Wok Wiz Tours has been in business for nearly 30 years and was founded by the late chef/author Shirley Fong-Torres who designed her tours to showcase one of the most remarkable neighborhoods in San Francisco: Chinatown. Each year, we bring thousands of guests, of all ages, from near and far, to our vibrant area. Every Wok Wiz tour leader was either born in, or grew up in Chinatown, giving a very local flavor to the tour, and each speaks fluent English as well as Chinese.

Wok Wiz Chinatown Tours remains a San Francisco icon.  Featured in the NY Times, LA Times, Bon Appetit, Gourmet, and Cooking Light, and multiple guide books such as Fodor’s and Frommer’s, the tours are touted as "top attractions" in the city.

Former English as a Second Language teacher, Shirley worked for Levi Strauss & Co., but she found her true path in life in 1984: "To teach and entertain people while sharing my love for Chinese history and food."  The author of four books and numerous food and travel articles, Shirley also guest starred on the Food Network, Discovery, Fine Living-TV, and PBS shows, as well as the Rachael Ray talk show during her life. Her legacy continues to inspire the Wok Wiz team today who, led by Shirley’s daughter Tina and the same food-loving chefs and guides, keep Wok Wiz true to its original mission: "For our new friends to leave us with a greater understanding of the Chinese immigrants and their contributions to American life, and with good food and memories."

Great experience with Wok Wiz tours. Dorothy, our guide, was as cute as she could be. And very knowledgeable on historical facts, tips for shopping, and other points of interest in Chinatown and the greater SF area. And the dim sum lunch is not to be missed. Definitely recommend!

I contacted Wok Wiz for a foodie tour reviewed on the internet. It was not available at the date/time requested. I was encouraged to sign up for a tour on another day. I was NOT informed in the email -- that what they were suggesting was a totally different type tour -- not JUST a change in date and time. A tour with a nice gentleman who just talked/guided us through Chinatown- not much historical perspective, just a walking guide. We had a lovely lunch at the end of the tour -- the food was good, not great. But definitely not a foodie tour and not the tour of little Italy and Chinatown as requested. After returning from my trip, I went back to my registration and found a description which was consistent with my tour, so had I read the fine print, I would not have been surprised. I have taken small group guided historical and foodie tours in NYC, Rome, Venice, London, Charleston, etc... this was the weakest of all tours. Not a bad experience, just not what we expected.... So beware of their over zealous efforts to book you on another day if your first choice is not available. Make sure you understand what you are paying for....

Wok Wiz Chinatown Tours responded:
Thank you for your feedback. I'm sorry for the misunderstanding. You had been waitlisted and later booked into the "Wok Wiz Daily Tour". I believe your intention was to sign up for the "I Can't Believe I Ate My Way Through Chinatown" tour, which is a specialty experience and offered on select dates.

I encourage you to reach out as you plan your next trip to San Francisco, we usually can put a section of "I Can't Believe..." on the books by advanced request, pending guide availability.

Dorothy was fantastic! She is an excellent tour guide. We learned a lot of history and interesting facts about Chinatown and early San Francisco. Dorothy introduced us to the owners of some mom and pop type stores in the neighborhood which we may not have found on our own. Lunch was delicious (and way more substantial than I expected). After the tour, we had a much better appreciation for Chinatown than we would have had without Dorothy's expertise. We would recommend this tour to anyone who wants to go beyond tourist souvenir shopping.

We took the tour of Chinatown with Gimmy as our guide. Her knowledge and friendly demeanor allowed us to gain an insight into Chinatown we never would have realized. We recommend this tour to ANYONE.
