Silent as a whisper, the electric powered Selkie II glides across the water.  Explore with us the natural wonders of the Elkhorn Slough as we observe rare Southern Sea Otters, Harbor Seals and hundreds of species of birds.

Elkhorn Slough is one of the premier bird watching sites in the western United States. More than 340 species visit or find permanent refuge here, a remarkable number given the slough’s relatively small size. This roster of birds includes several rare and endangered species, such as the Brown Pelican, Black Bellied Plover, and Peregrine Falcon. The tremendous number and variety of birds at the slough attracts thousands of bird watchers from across the country each year.

Captain Brian Ackerman, a life-long waterman has over twenty years of experience operating oceanographic research vessels for the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) and has lived in Moss Landing since 1985. Join him as he guides you through the natural beauty of the Elkhorn Slough.

Selkie II is comfortable and elegant and her electric propulsion allows her to glide across the water in near silence. Wildlife is not startled and you soon feel that you are one with the environment.

So bring a picnic or allow us to cater a special snack as we explore the Monterey Bay's great hidden jewel.

Having previously toured the Slough with a competitor, we sincerely recommend Whisper Charters. The comfort of the boat and deep knowledge of wildlife and history related by Brian Ackerman made for a wonderful experience for all in our mult-generational group.

Both my wife and I enjoyed our tour very much. The electric motored craft was comfortable, very quite and provided great views in all directions. The captain was very affable and very knowledgeable. All in all, an excellent tour.

This is a trip that I had been looking forward to for a few years and finally put it together. Brian welcomed us with his kind character, took care of the basics with us and then showed us the way to the Selkie. It was clean and inviting with beverages if we cared for them. My grandsons, 7 and 4, were totally excited as we boarded and Brian handed them some clickers to count the otters! That kept them interested in keeping their eyes on the environment of the Slough. We brought a few snacks of our own which was fun to munch on during the trip.

Brian has a background of being on the water since he was 5. He was open to answer all of our questions and there was many, both more personal and technical about the life of the slough. He was the best ever and very good with the boys. Being an inlander for most of my life until 4 years ago, my knowledge of the ocean, sloughs rivers coming into the ocean is limited and expanding with adventures of this sort. I learned so much more about otters!! We had a fantastic time exploring with Brian and the Selkie. If anyone out there is wondering about it, do take the time to make the trip. Thanks Brian for a wonderful time!

I planned this trip as a surprise for my husband for Father's Day. He is an avid birder, so I knew he would enjoy it. I get motion sickness very easily, but all that I read about this tour made me confident I could manage it. I did take a dramamine, but I think I would have even been fine without (which is shocking). We brought along our 2 year old, and he really enjoyed it. He napped a bit, used his own pair of binoculars, and enjoyed all the otters, seals, sea lions, and birds. I love that the boat ride is dog-friendly. We weren't sure if we were going to have someone available to watch our pup at home for the weekend, so being able to plan to bring him along was really nice. He ended up staying home, but he would have loved it, too! This is a great tour for avid birders and those just interested in getting a closer look at wildlife. None of the animals cared at all when the boat came near, so we got very close looks at everything. Brian was extremely knowledgeable without being dull. He didn't talk nonstop but he gave us a wonderful education of the Elkhorn Slough's history and wildlife. My avid birder husband learned some new things and spotted new birds for his life list, and I thoroughly enjoyed myself just watching the animals. I'm not much into birds, but I really enjoyed getting such close looks at the otters, sea lions, and seals! I highly recommend this tour if you are remotely into nature and you are close to the area.
