call them "marine heads" and they are unlike the bathrooms you use at home. Using a marine head involves pumping, and there are simple directions posted in the bathroom on how to use it.
What happens if it starts raining when we're out on our sail?
Don't worry, we won't melt! Trips with a little wetness have proven to be some of the most memorable bonding experiences for our guests. (This all depends on attitude of course...) We have ponchos available for all of our guests in the case we are caught in a rain-shower.
Is the ship handicap accessible?
Unfortunately due to its small size, Scout is not handicap accessible. Please take a look at our sails on Manitou, as the boat is larger and can accommodate manual wheelchairs, which we do have on the premises if you only have a battery powered one.
Are any food or drinks included in the sail?
All cruises on Scout include complimentary soft drinks, snacks, fruit, and Moomer's Ice Cream.
Can I bring my own food and drinks?
You may bring your own food and drinks, but space considerations do not allow large hard plastic coolers to be brought aboard Scout. Remember that all cruises on the Scout include complimentary soft drinks, snacks and fruit. All alcoholic beverages are BYOB.
Is there a place to sit? Is seating assigned?
Seating is on the cabin house tops and on deck boxes. This is backless bench seating. Seating is not assigned, and you are free to move about the vessel, including touring below decks, during the sail.
Is smoking permitted?
No. Smoking in not permitted anywhere on our vessels or property.
Do you have life jackets?
Per U. S. Coast Guard regulations, adult and child life jackets are available. You are not required to wear life jackets, but are welcome to if you like. Younger children may be required to wear a life jacket.
Are pregnant women allowed to attend the sail?
Yes, pregnant women are welcome aboard.
Should I tip the captain and crew?
Tipping is customary, but should be based on your satisfaction with the service you receive. A 15%- 20% gratuity is appropriate if you are happy with the performance of the captain and crew.
Can I stow anything on the boat?
We have space below if you have items you need to stow.
Do you allow strollers onboard?
Strollers may be used on the Tall Ship Manitou as long as the wheels lock. However, there is not space available for strollers on the Sailing Out Scout.
Should we bring hearing protection?
The Blue Angels and other planes will be loud as they perform aerial acrobatics overhead. If you have hearing sensitivity or young children, you may want to have hearing protection for them.
Where do I park?
Parking at our ticket office, located down the road from Scout's dock, to check in. After you check in at our office we will direct you to Scout's dock. Parking is free.
Can I bring my dog or pet?
Pets, other than documented service animals, are not allowed aboard the vessel.
How many people can we take on the Scout?
The vessel and its capacity is regulated by the US Coast Guard. Due to USCG regulations and the boat rating, we can only safely accommodate 6 passengers.
