Wok Wiz Tours has been in business for nearly 30 years and was founded by the late chef/author Shirley Fong-Torres who designed her tours to showcase one of the most remarkable neighborhoods in San Francisco: Chinatown. Each year, we bring thousands of guests, of all ages, from near and far, to our vibrant area. Every Wok Wiz tour leader was either born in, or grew up in Chinatown, giving a very local flavor to the tour, and each speaks fluent English as well as Chinese.

Wok Wiz Chinatown Tours remains a San Francisco icon.  Featured in the NY Times, LA Times, Bon Appetit, Gourmet, and Cooking Light, and multiple guide books such as Fodor’s and Frommer’s, the tours are touted as "top attractions" in the city.

Former English as a Second Language teacher, Shirley worked for Levi Strauss & Co., but she found her true path in life in 1984: "To teach and entertain people while sharing my love for Chinese history and food."  The author of four books and numerous food and travel articles, Shirley also guest starred on the Food Network, Discovery, Fine Living-TV, and PBS shows, as well as the Rachael Ray talk show during her life. Her legacy continues to inspire the Wok Wiz team today who, led by Shirley’s daughter Tina and the same food-loving chefs and guides, keep Wok Wiz true to its original mission: "For our new friends to leave us with a greater understanding of the Chinese immigrants and their contributions to American life, and with good food and memories."

This is a long tour. Our guide was Dorothy who was great.

She seemed to know everything about Chinatown. Lunch was good but not exciting.

The gentleman who toured our group of 7 (four of us together, another couple and an International tourist alone) was very pleasant and kind. He had lived in Chinatown most of his life and knew lots of interesting facts. He was a bit faint of voice which was difficult for the noisy environment. There was not much walking, for a walking tour, but instead a lot of standing and listening. There was a degree of "I'll take you to my friends' stores" component but not too heavy handed. The dim sum at the end was fairly Americanized, less traditional than other dim sum meals we have had elsewhere. I am certain more traditional dim sum is available nearby but experience may have taught the tour company that many guests preferred the version we got. In sum, I'd say there are probably better tour offerings available. The tour lasted all morning (10am - 1pm) which we felt too long but some people might it.

Our tour guide, Herman, was wonderful. Excellent knowledge and illustrative pictures to show both the past and the present. Great way to spend the morning.

The lady was very nice and gracious, however the tour lacked the depth we were looking for.
